admittedly, i looked at the box score right after the game ended and saw the shooting percentage, which actually went down to 44 percent when last i looked. so, yeah, i had a hissy fit. ah well.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Tim Duncan dominated the middle and San Antonio's stingy second-half defense turned a close game into a rout Tuesday night, leading the Spurs to a 116-89 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Duncan had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and backup guard Jacque Vaughn scored 16 points off the Danny Granger led the Pacers with 16 points, not nearly enough to halt Indiana's season-high seven game losing streak.

As usual, it was the defending NBA champion's reliable defense that turned the game.

Indiana shot a blistering 78.9 percent from the field in the first quarter and 67.6 percent in the half, but all the Pacers could muster was a 59-59 halftime tie.

And when the Pacers went cold, the Spurs took advantage.

Indiana opened the third quarter shooting 1-of-11, a lapse that allowed San Antonio to open the quarter on an 8-0 run. By the time it ended, the Spurs had outscored Indiana 18-2, building an insurmountable 77-61 lead with 4:18 to go.

That was all San Antonio needed.

The Pacers never got closer than 11 the rest of the way, finishing the third quarter with nine points to match a season-low set Jan. 2, against Memphis. Indiana scored just 30 second-half points, barely avoiding their season low of 28 also set against Memphis on Jan. 2.

Newly-signed guard Damon Stoudamire started in his San Antonio debut, playing 22 minutes and finishing with 11 points.

Exactly. I had to explain that, and the fact that our defensive system ALLOWS long 2s, 5 times in the game thread. Some people either: don't watch the game very closely; have no memory; don't understand the Spurs' defensive scheme; or, don't understand basketball very well.

They were 8-9 at one point, and 7 of those were 18+fters. The major defensive mistakes in the first half were continually leaving Murphy open beyond the 3pt line.

tdmvp - it's the very same point we argued over a few weeks ago - you can't just say the Spurs are playing terrible D when the other team shoots well. Sure, sometimes they are, but most times the other team is hot on their long 2s which will even out during the game.

The Spurs' defensive scheme is entirely premised on forcing the other team to shoot lots of long 2s (by cutting off layups and 3s), in the knowledge that no team in the league can do it consistently enough to win regularly, which is an NBA axiom.

Plus a nice hustle play to get an extra possession out of what would've easily been an Indiana rebound.

I think the most important statistic Damon put up was 0 turnovers. No miscues on your first night as the Spurs PG, let along starting PG, with 48 hours to learn one of the most complicated systems in the NBA?
