View Full Version : Malone Yankin' Us Around...

You know, for a while I was thinking that Malone would make a good addition to the team, add some physical presence for the playoffs, etc. And after reading some of the back and forths on this board, I could see the cases made on either side.
But I've been doing some thinking about it, and here's the thing. This guy has been sitting on his butt for the first half of the season, stringing teams along while he decides when, where, or if he wants to come back and play. He figures, he's paid his dues, he just wants to come back to a team that has the best shot at winning it all. Yeah, he'll break a sweat if he HAS to, but he'd rather just play minimal minutes, and go along for the ride.
You know, Brent Barry couldn't pick up a pen and sign a contract fast enough to come to S.A., even though he had a chance to play near his hometown in Golden State. And Jerome Kersey, Kevin Willis, and Steve Kerr all had to deal with the ups and downs of being on the bench (and in Kerr's case, even briefly exiled to Portland) for entire seasons. Hell, Sean Elliott busted his butt for a ring in a season people claimed didn't even count as a real season, and he knew his kidneys were failing.
Point being, Malone is not worthy of the grand tradition of those who have toiled for the Spurs over the years in the quest for the championship. When we hoist another O'Brien Trophy in June and hold that parade on the Riverwalk, I for one hope Karl Malone is sitting on his tractor in Arkansas, with ringless fingers.
Just one former #1 Draft Pick's Opinion.

right now, as it stands, it looks like our spurs could beat any of miami, detroit or minny in a 7 game series.
add malone to one of those teams and that changes. add him to our team and it's called insurance.
i hate malone, but i've come around to pop's logic....if you can get him, then do it....if nothing else to keep him away from other squads....rasho and malik will adjust as needed.

Right now I feel like if he comes here it would be like finding a $20 bill. No harm, just a plus. Ok, maybe a $5 bill that's been through the laundry.

It's still addition by subtraction. I don't want to see Malone on another contender. Shaq. Malone, and Wade woud be da bomb in the EC...

I'd be really surprised if Malone signed with the Spurs. I think if he had the intention to do it he would have already done so... or at the very least, made his intentions known. JMHO.

Regardless of what decision Malone makes...he is likely still trying to get as close to 100% healthy as possible, with his knee.

Malone is pure drama as my man timvp has pointed out all year. I understand Pop wanting his experience and what he could do for Timmy but I can't stand the S.O.B. I'd love to see them just say fu** it and move on but it looks like Pop is willing to hold out hope. In my opinion he could add some things if healthy? With that being said I would hate to see him in the silver and black.

I think Malone is addition by substraction... while his role on the Spurs may not be decisive, the fact he would not be playing for Miami or Minny against us is more important IMHO. I also think he would behave once he realizes that his chances to get a ring would be quite high (+ he could go hunting in San Antonio http://spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smilol.gif)
I guess the best of both worlds would be if he decides to retire all together. Timvp would be fascinated that the Evil retires ringless, and no other opponents would get him.

Aw, c'mon. Malone is not the 'difference maker' on any of those squads, any more so than he would be on the Spurs. And given the Spurs current bench depth, I'm not sure he adds anything. How does taking minutes from Horry or Rose help? Can he run the floor with Beno and the Jets? The ability of the Spurs to beat any of those squads in the playoffs depends---as it always does---on timely shooting and good defense. And health. The only way Malone factors in is if he clocks Tim Duncan and knocks him out of the series.

You know I was one of the fans that didn't mind Malone coming over but now I've changed my mind.
Forget him.
He's not signing here. He says he doesn't ride any 'coattails'...what do you think he'd be doing if he signs here?

as said, hopefully we all win and he retires and fades away into oblivion.....we don't need him hunting our little mexican girls anyway.....

More like half of a one dollar bill that someone wiped their ass with. Take a ride, Karl, if you've lost all pride.

Once a Malone supporter, I now see him as a gathering distraction. Get lost, Karl!

The only people it is distracting are us.
We certainly are doing fine without him, but wait until the next loss and get back to us.

So what, he WAS, not right now though.
Besides, the Spurs are absolutely fine without him.
Why change things if it isn't necessary, I wouldn't mind him, but how long will he be in SA anyway?

Malone is not really yankin' anyone around because he's always said that he wasn't deciding until the new year whether/where he was going to play.
That being said, I don't think the Spurs need him.
Not only that Kori but he was injured and recovering from that injury.
Having said that I don't think the Spurs need him either, it was never about need but I do think the Spurs should sign him if they have the chance. I don't think I've ever heard of a team that was too deep.....
I mean what happens if Malik Rose gets hurt and we don't have a guy that can fill in for him because we figured we didn't NEED him even though we could have signed him for a veterans minimum?
And we aren't THAT deep at that position anyhow, I mean you'd have to be crazy to say that Horry or Mass are better players than Malone.
Hell Rose isn't a better player but given enough minutes, and the fact that Karl is over forty maybe Rose could put up similar numbers.

Not I. In order, I would rather:
a) Win without him.
b) Lose without him.
c) Have him retire
d) Win with him.

Didnt Beno win Rookie of the month or week or something? He is playing very well. Barry played point guard some in Sea, didnt he? Manu can also play some point. Im not worried about our guard depth. Our depth is not that great up front though. I dont like Malone very much, but I wouldnt mind seein him in SA. Do we need him? No. Would he help us? Yes.
If we sign him great, he'll help alot in the playoffs. If we dont sign him, we'll still be fine.

An aged Malone with time away from the game is still better then TMass, IMO.

you know what would be really nice? if Malone signs for another team and y'all get another playoff let down, I hope you all relize that last year you would of won it all, but Karl the "Mailman" Malone got in your way, if LA wouldn't of had Malone you guys would of beat them, and went on to beat Detroit. The Mailman is still not only an excellent player but a huge precence in the lane. I do guess I side with a lot of you though, I hope that he doesn't go to the Spurs, y'all don't deseve him. oh yeah and about him being to old, TMass and Horry play like there a lot older than Malone those 2 are way out of there prime

Is that a record for most "y'alls" in one post?
I am fine with not winning last year. SA can't win every year, and it certainly wasn't our post play that cost us. What you have to understand is that Karl Malone goes out there to hurt people, not to play hardnosed ball. He has hospitalized at least three players throughout to course of his career: Isaiah Thomas with a viscious elbow to the head that took 40+ stitches internal and external to close, David Robinson with a concussion, and Donyell Marshal with broken ribs. WE DON'T NEED THAT SHIT.

I totally agree with Exstatic. The guy is an old fuck, we don't need him. I hated him when he was with the Jazz and MJ kicked his butt every year, I hated him with the Lakers (though I enjoyed Detroit taking away his precious ring) and I would definetely hate to see him wearing the silver & black.
Utah guy, get over it, he's old, he never gave you guys a ring, and he let you down to persue his beloved ring with the Fakers, which by the way couldn't get.
I would hate to help that clown get a ring.
