All-Stars Billups, Duncan and Stoudemire Highlight Star-Studded Haier Shooting Stars Field

Posted Feb 7 2008 4:39PM

New York, Feb. 7, 2008 – Team Detroit will defend its Haier Shooting Stars title against Team Chicago, Team Phoenix and Team San Antonio in this year’s competition, which will be held on NBA All-Star Saturday Night, Feb. 16, at New Orleans Arena.
The Detroit team, which captured the title last year in Las Vegas with a time of 50.5 seconds, consists of All-Star and 2004 Finals MVP Chauncey Billups, Shock forward and two-time WNBA All-Star Swin Cash, and Shock head coach and four-time NBA All-Star Bill Laimbeer. Cash and Laimbeer were key figures in the Shock capturing the 2003 and 2006 WNBA championships.

Team Chicago, last year’s runner-up, is comprised of Bulls guard and Slidell, La. native Chris Duhon, two-time WNBA All-Star and Sky forward Candice Dupree and three-time NBA champion B.J. Armstrong. Representing Phoenix, the 2005 winner, are All-Star Amaré Stoudemire, two-time WNBA All-Star and 2007 WNBA Finals MVP Cappie Pondexter and Suns great Eddie Johnson. Team San Antonio, which dominated the competition in the 2006 Shooting Stars challenge with a record-setting time of 25.1 seconds, consists of 10-time All-Star and three-time Finals MVP Tim Duncan, four-time WNBA All-Star and Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon and David Robinson, a two-time NBA champion and One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Team Los Angeles won the inaugural competition in 2004.

As with all of this year's All-Star participants, members of the Haier Shooting Stars teams will join over 2,500 members of the NBA Family for the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service on Friday, Feb. 15. The volunteers will participate in a variety of service projects at 10 different sites throughout New Orleans.

The Haier Shooting Stars contest features one current NBA player, one current WNBA player and one NBA legend on each team. There are six numbered shooting locations of increasing difficulty, with each team attempting to make all shots in numeric order in the fastest time. Each team will select a specific player rotation to follow throughout the competition. Each shot must be made before the next player begins shooting in succession. Teams have up to two minutes to complete the entire shooting course and the team that completes all six shots in the least amount of time is declared the winner. In the case of a tie, a shoot-off will be used to determine the winner.

The Haier Shooting Stars will be televised live nationally as part of NBA All-Star Saturday Night which will also feature the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, Sprite Slam Dunk and PlayStation® Skills Challenge. TNT and ESPN Radio’s national coverage will begin at 8 p.m. EST from the New Orleans Arena. The NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 17, will air live on TNT, ESPN Radio and in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Previous winning teams from the Haier Shooting Stars competition:

2004: Magic Johnson (L.A. Lakers legend), Derek Fisher (L.A. Lakers), Lisa Leslie (L.A. Sparks)
2005: Dan Majerle (Phoenix Suns legend), Shawn Marion (Phoenix Suns), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury)
2006: Steve Kerr (San Antonio Spurs legend), Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs), Kendra Wecker (San Antonio Silver Stars)
2007: Bill Laimbeer (Detroit Pistons legend), Chauncey Billups (Detroit Pistons), Swin Cash (Detroit Shock)

Awesome, love D-Rob, also Timmy gets to hang out with him during the break, so that makes up for Tony and Manu not being there with him this year.

Shes the only one of three that could hit a 20 footer consistently.

Hell Becky being there is enough to make it all worthwhile.

Drob suiting back up in silver and black will be nostalgic no question.

It will be great to see Robinson back with a Spurs jersey even if it is for shooting 3's.

I guess we will have some "David is in great shape, Spurs should sign him" thread. :)

NBA details on day of community service in New Orleans
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Before they take to the basketball court in New Orleans, Boston's Kevin Garnett and San Antonio's Tim Duncan will help unveil a new one.

The court refurbishment and dedication at the Mahalia Jackson School in Central City is part of the NBA "All-Star Day of Service" next Friday, February 15th.

The All-Star game at New Orleans Arena is February 17th.

Players will take part in ten projects throughout the city, ranging from the rebuilding of homes to the construction of playgrounds.

Recovery continues from 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

This season, every visiting team will take part in a community service activity.

Hi...I mostly lurk around here but let me say...you guys are HILARIOUS!!! Always a pleasure to visit and I always learn a lot from y'all!

I was SHOCKED and thrilled to see Becky added to this. She's in Russia right now playing for CSKA. I wonder what the Spurs had to do to pull this off because CSKA has a game that same weekend and that Russian coach is pretty tough no nonsense kind of guy.
Let's just hope they get her in with enough time to recover from the flight because she's the only chance we have...LOL!

why is Becky's off-season being spent playing for CKSA?

WNBA players only make about 40,00 - 94,000 per year. She is a max contract player at 94,00 and can't make more then that. This past season with bonuses and stuff she made a little over 100,000.
The new CBA will give her a raise to 97,000 but that won't happen until next season when she's a UFA. If we have to core her the raise is automatic...either way for her it's automatic...LOL!
So what happens is the top WNBA players head off to Europe to play in the WNBA off season. She signed a two year deal with CSKA...the top Russian team. She's probaly making double what she makes here and doesn't have to carry the load. She's a natural SG so she's splitting time at the 1 & 2 averaging about 18-24 minutes a game. Her team is undeated and kicking ass all over both the Russian and Euro leauge. It also keep the players in top condition then add in that she's a gym rat and all she wants to do is play ball and that's why she's in Russsia. It's been good for her game but that means she will miss all of camp and most if not all of the preseaosn while CSKA is in the playoffs. It's been good for her game...she looks to be in even better shape then she was last season.

These pics are from her last Euro league game last week.

I'm so sorry Becky and WNBA friends can't get by with $100K/year and have to moonlight in Europe.

I think it has less to do with getting by on 100k per year (not many make that much) and more to do with when they retire in their mid 30's and making sure they have enough money to sustain them until they find work again.

TP made a record the last time. That shot he made from mid-court in just 1 try(?), was almost impossible but so amazing.

I wonder how many shots does Becky has to take to make it from mid-court?

CSKA Moscow was in the past the team of the red army.

It's kinda ironical that an American sportswoman is now going in the former USSR and played for the former red army team just to make tons of money.

I wonder what Lenin thinks of that in his Mausoleum. :)
