Firstly, abso-fucking-lutely to jaffies' "March of the Pigs" mention.

Secondly, I'm going to have to weigh in with a third Al Green choice:
hsU6_eSG4k4

While I'd always liked Tribe, this is the song that transformed them into one of my all time favorite groups:

You know I was thinking...pretty much every artist I like, at one point made at least one song that made me a fan them.

It's actually pretty amazing when you think about it.

Prince -- When doves cry

:tu Not the hugest Prince fan, but he's an amazing songwriter. I appreciate him more in an era that has had its songwriting dragged through the mud and shot in the back of the head by the filth that wrote for Britney and Friends for the past decade.

Goo Goo Dolls - "Name", from the before-Johnny-Cut-His-Hair-Era. "Iris" is their crown jewel, though.

Of course. Everyone has that moment they hear a song on the radio and ask their friends, "Hey, who is this?" And when you find out, you go buy the CD. Well, at least that's what I did until I became the poor sonofabitch I am now.

I guess in the modern era, you'll be riding in your friend's daddy's Beamer, listening to what's on his iPod playing through the stereo and hearing a song you're the last person on the face of the earth to hear, repeat the aforementioned scenario whilst replacing buying the CD with downloading it on LimeWire.

"Subdivisions" was the first Rush song I liked. In fact, I had heard other Rush songs like "New World Man" and "Freewill" and never liked them all that much. But when I heard "Subdivisions" I loved it, so I borrowed Chronicles from a friend and copied it to a cassette tape, and once I heard the 2112 Overture I was hooked for life.

Another song I remember impacting me at an early age was "Black Sabbath." I had already heard "Iron Man" and "Paranoid" and liked them okay, so I pulled out my dad's Black Sabbath Greatest Hits record to listen to some of their other stuff and "Black Sabbath" really blew my sheltered mind. I ended up buying every Black Sabbath album from the Ozzy and Dio eras over the next few weeks.

Recently I've been listening to a lot of Grateful Dead... a band I've avoided for a long time because of people that I've known who like them. A buddy of mine finally convinced me to listen to the American Beauty album and I was a fan half way through "Box of Rain."
