Is there any particular FA that catches your eye? If so, please explain.

My favorite of the listed would be Antawn Jamison. However, I think that's unlikely, as the Wizards will more than likely let Arenas go.

Anthony Johnson and Desegana Diop right off the top.

Terevor Ariza as well, but hes an LA boy and they love him, so thats DEFINATELY not getting broken up.

Other than that, its alot of hoping and wishing, and alot of luck.

No thanks. Make a trade and get something gauranteed.

Jamison strikes me as a character guy.

I could be wrong, but I'm wondering if he's at the point in his career where competing for a championship is the most significant issue. I believe we could only offer him the MLE. How old is Jamison BTW? I would really like him on our squad, but it's obviously very unlikely. Then again, so is Shaq in a Suns uniform.

T Park
02-14-2008, 06:31 PM
Antwan more than likely gets resigned in Washington.

Is he yearning to win? I dunno, don't know anything about him, seems like a good guy, but so are alot of guys that turn the Spurs down for more money.

Mr. Body
02-14-2008, 06:35 PM
Jameson is a character guy - good reports on him. But it'd be easy to convince himself they're building something good in the East, where it's obviously much easier to compete (look at the West standings recently?), especially if they let Arenas go. And he'll make more than MLE to boot, plus have a greater role than as a Spur, which he deserves.

T Park
02-14-2008, 06:37 PM
If he became a Spur, I think he would have a bigger role than what you think Body. First hed be the starting shooting guard. He would be a small ball 4, hed be in the game when manu and duncan are on the bench and shoulder some of the interior scoring as well.

batboy

Hell we should take Bonzi to keep him from signing with a contender.

And no way Brand's contract lapses. He's going to be extended or traded.

LoL Jamario Moon cant shoot a jumper to save his life. Last time the Rockets met up with the Raptors he is so worthless that we put Yao Ming on him and he still cant shoot even though Yao gave him 6' of space.

Just because he can dunk and gets himself on SportsCenter doesnt mean he is good. There is a reason he went undrafted.

Jamison as starting SG?!? I might believe SF. More likely though, PF. Seriously. Jamison can't guard an SG. I can see moving Bowen to starting SG and maybe Jamison as SF, a big line up like the Lakers plan Bynum, Gasol, Odom ... More likely though

C - Duncan
PF - Jamison
SF - Bowen
SG - Barry (re-signed) or Udoka or FA or Draft Pick
PG - Parker

Of course, all this is blatant speculation assuming we get Jamison...

No he didnt miss jumpers he missed WIDE OPEN jumpers with Yao Ming camping in the paint daring him to shoot it.
I am glad u aint the coach for the Spurs cuz the last thing u need to worry about is Moon's jumper when ur team is playing the Raptors.

remingtonbo2001
02-14-2008, 07:30 PM
Evans wouldn't be a bad pickup either.

With Jamison, we could go with him starting at PF, or at SF and have Splitter come in and start at the center position. I'm not sure if the FO is willing to take that risk. It depends how this year's championship run goes.

Do you think the Pacers would be willing to terminate O'Neal's contract, if they don't trade him? Obviously, this would be at his request.

Honestly, I think grabbing O'Neal might be more realistic than Jamison.
I believe he has previously expressed intrest in playing for the Spurs and his desire to compete for a championship.

It's just way too soon to have a good idea on who should be Spurs FA targets.

Let's wait at least one week and the trade deadline to see if Spurs make or not a move.
And after the playoffs, Spurs needs will even be more known.

The Spurs will have 5 roster spots (they must carry 13, per CBA) to fill next year with the MLE, the LLE, vet mins, one $2+M trade exception (if they can find someone who both fits the salary and the team concept), and rookie contracts. Adjust your expectations accordingly. We won't be signing any "name" players, nor likely anyone to anything guaranteed beyond 2010 when everyone but Tim and Tony come off the books.

Jamison is 34 so getting him won't answer the Spurs' future needs. But he can definitely help especially with his 3 point shooting in unclogging the lane. He's also a decent post player and rebounder. Would be perfect at PF alongside Duncan.

However, since Splitter and Mahinmi are projected to join the team next year, Jamison would become redundant. Spurs could trade for the pieces they need.

Okay, I look at it as who needs replacing, then by whom:

Elson - Splitter
Horry - Mahinmi/Bonner (although Pop has soured on Bonner and he could be moved - if Bonner goes, replace him with either Hermann, Ryan Bowen or Bonzi Wells, although the latter would be risky)
Finley - Mo Evans on a small contract - good offensive player with mid-range game, could learn to defend in our system.
Barry - James Jones - throw a big part of the MLE at him. He can shoot, he's long, and he's young.
Vaughn/Stoudamire - Anthony Johnson, or keep Vaughn (he's not nearly as bad as casual fans think, especially when confined to the 10-15min backup role), draft youngster to learn.

I would think 80% of the American population "have the balls to work there ass off an not quit once something doesn't go there way."
Having a work ethic is nothing special in this country, esp. when the person is only in his 30s. He is a basketball player but that does not give him the right to slack off during working hours.
I do agree he produces nice highlight reels though

I don't know about the Raps cap, but I reckon they'd match Moon for the MLE. Also, Jones is much younger, and not as raw. Either way I wouldn't complain.

Your math is off. Vaughn has a team option for next season.

Guaranteed contracts

Mahinmi
Bonner
Duncan
Oberto
Manu
Bowen
Udoka
Vaughn
Parker

Almost guaranteed to bring in Rookies
Splitter

10 Players total. Need to fill 3 spots minimum, 5 spots maximum.

We have 3 picks, estimated at 27, 57, and 47( toronto pick)...

We need a 2nd/3ed pg. I would suggest either Cassel or Mighty mouse for the Vet Min. For 10 year+ vets in 08/09 that would be $1,262,275. The LLE or Biannual exception will be worth $1.91 million in 08/09. Using the LLE to secure Cassel would also be acceptable in my opinion

I would also try and bring Barry back for the Vet Min.

That would mean
Mahinmi, Bonner, Duncan, Oberto, Splitter
Manu, Bowen, Udoka, Barry
Vaughn, Parker, Cassel

I would want 1 more NBA experienced big (Diop for the MLE)

Hopefully, We would be able to draft at least 1 wing who would stick with 3 picks...

See, the situation is nowhere near as bad as you make out. Plus, if we get either Cassel or Stoudamire for the vet min, we will have the LLE to get a veteran wing. If not, we would have to go for the vet min. I think that might get us say Dahntay Jones (SAC) or Quinton Ross (LAC).

Last offseason, my two realistic targets were James Posey and Ime Udoka. I've watch Posey play a lot this year and he can beat a defensive beat. On the Spurs, he could have been really good. That said, I'm happy enough with Ime Udoka. He has shown some signs of being a long-term fit in San Antonio. We'll see how he plays down the stretch and into the playoffs before we know for sure whether he's going to stick.

I do agree with those who said the best option overall is to trade right now. This free agent class is pretty weak and it's also shallow. There just aren't that many quality options out there. Honestly, there aren't even many halfway decent options.

If the Spurs want an athletic wing to add to their collection of aging wings, I like Dorell Wring, JR Smith and Gerald Green ... in that order. Dorell Wright would be a perfect fit for what the Spurs need. He's tall, long and can rebound and even block shots. The Spurs liked him a lot when he was in the draft (he went straight from HS to NBA) but the Heat got him before the Spurs. His major knock is his jumper but he was regarded as a good shooter in high school so he likely could flourish in the right situation. Plus at 22, he's still young enough to improve.

JR Smith and Gerald Green are both similar because they are both head cases who could come for a cheap price due to their head case ways. If either had a clue about being a professional or working hard, they'd be stars. The Spurs may look at one of those guys as a low risk/high reward type signing.

As far as bigs, the two that jump out at me are Nenad Krstic and Eduardo Najera. Krstic is another player who the Spurs wanted that they missed out on. He has been horrible this year after tearing his ACL last year but he's still young and has already shown great promise. He's restricted and the Nets want to keep him so he'll be tough to snag away.

Eduardo Najera would be your typical Spurs signing. Aging veteran who brings toughness and hunger. If Horry retires, the Spurs will be low on power forwards as Splitter and Mahinmi are more center than power forwards right now. Najera for a reasonable contract would be a good veteran bigman presence that would allow the younger bigs time to grow.

As Bruno said, it's tough to really narrow it down until at least after the trade deadline. Things could change in a heartbeat at some point between now and the start of the signing period.

Whoever they bring in, I want the player paid the minimum unless Parker's health comes into question. MLE and even LLE type money should be spent elsewhere.

Alright, a few more questions. Given a PG at the Vet Min or Rookie contract. We will also need at least 1 more big. Given we will have 2 near rookies (Splitter, Mahinmi) I assume we will be looking for a veteran. A) How much are you willing to spend - up to the full MLE? B) Which targets and how much. Eg. Diop (DAL , currently) for the full MLE, then Turiaf(LAL) for 2.5 Million, Brandon Bass (DAL) 2.5 Million, then Justin Williams (SAC) LLE...

Also, is are there any players you make a run at just to spoke the wheels of our rivals. Eg. Ariza (LAL), Turiaf (LAL), JR Smith (DEN), Hermann (DET), Posey (BOS), Diop (DAL,currently), Bass (DAL, Currently), James Jones (POR)

espn has led some of yall astray. moon wont be available this summer. he has a second year on his current deal that is partially unguaranteed. so its essentially a team option (raptors can choose to either keep him on at his salary, which is about 770k , or waive him and only pay a small portion/nothing). shamsports, patricia bender, storytellers, and even hoopshype back this up.

as for this summer, my targets have been, and continue to be carlos delfino, james jones, and kelenna azubuike. delfino has his issues; hes restricted, a streaky shooter, and a bit of a chucker. jones is having his best year during a contract year, which should always raise some flags. and buike cant get solid PT on the warriors, so its hard to judge him.

Is there any particular FA that catches your eye? If so, please explain.

My favorite of the listed would be Antawn Jamison. However, I think that's unlikely, as the Wizards will more than likely let Arenas go.

:reading Antawn Jamison & Elton Brand will be awesome pick ups :reading .

I would absolutely love Hermann, however he's restricted. I think Detriot would be wise to keep him, although I don't know the situation there. Posey would be great, but depending on his ability to fit into Boston's system, I'm not sure the Spurs will be given the opportunitity to purpose an offer.

I would LOVE Turiaf. I think he would be my favorite player out of any Laker at the moment. He's physical and plays with heart. Something which LA should cherish dearly. I don't expect him to be let go of.

That being said, what is the deal with Jermain O'Neal? Are we talking slim chance, long-shot, 50/50? I know at one time he did have interest in coming to SA. Although, I would think Indy would trade him before granting an ETO. He has been Injury prone, so I'd say it would be a moderate risk. We have Mahinmi and Splitter coming in, so O'Neal could almost be viewed as a luxary.

Is this Finley's last year. I would think the more likely senerio would involve Brent retiring and Finley coming on for another season for the vet minimum.

So your saying the guy doesn't work hard?
WTF did u just read?
himat said he worked his ass off but i said i dont think working hard is anything special because most of us americans work hard everyday earning way less than the average ballers

Antawn Jamison would be a great addition.

Whoever is saying Brand and Jamison - we have the MLE, LLE and vet min to work with, so where exactly is the money coming from?

Did I see Beno! :stirpot:

Hermann for sure! Spurs need to go after him hard, he's a nice Horry replacement that Bonner isn't.

Eg. Diop (DAL , currently) for the full MLE, then Turiaf(LAL) for 2.5 Million, Brandon Bass (DAL) 2.5 Million, then Justin Williams (SAC) LLE...It's tough to put a price tag on these players at this point. For a veteran big like Najera, if he were to come for around half the MLE ... that sounds like a good buy. Kurt Thomas would be someone else to look at for around the same price. I like Turiaf but being restricted, he'd be impossible to steal. Same with Bass, although I like Turiaf better. Justin Williams would be an LLE option as long as the Spurs are satisfied by his off court issues.

A couple other cheap bigs could be Chris Mihm, Michael Doleac and Jamaal Magloire. Now that I think about it, I'd probably save the big money for trying to go after an athletic wing. One of Najera, Thomas, Mihm, Doleac or Magloire would be nice as veteran insurance and shouldn't cost too much.

Also, is are there any players you make a run at just to spoke the wheels of our rivals. Eg. Ariza (LAL), Turiaf (LAL), JR Smith (DEN), Hermann (DET), Posey (BOS), Diop (DAL,currently), Bass (DAL, Currently), James Jones (POR)Eh, not really. The only one who might make sense to go after for an odd reason is Diop ... with the reasoning that he's shown to guard Duncan well and getting him off Dallas might be worth it. And really, one of the main reasons why the Spurs signed Horry originally was because he defended Duncan well.

Of the players in your list, I think Ariza, Turiaf, Bass and Diop will likely cost too much. JR Smith, Herrmann and Posey might be targets for the right price. I'm not too high on James Jones for the Spurs because he's a wing who plays with a low amount of energy and that usually doesn't mesh well with Pop.

DeSagana Diop
James Jones and/or Trevor Ariza

I'm afraid Jamison would be too expensive

I think the most doable among them are Kurt Thomas/Raef Lafrentz and James posey

Kurt thomas could provide good defense inside. His numbers in seattle are pretty decent. If he's not possible, we could settle for Lafrentz, he's also a pretty dependable defender inside. With little help we can develop him as an inside defender and a long range threat.

James posey is one of my favorite role players. He can defend very well in the perimeter and we can rely on his occasional outside shooting.

Udoka will almost certainly opt out, a la Bowen 2002, and I allowed for rookie deals (Splitter). The "math" is spot on. Eight players, five spots to fill, MLE, LLE, mins/vetmins, rookie contracts, one trade exception ($2+M) to work with. That is your realistic scenario to work with. If you think Udoka will play for the bare minimum again and won't opt out and need to be re-signed, we can make a avatar title bet.
too bad udoka doesnt have an opt-out next year.

*edit* apparently, exstatic decided to remove his post mid repley.

D. Gibson
W. Hermann
J. Moon
R. Gomes
P. Millsap
F. Jones
J. Posey

Don't count on the Spurs bringing any free agent in that's under 30 or actually coveted.

Udoka likes it here. From all accounts the Spurs like him too. I would expect him to have a long stay in San Antonio. I'd be disappointed if he didn't.

No free agents that could really make much of a difference, but Rasho would be nice!

Kwame Brown? Elson too on the cheap wouldn't be too bad.

Maggette would be interesting... and we do have a history we him don't we with the Barry trade rumors?

Ricky Davis is a black hole. The ball goes to him and it never comes out again.

Some of his PPG totals are good, but he needs A LOT of shots to get those point totals - and he's more than willing to take them.
