But it doesn't matter. I know how you guys are. You'll go off the final results and just assume that Kidd was 10' behind on every play.

I watched the game and saw Kidd play pretty badly in that he didn't pass the ball well, and he played absolutely atrocious defense.

He passed the ball well enough for a guy that has been with his new team for just over 24 hours and has gone through a 90 minute practice and a walkthrough this afternoon. Not his fault Dampier has cinderblocks for hands and Eddie Jones thinks he can receive a pass while standing out of bounds. He did make some passes and ran the break (the couple times they did break) better than I've seen Harris do it. He fought through the Chandler screens well (again, something Harris wasn't always the best at) and came up with 3 steals on the night. He gets a pass because they haven't played together enough, but again - Paul's success wasn't directly attributed to Kidd defending him 1-1.

The play you speak of, I think Eddie Jones had his hands out to his sides, didn't look like he was calling for it.

that's part of the Mavs' problem, they can't match him up with quicker guards on a regular basis.
when he and JET are on the floor, JET can play the point, but he's never exactly been known for his defense either.
Kidd is still a plus help defender, but in terms on on-ball defense, the Mavs are looking at having 3 or 4 guys on the court who are below average at crunch time. only howard can be counted on to stay between his man and the rim.

And I want you to explain why Kidd wasn't defending Paul...
You see...had you been an NBA Fan 5 years ago, you'd have seen Jason Kidd openly begging for help with Tony Parker in the finals...and asking to not have to guard him.
You'd have also seen...the Nets cease to guard Parker with Kidd and start guarding him with Kerry Kittles.
He can't guard speedy PG's...
FACT.
And he'll be the first one to admit it.
That's why we're happy...because Devin Harris guarded Parker better than any player in the NBA....and to make it worse, he scored on Parker while he was doing it...unlike Kidd.
You guys started giving us shit when you got Devin Harris to put on Parker.
This isn't spin...old school Spurfans knew this was going to happen and this is why no one cared about the Kidd trade, and if anything were openly rooting for it....if it meant no more Harris.

Why the fuck would anyone watch a Nets-Spurs Finals? Kids from the Make-A-Wish Foundation would rather opt for a quick death than to have to sit through that. Nice try at your little insult, though.
All the credit goes to Paul. He hit some amazing shots tonight. The Hornets would be below .500 if it weren't for him. The Mavs switched off their screens a lot tonight and Paul found himself confronted with Dampier or George. From there, it was a walk into the paint for an easy shot. The high screen killed the Mavs tonight, as it has for most of the year. But it's not like we saw Paul bring it up, clear everyone out to be 1-1 on Kidd and then proceed to juke his ass or throw up a 3 in his face. Team defense on Paul was shit and yes - Kidd was obviously part of the team in these lapses.

And I promise you....Kidd cannot guard Parker. I look forward to you finding this out the hard way...dumbass.
PS: The Spurs defense is predicated on disrupting the passing of dominant PG's...it does that better than it does anything else.
That's why they annually lead the league in fewest APG allowed...and flat own teams with high assist PGs...like the Nash Mavs, and Suns.
You guys started beating us when your offense stopped being predicated on passing and started being about one on one attacking...we didn't have the athletes to put on all of them.
Note the season you guys started kicking our ass was when your assists per game total fell substantially...
In short...if you get your dumb fucking Mavs skull out of your ass you'll see why we are happy about this trade...and not, oh say....the trade for Shaq.

What's your fucking problem? I answered your question of the Mavs defensive issues tonight and you proceed to act like a child. You think that maybe, just maybe the Mavs might be concerned about the 6 other teams that will make the playoffs in the West and not just your precious Spurs? Everyone is acting like Devin Harris is God's gift to basketball and that the Mavs wouldn't come close if it weren't for him. There's a 7 foot tall German that you seem to have forgotten about. He'll still get his against your guys. Get off the fucking Kool-Aid for once and take a step back.

Chris Paul threw up 33 and 12 on the Mavs back in December, with defensive ace Devin Harris in the lineup. No doubt Harris was a matchup problem for the Spurs, but the Mavs made this deal because he's not the distributor that Kidd is. What good is it if you can beat San Antonio if you can never advance far enough into the playoffs to face them?
It's a risky move, but one the Mavs felt that they had to make. The Spurs are the defending champs, but last I checked, you have to beat four teams to win a title, not just them. Chris Paul makes a lot of people look bad, not just Jason Kidd. We just got a new PG, and it was obvious they weren't in sync because they had never played together before....not knowing where to set picks, where guys want it, a lot of turnovers because guys didn't know where Kidd was going to set them up. It's going to take time to build continuity and chemistry. The biggest potential drawback in the trade is that they have only two months to get that on-court chemistry going, not because they gave away a couple of matchup killers that cause problems for a conference rival. We still have Josh, Jet and Dirk, who are all Spurs killers, and now they have a PG who is going to make their life even easier?

I couldn't help but think that the biggest potential drawback to this trade isn't losing Harris and Diop because of how they give the Spurs fits. What good does it do to be able to beat the Spurs if you can't advance far enough to face them?
How long has Kidd been on the trading block? It's probably going to take about 10 games or so for these guys to get some kind of on-court chemistry going. There isn't that kind of luxury this year in the West. A lot of the sloppy turnovers came from guys not being in the correct position to receive his passes, not being in sync on where to set the picks, etc. Switching out your PG two months before the money season doesn't leave for much time to get it together, it's a bigger adjustment to replace quarterbacks than it is for Shaq or Gasol to take up space on the low blocks for their respective teams.
I'm wondering why they couldn't have done this earlier. But we have a nice little three-game stretch of Grizzlies, T-Pups and Bulls to get us back in the W column.

You guys flat out screwed up by trading Devin Harris...Period....at least when it comes to playing us.
Man I hated that dude...probably like you guys hate Manu.

Go fuck yourself, whottt. Fucking wannabe Internet tough guy.
WTF?
I have never threatened anyone on this board...I really get tired of hearing that.
IF you think I won't be an asshole in person in an argument...I will. I can't help it. It's just my nature. I just try not to argue in person, actually I don't even like arguing in person, because they do get heated etc. it's just not worth it. But here? It's why I'm here. If you say something stupid you should be prepared to get called out for it.
An internet tough guy is someone who threatens people...and I have never done that. In fact I laugh at people that get that mad...
Get the difference.

It's not a slam dunk like Rasheed going to the Pistons in 2004. And I was against the idea of trading for Kidd, for much of those reasons, that Harris and Diop were vital against the Spurs, it would fuck our cap situation, and we still had a young nucleus. But you have to admit, that even though we've won 9 out of the last 14 games against you guys, the playoff series was decided by the length of a fingernail, and it's not like we own you guys, the Spurs were more than capable of beating the previous incarnation of the Mavs.
I think the team started from the same proposition as Phoenix: We're probably not going to win a title as is, so we need to go in a different direction. I've never seen the West this top-heavy and tight this late in the season, as we're simultaneously 3 games out of the 1 seed and 2 games away from the lottery.
Kidd is a better passer, has better court vision, and is better defending the bigger guards like B-Diddy than Devin Harris. It's not like Devin Harris is a shut-down defender, he just tends to cancel out Tony Parker. It's risky, but the Mavs don't have four titles, they're desperately trying to win just one.

And you know...you guys might have had the team to do it this season.
Kidd's strengths play to the Spurs strenghts defensively...and Paker plays to Kidd's weakness densively.
Harris OTOH played to our weakneeses on both sides of the ball.
We'll see what happens...but the reason so many Spursfans are celebrating this trade is legitimate...it's because of how badly Kidd matched up on Parker in the 2003 NBA finals...and Parker was just 20 years old then, and Kidd was in his prime.
Like I said...you guys feel you're better? More power to you...but a lot of us are thrilled Devin Harris is gone...because he was like your Manu when it came to matching up with us.

Oh, I totally understand, I made pretty much the same argument. I felt this team deserved one more shot after coming so close in 06 and playing at such a dominant level before peaking too early last year. If anything, Avery is now on the hot seat. If we lose in the first round again, I wouldn't be surprised if he's let go.

Possibly but I think Parker on the perimeter and Duncan in the interior have a better shot at slowing down Paul.

Hey, Mav Fan calling whottt a Mav Fan isn't cool. Spurs fans can get away saying that because that's Spurs fan on Spurs fan violence. Mav Fan doesn't get that leeway. Call one of us a Mav Fan and you are insulting all of us.
Besides ... whottt's right. Devin Harris is the only point guard in the league who can stay in front of Parker defensively. And as far as Chris Paul goes, Parker has historically dominated him. Out of all their matchups, Paul has had the upper hand in only two or three of those games. Kidd, on the other hand, is going to get burned by Paul, Williams and Parker every game due solely on speed and quickness. If the Spurs and Mavs play in the playoffs, Kidd will have to end up guarding Bowen.
And not only Harris, freakin' Diop was one of two players in the NBA (along with Camby) who can block Parker's tear drop. Outside of Dirk and Howard, if I had to pick two players to take away from the Mavs, Harris and Diop might have been at the top of the list. Jason Kidd? Eh, if the Spurs lose to a Jason Kidd team, they weren't winning the championship anyways. Everything Kidd does is what the Spurs specialize in defending against.

Seriously...I always loved playing the Mavs that averaged 25 assists per game to get their 100 points, because I'd look at the Spurs allowing 17 assists per game....defense overrules offense every time.
Then...I looked at the Mavs after Nash and they were still scoring 100 ppg...and the Spurs were still giving up only 17 apg...
But I knew were in trouble when I saw the Mavs were doing that only averaging 16 APG...there was no passing for the Spurs D to disrupt...and Harris was a huge part of that.
That's what got us...and AJ knew it would, because he knew what the foundation for our D was...from inside experience.
The little trick AJ pulled...it was the #1 thing the Mavs were doing to beat us. We could not disrupt their offense the way AJ had it structured...and Pop was forced to go to smallball to hang with them offensively. AJ forced us to give up our D...and forced Pop to become an offense oriented coach.
That's gone now...completely....
And not only Harris, freakin' Diop was one of two players in the NBA (along with Camby) who can block Parker's tear drop. I hadn't even thought about Diop but yeah...he was a problem too...too bad we couldn't have ditched Terry in this deal somehow...then we'd be looking at sweeping the Mavs.

Did any of you watch the game or are you just going off the final boxscore? Because if you actually watched the game you'd know that Kidd wasn't always defending Paul on every play.
But it doesn't matter. I know how you guys are. You'll go off the final results and just assume that Kidd was 10' behind on every play.
Nice -- trade left you with a PG that can't or won't pull duty on the elite PGs and Notwitzki anchoring the post.

And if the trade didn't go through when it did, the Mavs would still be without Harris here for 2 weeks. Who's to say they'd fare much better with the Barea/Terry backcourt in that span?

fck the regular season. Dallas was really the only team I certainly didn't want to see in the playoffs before this trade.
Now? Bring it.

Im still not completely sold this "seals the deal" for the Spurs if we match up with the mavs in the playoffs, but it definately didnt hurt. Devin Harris was a Spurs killer, as well as Diop. Getting rid of them doesnt help the mavs at all if we meet up.
But still, they are a good team and should still be respected.
I want to believe we can trash them like we used to do back before 2005 but I just dont see it being that easy.....
That being said, Tony drops his nuts right on Kidds chin and forehead like nobody's business. :smokin

I totally agree with this. Mavs were right there, and getting more playoff experience every year. These guys were getting "seasoned" in the playoffs...and I think people underate that.
They needed another chance, they were close...very close. I feared Dallas more than any other team.
This is a major chemistry break-up for a team that was a major contender. Something I don't think the Spurs FO would ever do, and might be the major difference between teams like the Spurs and Mavs. I think the Mavs FO was impatient and panicked. The Spurs trade was more of a complement to the team...the Mavs trade was a major change.
A major change I'm not sure was that necessary.
That Golden State loss freaked Cuban to over reacting, imho.
...and Chris Paul is just insane. He'll abuse anyone and everyone.
