HOUSTON -- Within minutes of the Seattle SuperSonics releasing guard Brent Barry Friday, the Houston Rockets were on the phone with Barry's agent, Arn Tellem, offering a two-year deal.

"We are offering the maximum allowed on a two-year contract," said Daryl Morey, Rockets General Manager. "We are in full pursuit."

And not just in the figurative sense. The Rockets are literally going after Barry.
"Coach (Rick) Adelman and I plan to go to San Antonio and meet with Brent," Morey said. "We want to give him the full treatment."

Barry's father, Rick, played for the Rockets during the 1978-1979 season and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. His brother, Jon, played for the Rockets for two years and is currently an NBA television analyst.

Brent Barry is a 13-year veteran. Including this season Barry played for the San Antonio Spurs for four years, helping them to two NBA titles. He was traded to Seattle Wednesday in the deal that sent Kurt Thomas to the Spurs. He was included to make the deal work financially and was released 48 hours later.

The Spurs would like to re-sign him. The Phoenix Suns, L.A. Lakers, and Boston Celtics have also expressed interest.

"We think Brent can be a key piece in our playoff run if we can get him," Morey said. "We think he can help us in a significant way."

The first day Barry can sign with any team is Tuesday.

Spurs to Rockets: "We basically gave you Scola we did a great favor for you guys. Now it's your turn to return it. Pretend you are going hard after Barry. Then act as though you've decide to not follow through with the deal. We'll be waiting with open arms for Barry."

Yeah right. Pissed? I'm sure Pop had a conversation with him. It's no coincidence that he was cut right away. He's still injured, and needs to rest for a little while anyway. So, this 30 days off is perfect and he will resign with the Spurs in a month.

I doubt he was pissed.

You might want to get out of the first round before you start claiming that Houston will win a title :toast

you think, wow I didn't know you had to get out the first round to win a title.

Fuck, you guys are smart. :rolleyes

He's still gonna get his contract paid for. If someone pick him off the waiver they will, if not it will be on the Sonics book until it expires this summer.

Anything he gets after clearing waivers is extra, so therefore it's also in Brent's interest to be signed AFTER he clears waivers.

And the spurs say...we don't really want you at all, we've been trying to trade you for two years. Now that you're hurt we can finally do it.

The spurs didn't want to pay his salary either you know.

If SA got Barry back wouldn't it be after March 1st, which would make him not eligible for their playoff roster?

Just asking because I don't know if the rule applies to that situation.

No, he was waived before March 1st so it doesn't apply.

On topic, looks like Dirk and Kidd called Barry. He'd be lethal in our system spreading the floor, but I'm sure it's a done deal for him to return to San Antonio:
