Cleveland’s James and San Antonio’s Ginobili Named NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week

NEW YORK, Feb. 25, 2008 – The Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James and the San Antonio Spurs’ Manu Ginobili today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Tuesday, Feb. 19 through Sunday, Feb. 24.
During a 3-1 week for the Cavaliers, James recorded back-to-back triple-doubles (Feb. 19 vs. Houston and Feb. 20 at Indiana) and averaged a triple-double (28.8 points, 12.3 rebounds, 10.5 assists) over Cleveland’s four games. James became the first player since Magic Johnson in 1988 to record triple-doubles on consecutive days twice in the same season, as he previously posted back-to-back triple-doubles on Nov. 24 and Nov. 25. For the week, James led the Eastern Conference in assists, was third in rebounding and fourth in scoring.

Ginobili guided the Spurs to a 3-0 week, averaging 30.7 points, 6.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds. Ginobili, who leads the Spurs in scoring at 20.7 ppg, hit the game-winning jumper against the Timberwolves on Feb. 21, to cap a 44-point night. Over his last five contests (all victories), Ginobili shot .640 (55-for-86) from the field and .591 (26-of-44) from three-point range. Also during his last five games, Ginobili has two 40-point efforts (at Cleveland on Feb. 13 and at Minnesota on Feb. 21), and set career highs in rebounds (15 at Toronto on Feb. 21) and assists (12 vs. New Orleans on Feb. 23).

Here is a recap of the week for James and Ginobili:

LeBron James, Cleveland
Feb. 19 vs. Houston: Tallied 26 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in a 93-85 loss to the Rockets.
Feb. 20 @ Indiana: Posted a second-straight triple-double with 31 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists in a 106-97 win over the Pacers.

Feb. 24 vs. Memphis: Totaled 25 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists in a 109-89 win over the Grizzlies.

How could it be anybody but Manu in the West?

As for James, I remember when he came into the league he said something about his goal being to average a triple double. Now I see what he meant.

Didn't he win one last year with LeBron as the East player of the week, too? Hope this doesn't jinx Manu's play. :lol

Of course, the only team worth a shit that James played was Houston, and the Cavs dropped that one.

Duncan could make a case for player of the month, so far in February: 21 ppg, 13 rpg, 4 apg, and 3 bpg (rounded up on some of the stats). He won't win it though.

Anyway, congrats to Ginobili, a very well-deserved recognition. Looking at his month stats, he could make a very strong case for player of the month as well.

This is the reason I'm upset with the entire Kobe-hyped theme. LeBron's numbers are always like this. But hey... Kobe never got an MVP and he really deserves one but you just can't hide the sun - LeBron is the most complete player playing basketball now. The rest of his team is almost garbage.

are there vegas odds on lebron averaging triple double a season at least once in his career?

I think about 70-30 against. It's just so hard to perform at such a high level without injury. Not to mention that he doesn't need to do that in the east to land them a top 4 seed.

His two most hated players.

Manu's in good company. Lebron is sick; our modern age Oscar Robertson.

I like Lebrons game also but until he plays defense like Kobe he isnt complete
