Barry reportedly not returning to Spurs

Jerry Brown, Tribune

Brent Barry apparently isn’t going back to the Spurs. Now, the question is: Is he headed to the Suns?

Citing unidentified sources, Phoenix television station KSAZ (Channel 10) is reporting that Barry has informed the Spurs that he will not re-sign with them a week after being traded to Seattle in the Kurt Thomas deal. Reports had Barry at the AT&T Center picking up some personal items on Thursday.

It’s still not known where Barry will land. The Suns were believed to be the front runner early in the week and have kept in constant contact with the 36-year-old wing player since general manager Steve Kerr visited the Barry family in San Antonio on Tuesday.

Reports have the Dallas Mavericks making a late charge for Barry’s services as well, but the Suns have the most playing time to offer and have offered Barry a two-year contract at the veteran’s minimum of $1.2 million – prorated for the rest of this season.

The Celtics were interested in Barry initially but are now on the verge of signing veteran guard Sam Cassell, who was waived by the Clippers on Thursday.

The Suns remain very interested in Gordan Giricek of the 76ers, and reports in Philadelphia say that deal has been on hold while Barry makes his decision. It is looking more and more like the Suns will wind up with one of those two players this weekend.

This does contradict Cuban/TNT's claim. Hopefully this article is inaccurate but it looks relatively well sourced and confident in its claim.

Barry picks Spurs over Suns

Brent Barry will not be playing for Phoenix.

Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said the 36-year-old guard told him tonight that he chose San Antonio over Phoenix, as well as suitors like Boston, Dallas and Houston. Barry cleared waivers Tuesday after being traded by San Antonio last week to Seattle, which released him Friday to set off a weekend of recruiting.

He will not be able to sign a deal with San Antonio until March 21 because NBA rules prohibit a player from re-signing with a team that traded him until 30 days after the deal was made.

Barry, nicknamed "Bones" for his 6-foot-7, 210-pound frame, was targeted by the Suns to help them spread the floor better with another shooter and have another playmaking option with his ability to slide to point guard. Barry is a career 40.7 percent 3-point shooter and the Suns are trying to keep the floor spread as they work in Shaquille O'Neal, who can not play as wide as Shawn Marion did to start possessions.

Barry helped the Spurs win 2005 and 2007 titles and his family is settled in San Antoni. He was already guaranteed his full $5.7 million for the season from the Spurs but now can make a pro-rated veteran's minimum check in addition to it.

Barry is in his 13th NBA season out of Oregon State and has been with San Antonio since 2004.

With Barry, Phoenix would have boasted four of the 17 most accurate NBA 3-point shooters in NBA history with Steve Nash (sixth), Leandro Barbosa (11th), Barry (14th) and Raja Bell (17th).

I am sorry for the choice he made because I think he will regret it. Both his father and his brother recommended he join Phoenix. When you are in a relationship with an NBA player, you should put their best career interest ahead of your own wants, but Erin did not. I am disappointed.

Um...Barry has more rings than his father and brother combined...he's also the only one of them that isn't a total journeyman that annoyed the shit out of everyone he played with.

He's breaking the long standing Barry tradition of switching teams every few years and he's actually going to throw his lot in with a team...I giver him props for this.

Barry has spent his entire career trying to be the exact opposite of Rick Barry on the court...looks like he's going to do that with team selection as well.

You know...it probably would have been best for Brent from an individual standpoint to go to Phoenix...instead he went with his heart(and don't tell me his heart was in Phoenix) and decided to put something over money and over what's best for him...

This makes Brent Barry a class act and he should be celebrated in SA for it...

And that's a hell of a lot better than an extra 5 mins of playing time.

Props Brent

And welcome home, Spur :tu

I am disappointed.REally, what is Brent's best career interest?

He won't make any more money anywhere else.

He has the same if not a better chance to win another ring here.

He was averaging 20+ minutes a game for over a month before the injury because he was playing the way Pop always wanted him to.

What exactly is the downside of his staying in San Antonio?

What's funny is that you act like Erin forced Brent to stay here :lol I'm sure Brent wanted to stay here too. And bottomline is that it was a decision that he made for his career AND his family. It doesn't really matter what his dad, brother, me, you or Pop think. Barry did what he wanted to do and made the best decision for himself and his family.
