Barry picks Spurs over Suns

Brent Barry will not be playing for Phoenix.

Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said the 36-year-old guard told him tonight that he chose San Antonio over Phoenix, as well as suitors like Boston, Dallas and Houston. Barry cleared waivers Tuesday after being traded by San Antonio last week to Seattle, which released him Friday to set off a weekend of recruiting.

He will not be able to sign a deal with San Antonio until March 21 because NBA rules prohibit a player from re-signing with a team that traded him until 30 days after the deal was made.

Barry, nicknamed "Bones" for his 6-foot-7, 210-pound frame, was targeted by the Suns to help them spread the floor better with another shooter and have another playmaking option with his ability to slide to point guard. Barry is a career 40.7 percent 3-point shooter and the Suns are trying to keep the floor spread as they work in Shaquille O'Neal, who can not play as wide as Shawn Marion did to start possessions.

Barry helped the Spurs win 2005 and 2007 titles and his family is settled in San Antoni. He was already guaranteed his full $5.7 million for the season from the Spurs but now can make a pro-rated veteran's minimum check in addition to it.

Barry is in his 13th NBA season out of Oregon State and has been with San Antonio since 2004.

With Barry, Phoenix would have boasted four of the 17 most accurate NBA 3-point shooters in NBA history with Steve Nash (sixth), Leandro Barbosa (11th), Barry (14th) and Raja Bell (17th).

Ten years from now Suns fans will remember February 2008 as the last time their team had the lead in the Pacific Division. Phoenix's window is closed. Once the Spurs go into decline, the Lakers will retake their place atop the West. Enjoy that 2001 World Series Phoenix. It's the last time you'll experience a championship for a century.

No, not really. It's just status quo.. The NBA (players, gm's, agents) has been playing the Suns like a fiddle since Sarver took over. Barry is just another in the list of "almosts" for the org since the JoJo fiasco.

???

This thread opens with an article that says Steve Kerr was told by Barry that he's going with the Spurs.

What kind of "official" news are you looking for?

Kori Ellis

why there'a no official news any where?

Because he can't sign here yet. So it's not official. But I'd imagine you'd hear a statement from Barry or the Spurs tomorrow.

guys come on it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out, why do you all think the trade was 2 players for 1 there was supposed to be one more spot in the spurs roster and that spot was for bones.

Aside from Whott, I am a supporter of Brent Barry since day 1. I rally behind him when he was struggling on his first yr with the Spurs- learning the system, finding his stroke even suggested more minutes for him to prove his worth, and I still am.

I am so happy and welcoming back Bones again.

No sir, you are wrong! The Phoenix Mercury won their WNBA Championship also. That's 2 championships Phoenix fans have experienced in recent memory.

No trades for you!
http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2241134&postcount=13

Barry is not coming back to taco city...

The 30-day wait makes him inelegible for a playoff spot..

Sorry mofos!

He's going to the Suns...

March 1st is the day playoff rosters are set.

He is elegible to come back to the team that traded him after 30 days.

That would be March 21st.

Sorry mofo
