I'm sorry. I didn't realize I'd wandered into the Tim Duncan is AWESOME board and that you wuz the law 'round these here parts. Do I have until sundown to skedaddle?

Seriously, go back and read what you just wrote and if you don't feel embarassed, you should probably turn the computer off and go to bed. I never said he wasn't awesome, but if he continues to play the way he played against Brandon Bass tonight in his BIG game, you won't be thinking he's awesome after one or two rounds and an exit.

Was aimed at OP but ok, w/e

Duncan has never played the absolute best 1 on 1 post defense (though he plays well in that regard on balance), weak side help esp. against the pick-and-roll is his specialty which is usually a more useful skill set, maybe not this year considering the recent moves. KT can man up the Amare et al when he is ready for prime time. I'm not losing any sleep.

whatever, Bass had an outburst. Read as much as you want into that.

I was thinking about that as well. They are probably going to give it to Kobe, the golden Boy, but Timmy is sitting at 20.1 and 11.6 right now. If he finishes at say 21 and about 12, he'll get some votes for MVP for sure.

Nowitzki Praises Duncan As Spurs Win
By ELIZABETH WHITE
The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO -- Dirk Nowitzki has seen this before from Tim Duncan. The Spurs star had another typically excellent game. His totals: 31 points, 15 rebounds _ good enough to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 97-94 win over their in-state rival on Thursday night.

"He was just being himself," said Nowitzki, who had 28 points in the loss.

"(Duncan) had us going all night," Nowitzki said. "He was definitely a big factor for them."

Tim Duncan is both the most under-appreciated and best overall player in the NBA, when taking the span of his career into account. It's pretty much indisputable.

His appreciation-to-actual greatness ratio is probably the worst in the league. Although I really, REALLY like Manu, I appreciate TD more and he is the better player, no contest.

Does anyone know why Duncan's left index finger was taped tonight?

No, maybe he sprained it slightly and it was just pre-cautionary. Sure didn't effect his performance, so i am not worried about it. One thing that is underrated about Timmy is his toughness. This is a man that played the 2006 season basically on one foot. He can play through almost anything and win.

Duncan's quotes from tonight:

http://www.nba.com/spurs/news/quotes_080304.html#Duncan

Tim Duncan

On the game - “Defensively we weren’t very good and our focus was a little down but in this month with as many games as we have, every win is a good win. We got over the hump even though we didn’t shoot the ball well and did just enough to win the game. We obviously have to play a little better with the upcoming teams we face. We are disappointed with the way we played tonight but we’ll take the win.”

On tonight’s play being affected by playing New Jersey back-to-back - “No, I think we got a little bit of a lead and just got too comfortable. Instead of pushing it to 20 and getting the game over with, they hang around that 10 to 8 point mark and made it too much of a game.”

On recovering from the 8 for 25 shooting over the two game road trip - “I wanted to play better, obviously. I’ve been passing up some shots the last two games and have not been playing well, or feeling comfortable on the court. I got a little bit of work in this morning so I felt like I got some of my consistency back.”

On being aggressive in the post - “There was a lot less double teaming so I knew I could get shots off in there. In the last two games I actually got shots in the post but they were bad attempts and I didn’t finish them. I wanted to get better attempts, get some air under the ball and give myself a chance to make some shots.”

His interview is in the post game video:

From NBA.com http://www.nba.com/aroundtheassociation/080304.html

"It is that time of year again: March is doing its lion thing, which means, as it does every year, that the Spurs have traded in their modest excellence, which pre-All-Star break serves as camouflage in the West, for the ostentation of supremacy. Every year they outlast the strong starters around the league and suddenly become visible in the spring, at which point people look at the standings and say something like, "Don't look now, but the Spurs have the best record in the West."

But so much for the Spurs' steady success being outshined by the Suns and their big Shaquisition or drowned out by the Lakers and theirs (alternate puns severely lacking for Mavs, Hornets and Jazz): San Antonio, which sits at No. 1 in the Power Rankings, won its 10th straight game on Tuesday night, defeating New Jersey for the second time in three days. And, don't look now, but Tim Duncan is the best power forward in the West: He had 29 points and 12 rebounds in 34 minutes. BTW: The new New Jersey Net, Devin Harris, got his first start in his new Nets jersey, but for the first time failed to net 21 points. "

Uh....they are just now saying this? He has been for quite sometime! :clap

No, they've been saying it for years.

The point of it is that Duncan, and the Spurs, are always under the radar until this time of the season when all of a sudden everybody notices them.

Lots of articles say the same thing every year at this time. The Spurs are forgotten, written off, all the attention is on other teams. Last year it was the Mavs and the Suns, this year it's the Celtics and the Lakers. Then the Spurs wake up and begin to shape into playoff form. That's when they all start to notice and say what this article says.

Duncan has versatile game in rout of Kings

Tim Duncan had 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs on Friday, adding three assists, two steals and three blocks in a rout of the visiting Kings.
After losing four straight games, the Spurs have now righted the ship and have a humble two-game winning streak going. One thing owners can always count on? Tim Duncan playing like an MVP.

He has just become such a great leader over the years as well. He is the man and the Spurs all know it and respect the hell out of him. When you go to battle with a guy that great and clutch, everyone on the team is relaxed.

I also would really apperciate a photo of Tim blocking Dwight Howard's dunk attempt. That shit was just a sick rejection that was glossed over in the highlight packages on NBATV. I was like DAYUM, I didn't know that Timmy could still do it like that!!!!!!!!!!

He's something else. The stats don't do him justice tonight, though I adore the 9 offensive boards. He just turned up his intensity in the 4th. You could tell he had no interest in seeing this series continue. He rose, made sure it got done.

He was wonderful in his post game press conference. As always, he spoke highly of the opponent and even higher of his teammates. A class act like no other. He's a joy to watch.

Struggled with his shot a bit but man did he play big when he had too. Manu could not get it going Tim and Tony had to do it and boy did they ever. TIm was very clutch that running shot when he went bye Shaq late in the 4th was a thing of beauty. Hit the big J with Shaq in his face as well. What a game, what a player. :toast

I never doubted him but even I was starting to wonder if he was injured because of how he was playing the last few weeks of the season. He really paced himself more this season than he has in the past. It was almost scary, I can understand how doubt could creep in.

He rose as we all knew he could. And he's just getting warmed up. :)

Duncan and Shaq never seemed to like each other. As far back as the 2000 All Star game when they shared the MVP you could tell they weren't fond of each other. If you get a chance to see that Trophy presentation you'll see that they don't make eye contact then. They look uncomfortable together. And of course Shaq said he'd take the Trophy because Duncan already had a ring. :lol

I think their personalities are so far apart that there's no common ground. And the battle of who is the more dominate big man has been going on forever. I think Shaq was ticked that Duncan got a ring first, and I'm sure he's even more ticked now that Duncan has the better chance of getting the fifth before he does. Shaq did say when the trade was made that he wanted to get his fifth before Duncan got his.

Agreed and Tim is a very friendly guy you can see in pre-game and at tip off most of the players around the league like him very much. Shaq is friendly but he is also ten times more arrogant than Tim can ever be. He knew i feel that Tim was a huge rival to him right from the start so he almost made the point to be cold. He has a lot of respect for him though, i saw Shaq on ESPN news before the series and he was calling Duncan a "Legend" and things like that but no they are definately not friends at all.

Agree with all of it. I think there is mutual respect. I think Duncan is friendlier and more approachable by other players. I think Shaq is the most arrogant thing I've ever come across. And I definitely think Duncan was, and still is, a threat to Shaq. But at this point of his career all Shaq had was his mouth to shoot off about how dominate he is. Duncan had his game to prove it.

This series should be the end of the Duncan/Shaq conversation.

Agreed and i feel this puts a final chapter to that saga as well. I was worried big time about losing to the Suns because of how the damn media is with Shaq. I knew Tim was going to play great but if they lost a 7 game series, even if Shaq did not play all that well they were going to give him the lionshare of the credit for it. The media loves Shaq period, they spin the facts to suit that agenda. Hell just look at the end of this series. Spurs got no love at all from ESPN. It was all about what the Suns did wrong because almost every tool at the network picked them to beat the Spurs. I am glad it is over Timmy is still on top, sorry Shaq. :hat

I've said it before and I'll say it again, because I don't think people truly understand how amazing this is.

The best post player in the league, probably the world, can also step out and hit jumpers in rhythm off a screen. That's not even fair if you're a defender.

This guy is simply amazing and a true sign that hard work pays off. He has a below-average vertical, isn't too fast, isn't too strong, but he's good enough in all those aspects. He also works damn hard, as hard as any superstar will ever work.

There was an article on SLAM in 05 about Barry's decision to sign with the Spurs. He said one reason was that the summer that he went there to negotiate the contract, he saw Tim practicing defensive drills...in July.

We as Spurs fans are blessed to have a such a selfless, talented, and extrodinary player on our team. We should enjoy it too. Because someone like Tim is one in a million.

Yep. Brutal first 2 rounds for Tim. I'm thinking a front-line of Odom and Gasol won't look too intimidating to him after what he's been though.

He'll own both those clowns. The closer TD gets to the finish line the better he plays, Lakers are in for classic TD in this series.

Duncan is halfway there. He can smell it. The Championship blood is going from a simmer to a boil. He does so much for this team that doesn't show in a boxscore. Diving for loose balls. Talking to his teammates during plays, in huddles, in the locker room. Duncan at his worst is better than a lot of players in this league. He is the foundation. He will get his fifth. His repeat.

I believe in Duncan.

Words could not describe how good Duncan is (or is my command of English too poor to do that?) - I'll try.

He just came out of the offseason, well-conditioned, was as effective as ever, & committed to winning games as always. I didn't watch game 1, & knew that he grabbed Bonner's head when I read from this forum later. I'm sure this action wasn't intended to create tension in the locker room. It just showed how Duncan was determined to win games. I was able to watch game 2 live, & Duncan was just as fantastic. I hope more players step up so Duncan & Tony don't have to carry the team every game.

Hell yeah, nice vBookie to start the season and it wasn't even really close.

Tony also looks like a man on a mission along with Duncan. Now they need the rest of the crew to join in.

Duncan's been incredible on the offensive end of the ball. On the defensive end of the ball, he's been offensive.

I think the defense has been difficult given the poor showing of his running mates in the front court.

His rebounding has been poor, but other than that his defense has been pretty solid. He did a solid job on Aldridge when he gaurded him and did well against Shaq and Amare too. He's just not being tested at the rim as much so far this season.

Don't worry about Tim though, worry about our gaurds not boxing their guys out after the shot. Pheonix and Portland just drained jumpers on us all day when we were allowed to set up our halfcourt D. Other teams are wary of Tim's shotblocking so they're taking advantage of our currently craptacular perimeter D.

I believe part of the reason could be that he's trying to stay out of foul trouble since we're short on big men.

You gotta give Tim a free pass on his defense. I don't see the man he's guarding going off, it's usually the other guy (Center/Power Forward) because KT, Oberto, Bonner aren't doing their jobs. Or the perimeter guys can't keep their player in front of them so he has to leave his man to help.

So he has to cover up for mistakes his guys make AND he has to score 30+ points.

He's giving a ton of effort and its almost like Duncan's defending 1 on 3 most of the time.

Duncan blows up in win over Clippers (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/playerbreakingnews.asp?sport=NBA&id=467&line=103421&spln=1)

Tim Duncan hit 9-of-14 shots for 20 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks in Monday's win over the Clippers.

Nice. Owners have to be enjoying Duncan's early-season output, which was capped off by his best performance of the season tonight. He's scored 19 or more points in every game this season and the six blocks were a season high. Nov. 18 - 1:34 am et
