Gira's cut, almost a Sun

Philadelphia waived Gordan Giricek today. That sets up a 48-hour period in which any team can claim him on waivers but only business days count. That means he can't be signed until about midday Tuesday (Arizona time).

No team is expected to claim him off waivers because his negotiated buyout salary of about $3.7 million would count against that team's cap and any luxury tax hit, even though that team would only pay the pro-rated remainder of his salary.

Once Giricek clears waivers, the Suns plan to sign him to a pro-rated veteran's minimum contract for the remainder of the season. Because he can't sign until Tuesday, it looks like the earliest he might be able to join Phoenix is for a Wednesday game in Denver. Phoenix would leave for its Tuesday game in Portland after Monday's practice in Phoenix.

Giricek obviously will not accompany the 76ers for their game in Phoenix on Saturday night. He likely would be headed back to Philadelphia to gather what he needs for joining the Suns, if it all works out as expected.

Because Giricek was waived before Saturday's 9:59 p.m. deadline, he will be playoff eligible for whichever team signs him.

Whoopidy Foookin Doo...

Is there any other player in the league more useless than Gordan Giricek?
He's just a goon.

Another player that will play 3 minutes in the first half and none in the playoffs because of D'Antoni.

Congrats Stevie Kerr :tu

What? Is that true? It's only the buyout salary that you have to take on? If that's the case then why is nobody claiming Sam Cassell's $800,000 buyout salary off waivers??

It would be funny if Cubes offered Giracek more money to join the Mavs like he tried to do with Barry.

Even funnier if Giracek went there. Sun Fan would be jumping off cliffs in droves.

Oh I agree, Xylus. That wasn't aimed at intelligent Suns fans such as yourself.

I think D'Antoni will use him extensively... in blowouts.

Giricek is actually a surprisingly good defender. Last year with the Jazz, he was the team's go-to perimeter defender. Next to Bell, he'll probably be the best perimeter defender on the Suns.

But yeah, good luck on getting D'Antoni to play him. He'll most likely get the Piatkowski treatment.

D'Antoni can't stand ex-YU players since Drazen Petrović made him jumping off court trying to defend his fakes and dribbles. Whole hall was laughing to him.
