The lynch mob has formed around Avery's house and they are ready to hang him.

Seriously, almost everyone here is calling for his head right now, not at the end of the season, right now!

I doubt Cuban would do it, but with him you never know. Stay tuned!

As I said in another thread, AJ basically got fired when the Mavs traded for Kidd. Kidd is the ultimate coach killer. AJ will either get fired in the summer or early next season when Kidd sabotages the team. I just hope AJ joins Pop's coaching staff once he's let go.

The only way AJ has a job in Dallas at this point next year is if the Mavs win the championship.

Good take. The timer is definitely started on AJ's tenure in Dallas.

trading for Kidd and then making AJ available to join Pop's staff as the heir apparent would make Cuban my favorite NBA owner.

The Ultimate coach killer on the downside of his career may make that even worse for AJ. Mavs have to win right now, the window with this group is about 2 years. I don't see how a new coach will change things in Dallas but maybe AJ will be fine if Dirk is on his side, since he is their best player. Every other team he was on he had the power to act out and demand change, he has a lot less power in Dallas.

That would be sweet to have AJ back home in SA, but he's way too good to be an assistant.

I never did see how a control freak like AJ would be able to "coach" Kidd. For that matter, I don't think he would be good for any veteran team, especially one with a good PG. If I were Michael Jordan, I would hire him tol coach the Bobcats.

He became my favorite after the Finley deal. :lol
Read in dallasnews.com that Mavs are paying Michael $18mil this yr. :madrun

This is a little strong.

Are you basing this on Byron Scott?

How coulf a HoF PG who is lauded as the ultimate team leader be accused of "sabotages the team"?

A lot of people were calling for AJ's head last season when he changed the starting line up for game 1 of the Warriors series.

I don't agree. Many will be unwilling to hire him and I don't see him going to any black holes (sacto, twolves, etc). Right now he is a typical one-and-done type of coach who is going to have to coach his way back to a nice job by riding someone else's pine (i.e. PJ).

He most resembles Paul Westphal - former player, taken under HC's wing, becomes HC with a weath of talent, goes to Finals in 1st year and loses, was fired soon after (Westphal lasted just 3.5 years).

The funny thing about that is, Westphal is currently on AJs bench and would most likely be the iterim HC if AJ is fired.

Hypothetical question....

Let's say Pop retires in 4 years (he always said he'd leave the bench around when Timmy does). If AJ was on the market and the Spurs needed a head coach, would you bring him in for an interview?

For all of his failures he has accomplished some good things as a coach. He developed an isolation-based offense that features his players strengths, made it to the finals, and helped develop some young talent like Bass.

He's familiar with the city, culture, system, etc. Plus the success of the organization might put him in his place....a bit. He may loosen up over the next few years.

Why would we want him back? What is he good at exactly? Maybe he's a so-called "defensive specialist" but don't we already have the best defensive tactician in the game as our coach? Plus, I don't think either Manu or Tony have a very good relationship with him, which is perfectly understandable.

That's not saying I disagree with you. I don't think he's got a long future there either. I think all the proof you need is that he went to Cuban and said trade Dirk and Cuban refused.

I don't think Duncan would approve of AJ being on the staff and we all know he had veto power over things like that.

Fuck AJ. He is a shitty coach anyway. Sure, he's got a pussy for his best player, but he has done nothing but choke away series they should have won and gotten outcoached along the way.

I hope he never sits on SA's bench again.

So Pop was outcoached by a "shitty coach" in the '06 playoffs?

uh yeah....played small ball instead of enforcing our will. Pop is great, but he got outcoached by a shitty coach that series.

How do you figure many will be unwilling to hire him? He's been great for Dallas, sure they choked with Miami (more the players) and GS last yr (bad match up). Not many coaches out there who are better IMO.

What has he done, exactly? He was handed a finalscaliber team, he completely lost them in the finals, he was unable to overcome Nellie's tactics in a 7-game series - which Nellie's tactics NEVER work in a 7-game series, he can't keep his owner from trading away a future superstar and the best shot they have of defending Duncan for an allstar on his last legs, he takes his best facilitator who is that superstar they traded their future for out the last 30 seconds of the game for Terry who decides to drive instead of dishing to a completely wide open Stackhouse in the corner, he continually sticks his little foot in his mouth and gives the Spurs more bulliten board material than they know what to do with...

IMO you need to cash in your IMO for a new one; Avery ain't done squat.

Yeah, maybe the Mavs will hire Nellie back.
