Sam Presti continues the San Antonio Mafia back scratch by waiving Ira Newble. The Spurs should consider offering him a pro-rated vet minimum out of their MLE money--even espite the logjam at SF. Why?

Newble comes from Mike Brown's system and could pick up our defenisve schemes quickly

Newble is a capable perimeter defender to use in spot minutes against a Howard, Bryant or LeBron

Newble should have a good idea how to guard LeBron--we could see the Cavs in the Finals

Newble provides insurance against a Barry calf reinjury

Newble played really well this year for Cleveland, I'd rather they didn't resign him

Ira Who? Had to go to the NBA historical records of players to find him. Not in the current roster of NBA players. Now that's fast computer input.

We had him his first year in the league. I doubt we'll be interested in picking him up.

2nd worst behind Vaughn. But for a few hundred thousand, I can think worse 15th men. And here is a 15th man who could potentially be used in an emergency situation.

Spurs had him already. I get the feeling he wasn't a "fit" here, personality-wise.

He also turned 33 last month.

Oh, and someone call Steve Kerr. Donyell Marshall wasn't released ahead of another player, AGAIN. This must be a Pop conspiracy.

Oh well then, he is the perfect age! :lol

I rather see Spurs trying some young player from the D-league with their 15th spot.
I think Newble is an unnecessary insurance.

If, during the runup to the playoffs and in the playoffs, you need your 15th man, you're screwed anyway.

Let Ian be 15th man, sitting, but experiencing playoff intensity up close.

Ian is already the 14th man.

Like Ime is shooting lights out :rolleyes

But I do agree that Ira would not earn any time in spurs roster right now.

Yeah that Udoka can't shoot at all :rolleyes

Watch the games one time and you'd notice Udoka sans the Mavericks game, has been playing damn good basketball.

Who says he isn't?
But he is not a shooter, that's it. The fact.

He's 33 years old - meaning he's too young for the Spurs.

As a 14th-15th man, Newble would actually be pretty good value for this team. The only thing the Spurs are lacking is a Long Three ... and while Newble isn't that, he's reasonably close. Sure he sucks but as a guy who will be in a suit most of the time, the Spurs could do worse.

Newble is probably a better matchup against Dirk than anyone the Spurs currently have.

If by "not a shooter" you mean:
A guy who can hit the open 3 and also has a good midrange J.

Then YES, you are absolutely right. He's "not a shooter"

Like hell Udoka isn't a shooter. Ime's got very nice range, but like Barry, Finley, Kerr, Steve Smith, Hedo, etc before him it will take a while before he becomes comfortable enough to bag the shots like he should. It's pretty well documented that our three point threats never live up to their normal standards until into their second year here.
