Bobcats waive Jeff McInnis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Charlotte Bobcats waived point guard Jeff McInnis on Friday, a move intended to make Raymond Felton the full-time point guard.
McInnis started 26 of the 54 games he played this season, averaging 4.5 points and 4.1 assists. Coach Sam Vincent had been using McInnis and Felton together for much of the season in a small backcourt.
McInnis was criticized by Vincent after a loss to Philadelphia a month ago, leading to a testy exchange between the two. A few days later the Bobcats signed point guard Earl Boykins, but McInnis had still been an on-and-off starter and there was no visible rift between McInnis and Vincent.
The move ends the experiment of Felton playing shooting guard, and allows McInnis a chance to catch on with a playoff team down the stretch.
McInnis, who grew up in Charlotte and played at North Carolina, was acquired from New Jersey in a January 2007 trade. The Bobcats re-signed him to a one-year, $1.2 million contract in August.
Calls placed to McInnis’ agent, Steve Kauffman, were not immediately returned.
