Newman spent the last four years in Milwaukee working under George Karl, who was fired last month.

New Jersey coach Byron Scott, whose Nets have reached the NBA finals the last two seasons, lost two assistants this summer. Eddie Jordan left to coach the Washington Wizards and then hired Mike O'Koren as an assistant.

Before joining the Bucks, Newman coached in college since the late 1980s. He had a five-year stint as head coach at Sacramento State and a one-year job as interim head coach at Arizona State.
