Bruce's start against the New Orleans Hornets on March 12, 2008 was his 500th in a row, the longest active streak in the NBA. Here are a few highlights during the epic tenure of the Spurs' iron swingman.
1 - Bowen ranked second on the all time list at the start of the 2007-08 season having made 529 three point baskets. Former Spur Sean Elliott made 563 three pointers in his career with the Spurs. Bowen has made 68 thee pointers to date this season putting his total at 597, good enough to surpass Elliott for first on the Spurs all time list. Bowen is also first on the Spurs all time list for three pointers made in the playoffs (134).
2 - The NBA’s Community Assist Award has been given to Bowen twice in his career (3/05 and 1/06). The Community Assist Award is given monthly to an NBA player that is actively involved in bettering the community. A $5,000 donation is made by the NBA to the winning player’s desired foundation. Bowen teamed up with H-E-B and the Spurs Foundation to create the Bruce Bowen Foundation that focuses on healthy living for underprivileged youths.
2a - Bowen played in two different leagues in 1996/97 before solidifying his status as an NBA player. In the 1996-97 season, Bowen played professionally in France to start the season where he averaged 23.2 points per game. He then moved on to the Rockford Lightning in the CBA where he averaged 17.8 points per game before being signed to a 10-day contract by the Miami Heat on May 16, 1997.
4 - The NBA’s All-Defensive First Team has featured Bowen’s name for the past four seasons. Bowen finished second in voting for Defensive Player of the Year award in the 2006-07 season. He joins Tim Duncan and David Robinson as the only Spurs to be named to the NBA’s All-Defensive Team four or more times.
6 - Only six ‘swingmen’ have ever been named to the NBA All-Defensive Team in seven or more straight seasons. Bowen joined the elite group of stoppers when he was named to the All-Defensive team last season. Other names on the list include Scottie Pippen (1999-00), Bobby Jones (1977-85), John Havlicek (1969-76), Michael Cooper (1981-88) and Walt Fraizer (1969-75).
7 - Bowen has been named to the NBA’s All-Defensive Team (either first or second team) for the past seven seasons. He has been named to the First Team the past four seasons and was named to the Second Team in 2001, 2002, and 2003. He is one of three active players to be named to the NBA’s All-Defensive team for seven consecutive seasons (Tim Duncan 10 consecutive, Jason Kidd nine consecutive).
24 - In a 100-83 win over the L.A. Lakers on January 4, 2005 Bowen scored a career-high 24 points. Bowen made five three pointers in the contest and was the high scorer for the Spurs on that date.
100 - Two other players in the Spurs history have in played more playoff games than Bowen. Bowen has played in 100 playoff games for the Spurs in his career behind only Tim Duncan (138) and David Robinson (123).
500 - No currently active NBA player has started more consecutive games than Bruce Bowen. He holds the Spurs franchise record of consecutive games started at 500, and has started 163 more consecutive games than the second longest current streak in the NBA (Tayshaun Prince 337). Bowen has not missed a game since a 99-91 Spurs win over the Phoenix Suns on February 26, 2002.
