If we as fans stay humble, then yes.

Although, Jesus said not to test God. He was a pretty wise dude.

So while God is more than likely a Spurs fan, I think God would allow evolution to run it's course. Even God desires anticipation, because without it you can't expierence the joy and exhiraration that follows. It's the ying and the yang baby!

Just an opinion, take it for what it's worth.

I'm sure God's existence can be reasonably established without bringing the Spurs into it. If there is no God, then one can argue that objective values and morals become meaningless, the universe wouldn't hold together, etc. Not sure the Spurs losing quite qualifies.

In other words, he's there regardless of who wins. Although I would agree that God "ought" to arrange the universe so that the Spurs, indeed, bring home the trophy again. Then again, who are we to say that God "ought" to do anything?

Plato grappled with this one: is something good because God did it, or did God do it because it is good?

How'd you come to know this? I mean, is this a "probably there is no God," "there might be one," or, "the evidence is not convincing". Or is it, "I know absolutely that there is no God"? Even Hume and Nietzsche stopped short of saying that.

A valid observation -- a new look at theodicy, or the problem of evil.

We can state is thusly: "How could a good God create jerks, or Sons fans?" MY answer would require some research, but it would probably be a combination of the soul-making (God wants Spurs fans to learn strength) and teleological (God and the Spurs will win in the end) theodicies.

Doesn't free will come into play here? While according to the doctrine of ancestral sin, men are subject to death and corruption, and even worse, a tendency to want to root for the Suns, because Adam rooted for the Suns in the Garden of Eden, men ultimately still have to make the choice to disobey God and to follow Phoenix.

Quite right. The existence of evil, and Sons fans, is strong evidence of an objective good, and God. Or the fact that we fans have a strong urge that you OUGHT to root for somebody, and that switching teams is bad, etc., is the basic gist of the moral argument for God's existence. We have these "feelings" about absolute right and wrong, and we really can't shake them. Naturalism provides no answer for this.

I'll have to work on the Spurs version of the teleological argument for God's existence (the Spurs are so perfectly created and finely tuned, there must be a perfect and wise creator), the cosmological argument (from what did Tim Duncan come? well, what caused his parents? etc.), and the ontological argument.

Sure it does...we don't know "right and wrong" from birth, we learn it from our parents, teachers, and life experiences.

The Celtics won tonight because overall they played better basketball than the Spurs through 48 minutes of game time. That's it. Period.

I would say it's a bit of a false dichotomy. It is certainly possible to conceive of a world in which (a) God exists and yet (b) the Spurs fail to repeat. And how does the Spurs' success logically follow from God's existence?

And ... how did you receive this knowledge? That IF there is a God, THEN the Spurs repeat? If you got this knowledge from someone else, then how did he receive his knowledge with certainty? If you got it from God, then aren't we begging the question? How can you be so sure about your proclamation?

And last, is your axiom a timeless principle? In other words, was there not a God in 2000, 2004, and 06, when the Spurs did not repeat? If there was not a God, then how is it possible that he just comes into being if and when the Spurs repeat? And if His existence depends on the Spurs, then who controls who? Wouldn't the Spurs be God then?

I know. Questions, questions.

I expect your answers typed, double-spaced, at least pages on my desk by Monday.

I believe there is a God, and I am confident that God would never favor Spurs fans' wishes over Suns fans' wishes or vice versa. And I certainly believe that selfishly asking Him to serve one's own petty, hedonistic desire as proof that He exists probably will warrant but the sound of a cricket as a reply.

If there is a God, he wouldn't give a damn about a lousy playoff series. Heck, he doesn't give a damn about more serious things like people blowing each other up all around the world. By definition, God isn't stupid and doesn't do these stupid things... we stupid people do these things to ourselves.

And so if the Spurs prevail in this series, it's the work of Pop, Timmy, Manu, and the rest of the team, not God. God takes care of his business from wherever He (She?) is, and the Spurs take care of their business on the basketball court!

A big question. Certainly if we were to come to the final big grand realization that there is no God (or gods), if that were possible, that would cause rather large ramifications not only for people of the Christian faith, but Jews, Moslems, and practicioners of basically every theistic religion. Indeed, it seems that, no matter our attempts to shake it, humans are hard-wired towards faith. It's in our blood/genes/whatever to believe in a deity or deities. And, whatever problems that religion causes us, it also gives us the potential for great hope. Can you imagine the hopelessness that the nonexistence of God would create in, say, the missionary who's worked his whole life in some backward country? Or the prisoner locked up in a prison cell in China because he was a Christian? I'll narrow it down closer toward Christianity -- the good news of the Gospel (God loves you, has provided for our salvation, will never leave us or forsake us) would be totally illusory and not true. I'm not sure there would be much real meaning in it all.

And it's not just Christians who say that. Read the later works of Sartre, Camus, Nietzche (pre-insanity) -- all influential atheists -- they knew full well that God's nonexistence entailed the lack of any hope beyond this life. It entailed the loss of all REAL meaning. (Now, they tried to suggest that perhaps there are "little meanings" in the details of our lives, but ultimately, on the big stage, there was no "big meaning.")

So that's one argument. It would be a terrible tragedy. We ALL live our lives on the presupposition (whether we admit it or not) that there is meaning to our lives. We all do. And I'm not sure how the atheist accounts for these very real feelings of meaning and significance.

There are other arguments, though.

Well, actually, the separation idea is an attempt to balance the establishment clause with the free-exercise clause of the first amendment. Religiously-informed viewpoints are welcome.
