The ultimate cover, which is leaps and bounds better than the original, so much so that the guy who did the original admits that the cover is better...

Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower.

Even Dylan plays the song the way Jimi covered it when he plays live, and he's been doing that for decades.

The Beatles cannot be covered.

The best yet so far is Rufus Wainwright but even he falls flat.

That's not true. Michael Jackson did a great cover of "Come Together" and - while I may be tied to it sentimentally thanks to it being the theme to The Wonder Years ... Oh that Winnie Cooper - Cocker's cover of "With a Little Help From My Friends" was very good.

Wainwright has an amazing voice and I love his songs in moderation, but his voice can whine at times and then annoys me.

Chris Cornell has a unique cover of Billie Jean that's pretty good. It's great until the chorus, but his arrangement is a bit of a let down. He doesn't even show off his pipes.

Orgy's cover of Blue Monday was great. I loved the original and loved the cover more.

Didn't Manson cover Tainted Love? I swear I heard it and thought it was great.

Cash with Hurt and Personal Jesus.

I really like Velvot Relvolver's cover of Psycho Killer.

Sublime has a great live cover of Sunday Bloody Sunday.

I'm not shitting on you for that.

If you like it, fine.

I just think it's the worst cover of Imagine that I have ever heard. They slow it down and drag it out so much that it's almost unrecognizable.

The song is about hope and possibilities, but Perfect Circle fills it with such depression and darkness that it kills the meaning of the song.

Fuck yeah. That's my favorite Metallica song and they did it well. The rest of the album is hit (Three of a PErfect Pair) and Miss (Cemetary Gates.)

But fuck covers, they made Colors, which has a good argument for best metal album ever made.

"Life on Mars" by David Bowie, but then again, I'm biased :)

They ought to release it as a single.

It's the Red Hot Chili Peppers covering the Beach Boys btw....it's amazing because they actually pull of the Beach Boys harmonies....including the Brian Wilson part. Who in the hell knew the Chili Peppers could pull that one off?

Check out "Tear" on the By The Way album for some pretty Beach Boys-esque harmonies... They've always had incredible melodic instincts, and now that Kiedis isn't trying to rap as much anymore, I think they're 100% better.

I'm too lazy to post the vids but they are all easy to find. These are my favorite that have yet to be mentioned:

Metallica - Turn The Page (Originally by Bob Seger)
HIM - Solitary Man (Originally by Neil Diamond)
HIM - Don't Fear The Reaper (Originally by Blue Oyster Cult)

And I could agree that Hendrix's cover of All Along The Watchtower is the best cover ever.

The ultimate cover, which is leaps and bounds better than the original, so much so that the guy who did the original admits that the cover is better...

Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower.

Even Dylan plays the song the way Jimi covered it when he plays live, and he's been doing that for decades.

/ thread. Nothign tops this

I can't stand Metallica, but this kicks so much ass:

Rodrigo y Gabriela - "Orion"

L0CsLefLisE

they also cover Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven"

Pretty impressive. I ahve seen them in a couple guitar mags but unfortunately did not give them the time of the day. I'll have to go back and re read those articles.

I like this one by The Agony Scene-Paint it Black

Finally got around to watching this. Easily 95% of its awesomeness lies in Flea's bass.

That's right, if it's popular, it sucks. I used to be like that (I was a huge fan of dysfunction and was really turned off when "outside" hit - still hate it, in fact) but then grew up. :toast

I actually couldn't stand either of these originals, but thought the "covers" were pretty creative.
