Spurs notebook: Ginobili misses on free-throw record

Sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.
Informed before the Spurs' game against the Orlando Magic that he was closing in on the Spurs' longest streak of consecutive free throws, Manu Ginobili managed to keep from thinking about the streak long enough to extend it to 42.
That put him just three shy of the all-time franchise record of 45, set by James Silas in 1975-76, the Spurs' final season in the American Basketball Association.
Ginobili didn't make his first trip to the free-throw line in Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers at the AT&T Center until 18.9 seconds remained. With the Spurs leading by six points, Clippers guard Brevin Knight intentionally fouled Ginobili to stop the clock.
Ginobili made the first foul shot, extending his streak to 43, but missed the second, denying him a shot at a piece of team history.
"Yes, I was (aware)," Ginobili said. "Somebody told me before Orlando. It worked OK there, as I made seven.
"Today was a stupid free throw to miss. The game was over. But I'm not really big with stats. I don't really care, but it was good to know I had that streak."
Ginobili was unaware how close he had come to the franchise record.
"I didn't know that," he said, "but no big deal. I don't care that much about historical stats. It's good with me."
Wait continues: Neither Brent Barry nor Robert Horry suited up for Wednesday's game. Barry continues to work on his conditioning and rehab work on his sore left calf.
Horry, who suffered a left knee contusion in last Friday's victory over Sacramento, had thought he might be able to play, but will wait until the shootaround before Friday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves to re-evaluate his injury.
McDermott honored: The Spurs' celebration of the franchise's 35 seasons, which has included presentations honoring important figures in club history, on Wednesday honored the late Gen. Robert McDermott, who served as Spurs' chairman from 1993 to 1996.
McDermott played an integral part in keeping the Spurs in San Antonio in the 1990s and recruited Gregg Popovich to be the team's general manager. McDermott had befriended Popovich when he served as dean of faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy and Popovich was a cadet and basketball star there from 1966 to 1970.
Spurs great David Robinson spoke about McDermott during a halftime ceremony, saying McDermott had a profound impact on his life.
