Denver rolls, Dallas sinks closer to that low lottery pick.

And Dallas could or should lose a good number of those games....wow...they sunk faster than Bear Stearns stock.

If Dallas improbably wins tonight, they will make the playoffs. They would clinch the season series tiebreaker over Denver, and with 10 games left, the Nuggets would have to make up 4 games on the Mavs. If they lose, the Nuggets will be just one game back, they'll have the tiebreaker themselves, and they would only need to make up 1 game on the Mavs. Tonight is a three-game swing for both teams.

I agree, but I think Denver smells blood. IMHO, without Dirk Dallas is going to have a very hard time making the playoffs.

Any news on how long he will be out, or how he is responding to treatment?

Denver is a good home team and without Dirk, I don't think we have enough scorers to keep pace with them. I don't even expect it to be close. But that's why they play the games, who picked Charlotte to beat the Lakers last night?

I hope so, I really don't like any team to have star players injured, and Dirk is fun to watch.

Also, the sprain did not look that bad as far as twisting, but high ankle sprains are strange beasts.

I hope for the classy Mavs fans like you Fin that he is back soon.

It's pretty simple. Win and the Nuggets can't catch you, Dirk or no Dirk. Lose and it will be tough to hold them off without Dirk.

As for the game itself, it's looking like the Rockets game a few weeks ago. A streaking team comes gunning for a Dirkless Mavs, with a lot on the line for both teams. If the Mavs lay another egg like they did in that game stick a fork in them. If they show up ready to play, actually show a sense of urgency they might be able to steal this one. If they can show me a respectable effort tonight I can believe that they could still find a way to hang on to their spot, even with a loss.

I think the Mavs have a chance.
The reason is Denver is such a big unknown. Some games they decide to show up, some games they just suck badly. Even if Denver wins tonight, they might lose 3 in a row against the East after that.
That's why they are first round fodder. They just have no consistency at all.

Mavs are in some serious trouble. You would think even without Dirk they could compete giving there roster. The mental side is a huge question. The Kidd trade has not panned out and giving the last 2 years mental breakdowns I ask myself what will be any different tonight. This is a Playoff game. I do see the Nuggets smelling blood. They have been a disapointment themselves. Up until Dirk went down they were on the outside looking in. They can kick down the door tonight and find themselves in the West Tournament this year. And we all know that will be a free for all!

Didn't the Mavs trade this years number one to the Nets. If so the Nets must be laughing. They might get 2 lotto picks this year. Not sure though!

DaDakota

I think the number 1 is lotto protected, but they will be so low down in the lottery that getting an impact player is fairly rare.

No certainly not, but the Rockets did ok without Yao.....

Certainly Dirk going out is a huge reason, but even with him the Mavs have lost to every team above .500 since the Kidd trade and that is unreal.

The Mavs were AWESOME prior to the trade, now they are an Also-ran.

Considering there's like 6 games between the 1 and 8 seeds, and Dallas has had a rash of injuries starting with Devin going down in the Denver game two months ago, there's no shame in missing the playoffs in the West this year. There's the same gap between Boston and Detroit as there is between the entire playoff field in the West. It's not like they're some shit East team that is going to win 32 games and miss the playoffs.

No, the Mavs had stretches where they played great and stretches where they played awful. You must not have watched them on the final East Coast road trip that immediately preceded the trade where they sucked balls. They would've stood pat if they were playing as great as you said they were.

Just about every team faced that prospect if they lost their best player for even a couple of weeks. Rockets had a pretty soft schedule when Yao went out but he's not as important to them as T-Mac. It's been a game of musical chairs and it looks like Dallas lost out.

So how long will it take for the East to catch up to the West, talent-wise? This year's Western Conference is the toughest probably in the history of the NBA. And as Sean Elliott said a couple of weeks ago - a 50-win team missing the playoffs and getting a lottery pick does nothing to help the Eastern Conference!

If this disparity lasts a couple more seasons, do you think Stern will consider changing the playoff format?

DaDakota

They should have beaten the heat, and they had a bad matchup last year....but winning 67 games shows they are at least a competitor.

I mean they were on the short list, but now, they moved down the list....

Here is my list of championship contenders.

1. San Antonio
2. Boston
3. Detroit
4. Lakers
5. Suns

Not quite ready due to injuries or experience.

6. Houston
7. New Orleans
8. Cleveland
9. Utah
10. Orlando

Bottom Playoff teams no longer a threat

11. Denver
12. Dallas
13. Golden State
14. Any other Eastern conference team.

Denver will need to only make up one game on Dallas if they win tonight. It they lose, they have to make up four over ten games because of the tiebreaker. Dallas still has 3 against the Clippers and Sonics, so at a minimum, Denver would have to go 7-3. And Dallas still has home games against the Warriors (they'll be on the 2nd of a b2b), Utah (shitty road team, Dirk may be back), and NOLA (season finale, Hornets may not have anything to play for).

Stackhouse took one horrible shot that changed the momentum of the game. It got Denver on a 6-0 as it led to a fastbreak 3. You gotta be cautious on what shots you take. Dribbling the ball for 5 seconds and shooting is definitely not a smart play. Good thing Denver plays no defense. When Juwan Howard is dominating on offense, you know you are bad defensively. lol

if we get into the lottery, the 14th pick is the worst we could have. It could always be any better, but there's virtually zero chance of getting into the top ten.

good game Mavs. The team scared the crap out of me in the 1st half but the Nuggets FINALLY decided to play D in the 2nd half. They do that and its annoying coz they wait till they are down double digits lol

Melo and AI were beasting tonight. 31/9/7 for melo plus a couple of steals

Mavs score more in the 1st qtr than the entire 2nd half

Man, I knew from the start of the 3rd quarter that this shit was going to the Nuggets. The mavs lacked the energy and the passion to even freakin try. I was really happy with JKidd though..

I'm just saying there is no way the Mavs will ever get a top-three pick while Stern is the commish and Cuban is the owner. Doesn't matter if we finish with the worst record in the League. We'll have the fewest ping-pongs anyways this time.

Yes. Howard probably needs to have his minutes cut down in the first half. The whole team lacked energy in the second half. That is on Avery.

I wonder how many of those games Avery got a tech? I would guess six. Maybe more.

I was rooting for the mavs tonight. THis helped realize that they don't have ANYTHING!

Dirk was their MVP. Kidd can't do shit by himself. I mean Dallas as they are right now, would be a great team in the East. But this is the West Coast.

Ppl forget that Kidd all these years has been in the LEast. with no help he's a lottery team leader in the west.

Given that Dirk's supporting cast isn't that great, can we stop shitting on him so much for their playoff exits? Yeah, he went from 25 and 9 to 19 and 10 against the Warriors, but did you see ANYBODY on our team step up and knock down shots when he got double and triple teamed? Did you see Avery hold his own against Nellie?

Out of curiosity, what happened to JJ Barea? He looked awfully good at the beginning of the year, and I was of the apparently mistaken opinon that his development was a factor in the decision to move Harris. Has JJ become the Mavs' version of Beno? I guess AJ has fallen in love with NVE, I mean LUE.

JJ just isn't that good. He gets exposed anytime he plays more than 4-5 minutes at a time. When Devin got hurt, he played major minutes on that East Coast road trip and the Mavs offense struggled mightily with him getting major burn backing up Terry.

You know the funny thing is that I never realized that until the start of this season, mavs fans overrated their bench and we also overrated our coach. Then we criticized the only person who made this franchise even have a chance in the first place. I hope somehow Dirk ends up with Kobe or Lebron, I want him to get a ring so badly.

You're really comparing shit pie to turd soup. Lue can at least knock down a shot when he's wide open. I can't think of anything JJ Barea does with any level of competence.

Yeah I photoshopped it for the Spurs fans who were whining about not making the playoffs. I figured it'd make them feel better. Since the Spurs are undefeated with it it stays until the playoffs.

35pts in the 2nd half? Yep the Nuggets D sucks.

It only sucks when they choose not to play any at all. When they commit to playing D then they can smother teams easily. I just dont know why they wait until the 2nd half to start playing D

The Denver win was logical and deserved. Nuggets are much more talented than a Dirk-less Mavs team.

Mavs situation playoff wise is still quite fine. I expect them to lose at Warriors and to win at Clippers. The home game against Warriors will be the key game. Let's hope for Mavs that Dirk will be back for that game.
