Jeff McDonald: Barry works out, for good and bad

Brent Barry, still recovering from the calf muscle injury that had sidetracked his season even before his Feb. 20 "trade" to Seattle, stuck around after this morning's Spurs shootaround to work out.

Barry tested the calf during a fairly rigorous solo shooting session conducted under the watchful eyes of shooting coach Chip Engelland, athletic trainer Will Sevening and strength and conditioning coach Mike Brungardt.

For much of the 30-minute workout, Barry looked like he could play tonight against the Timberwolves, if need be. He buried jumper after jumper from nearly every spot on the arc, proof that there was nothing injured about his shooting stroke.

Before the session ended, however, we were reminded of just how far away Barry could be from returning to the lineup. The workout concluded early, after Barry appeared to tweak something in the calf.

Barry didn't seem to be in pain as he walked off the floor, but he did seem to be in discomfort, stretching and fiddling with his lower left leg. Whatever he did, it was unpleasant enough to cause Barry to call it a day and retire to the whirlpool.

It's tough to expect a 36-year-old to come back from two calf tears in one season. He might be able to come back in a limited capacity or he might not be able to come back at all this year. At the very most, he might be able to play a 8-10 minute role.

PerforatedNeckline
03-28-2008, 01:57 PM
it could be just a little strain or a pull from disuse, not an actual reaggravation of the tear.

He was looking alright when I saw him warming up in Orlando the other night.

Come back soon!!

Well, I'd say this is the time to call up Marcus Williams for insurance but the Spurs have lost him for good.

Clippers Sign Forward Marcus Williams; Waive Aaron Williams

The Los Angeles Clippers today signed free agent forward Marcus Williams from the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League for the remainder of the season and waived forward Aaron Williams. Marcus Williams is the 23rd Gatorade Call-up from the NBA Development League this season.

Selected in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, Marcus Williams appeared in seven preseason games with the Spurs and averaged 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds before being waived on Oct. 27 and joining the Toros. The former University of Arizona standout re-signed with the Spurs on Dec. 26 and played in one game before being waived on Dec. 29.

The Seattle, Washington native has been a leader for the Toros in the D-League this season, earning D-League Player of the Week honors for the week of March 10, 2008. In 36 games with the Toros, Williams averaged 19.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals in 34.9 minutes. Williams started 23 games and also shot 52 percent from the field.

For Barry, I thought it seems took longer then expected

It's nothing. He just wanted an excuse to jump in the whirlpool.

MoSpur

It could mean that he hasn't done a workout like that in a long time and may have just tweaked it a little. I doubt its anything serious.

So 2 months after his injury, Barry can't finish a shootaround. I have a hard time to see how he will be ready to help spurs during the playoffs.

I don't get what Spurs are doing with their 15th spot. A 5th swingman would be damn useful when Spurs need to go small. I find it really strange that Spurs haven't even tried some D-League players.

Anyway, good luck to Marcus Williams with Clippers. I'm disappointed that Spurs didn't signed him despite all his improvements. Clippers have signed the 33rd and 34th pick of last year draft. :spin

I don't know why but Sean Banks hasn't played D-fenders last game. Maybe he is injured or he has gone overseas.

ChumpDumper

I'd be ok with DerMarr since he can at least shoot at an NBA level. Banks is my first choice since he's 23 and showed a lot of improvement this season. Desmon Farmer is about the only other swingman left with immediate scoring potential, and he's pretty good at moving the ball too. Mike Hall has some NBA experience, decent SF size and defense, but his offense has been spotty this season.

The D-League pickings are getting slim; if there is any room under the tax threshold, the Spurs should do something now.

Bruno
03-28-2008, 03:43 PM
Dahnatay Jones and Bobby Jones could be interesting pickups.

I would take DerMarr

Seems like Bary won't be available for the playoffs.

ditto,ditto,ditto,ditto,ditto, this really sucks.

Now there's a lot more pressure on Michael, at least just to score, since he doesn't do the other things that Brent does.

I don't see any callup or end-of-bencher breaking into the playoff rotation.

If it hurts in a shoot-around, it will hurt more pushing off in a game, just like earlier in his comeback game.

It's funny how people think the Spurs can pull in somebody not playing in the NBA who will replace Brent in playoff rotation. Ain't gonna happen, what we got now is what Pop will use in the playoffs.

Whomever is brought in, if anybody, will get garbage minutes, and there aren't many of those in the playoffs, esp with WC so tight.

Brent is thinking about Chris Webber legacy while recuperating his recent injury..

Chris Webber might have retired, but his legacy lives on in Brent Barry.

Despite having rejoined the Spurs on Sunday after being traded to (and subsequently waived by) the SuperSonics, the veteran swingman appears to be in no hurry to play. In fact, it's becoming clearer by the day his goal is to play just enough during the regular season to get him warmed up for the playoffs -- a schedule Webber popularized the last two seasons.

"It's a complicated situation," Barry tried to explain. "It's complicated because I can't do so much that I strain anything in my calf, but I've got to get in shape, so I have to do enough."

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich certainly understands the situation. After all, Barry was reacquired for the playoffs, not for the regular season.ohhum(:rolleyes)

"We're going slowly, making sure he's available come playoff time," the coach admitted. "I'm not sure that means he plays in a week or two weeks."

I'm not sure, am I supposed to do this?.. :depressed
