First samikeyp, now Manny and Jekka?

When's the first GTG?

What part of Michigan are you moving to?

It will definitely be one hell of an adjustment, coming from Texas. But it's not a complete and absolute hell hole. I'm originally from Miami, and the weather was the biggest thing I had to get over ... but now, 17 years later, I love it, and don't miss the days of 90 degrees 90% humidity one bit.

One of my good friends spent a summer interning in Detroit a couple years ago - his car was stolen and he got to watch it in a high speed chase on TV. Unfortuntately, his insurance wouldn't total the car, so he's still driving it, and the punk ass chick that stole the car left her demo CD in the player. Of course, the CD sucked hardcore.

Needless to say, I am prepared to watch my ass there.

Largest snowflake

The largest snowflake in recorded history was reported at the University of Michigan, on the first snowfall of the year 2008, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The snowflake was reportedly 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick. The person who found the snow flake, MannyIsGod, fainted because it scared his tropical ass.

Dude, I grew up in Houston, the mosquitoes can't be any worse in Ann Arbor than they were in Houston. And BTW, there are retarded people everywhere - and I'll be spending most of my time at the university, versus now where I work with the general San Antonio public. It's a step up, believe me.

Ann Arbor is a nice area. Very different from the stereotypical images shown of Detroit over and over.

A2 is the typical College Town. Three things you'll immediately see is very high rent, limited parking, and alot of annoying one way streets.

I'm in a 2 bedroom apt about 10 minutes from downtown, paying $710 a month. And while it's a decent place ... it's nothing special. I'd like to move to a nicer place .... but I'm not willing to pay $900!! If you're looking for a decent one bedroom, you should figure anywhere from $600-$800.

Going East of A2 is Ypsilanti. Kind of run down, lower income area. Lower rent, but lower quality of everything aswell. It has it's good parts though, and many people will go that direction to find more reasonable rent.

You'll need to determine how close to campus you want to be I guess. If it was me, and if I didn't mind a 10-20 minute drive, I'd look into the area of Saline. It's outside of the Campus lifestyle, more of a mature community without the premiums of the high rent you find in A2. But that brings up the issue of getting around. Alot of students walk or take the city bus system ( quality mass transit. you can take the bus anywhere within and around the city) if they're in the general campus area. Parking can be a real bitch as there isn't much. A couple of decent parking structures, but spots go quickly.

Ann Arbor has a lot of nice restaurants. While I can't think of any Mexican restaurants, unless Taco Bell counts :), you'll find all sorts of other ethnic restaurants. People come into town for the eateries and it's a nice atmosphere. There's always activity in the area. Many of the restraunts are on the main strips have little outdoor covered areas that are very enjoyable in the evenings. Of course it also has it's share of typical college bars/clubs if that's your thing.

Get rid of a lot. Seriously. I'm a huge packrat and used my move as an excuse to rid of a lot of the shit I'd been holding onto for years; it was the best feeling in the world. I never think that a big move means you need to leave behind big pieces of furniture, unless it's crap you want to replace anyway, but be really selective in what you want to take with you.

And pack. A lot. Earlier than you think you need to. It's a pain in the ass part of moving that I put off way too long last summer and I ended up with serious packing burnout by the time the move started to really get close. Figure out what's least essential to you for the next few months and start getting boxes filled right away.

It's a record year for snowfall
by David Jesse | The Ann Arbor News
Saturday March 22, 2008, 4:59 PM

BY DAVID JESSE
The Ann Arbor News

It's just as you suspected - this has been the snowiest winter ever in the Ann Arbor area, or at least since 1880 when record-keeping started.

And it's not over yet.

That's because we're not even into April, a month that normally averages almost 2.5 inches of that pesky white stuff.

If this winter continues the way it's been going, we could be in store for more than that.

Consider this month.

Normally in March, we get about 8.3 inches of snow, said Dennis Kahlbaum, a University of Michigan weather observer. So far in March, with more than a week to go, we've seen 16.7 inches of fluffy precipitation.

A good chunk of that came Friday night and early Saturday morning.

The storm - a narrow band across southern Michigan - dropped 7.5 inches of snow in Ann Arbor, Kahlbaum said.

That was enough to send this winter into the record books and shove the 2004-05 winter aside.

In 2004-05, 83.9 inches of snow fell. This year, we're sitting at 85 inches. That's a lot of shoveling.

"It seems like I've shoveled a lot this year," said Tori Williamson, 49, who was in front of her Ypsilanti home Saturday. "I've always been fine with shoveling, but now I'm thinking about a snowblower for next winter."

Agreed. Detroit gets all the negative news, and people paint with the same brush over the surrounding areas, but it's so not true.

I love the A2 area. There's a life to it that you don't always have in other areas. There's always something going on, and something to do. A mostly affluent area. Obviously very liberal. The downtown area reminds me of a very mini version of Chicago or Toronto. Shopping and eating. Places to go. Free Concerts, Film festivals and outdoor movies in the summer. Very low crime, and it's mostly of the juvenile vandalism variety. It's really hard not to like the area.

Manny,

I can tell you that Spring, Summer and Fall up here are outstanding. Our first winter was not too bad, this winter was a unusually rough one but its really just a matter of common sense. Dress in layers and take a little extra time when you travel. The highways are pretty well taken care of snow-wise. They jump on that stuff pretty quick.

I would recommend the garage sale. It makes the move a hell of a lot easier.

And it sounds like you'll be doing the typical late August move in. Just keep in mid that everyone else is also moving in at that same time. Reserve your moving trucks early. Finalize your living arrangements early. Don't get caught up in the mess of campus move-in unprepared. It's hell from August 20th to about Sept 5th ...depending on the where the first day of class falls. Everyone is trying to get cable/internet/phone service installed at the exact same time. Same goes for any furniture/appliances deliveries you try to arrange.

Comcast is the only real cable provider here. Of course you have the DirectTv or Satellite options too....if the apartment complex allows it.

I also use Comcast for my internet vs other options.

Heat...something you probably don't worry about in Texas! Usually better off w/ Electric heat vs Gas as far as $$ goes. My winter electric bill usually goes to about $110-$130. $60-$80 the rest of the year....but I tend to be pretty bad about turning things off...so my bill may be a bit higher than it should.

Most places offer move-in specials. Water is usually paid for. Some even have free basic cable at times. Most places have on-site laundry. You can get washer/dryers in your apt ... but rent increase naturally. There is a decent amount of laundromats though if needed.

I have a bunch of friends that have done the big cross country moves for school, and they have all mentioned reserving things as early as humanly possible. I'd love to find an apartment with heat included for the first year (Manny might need it, haha).

I might end up selling a lot of my stuff - the program I'm going for doesn't usually take more than 2 years (depending on how many extra classes I'll have to take for my specialty).

Haven't decided on a specialization yet because the MLIS has only recently been recommended for a position as an art librarian (MFA in Art History used to be enough, but the field is just getting way too competitive), so there's still some debate as to the best way to go about picking a specialty. I'm still several years from having to choose, though, because I'm working on my BA now and will probably go for my MFA before the MLIS.

Nice. University of Michigan has a gifvkcingnormous campus. But it's pretty cool.

Regarding if you should sell your stuff or move it, it probably depends how long you guys plan to live there. If you are coming back in a few years, then I'd say either get some southside storage place to hook you up for some long-term rental or just take a U-haul up there. If you plan on staying there after finishing school, I'd probably just sell everything and start fresh up there.

Manny, you got that thin tropical blood. Your azz is going to die during the first winter. But if you survive that one, you should adjust after the first year.

Oh and you should open a Mexican restaurant. Even Taco Cabana quality is unheard of up there.

I would recommend searching for a dual degree program - I almost applied at Indiana because they had a combined MA in History and MLIS program where you could finish it all in 63 hours (saving like 17 hours or so) - U of Hawaii had the same deal (Manny is probably wishing that I had applied there).

Looks like Indiana's MLIS program does offer a dual degree with an MA in Art History and a specialization in art librarianship - http://www.slis.indiana.edu/degrees/joint/

Yeah, it is definitely spread out quite a bit.

For furniture, the major place up here is ArtVan Furniture. Mid range quality and price is their mainstay. But they also have some nice higher end stuff aswell as a 'clearance center' which caters to what I'd call 'starter' furniture. Basic and common apartment furniture. Group packages (5 piece living room set, etc.). Some ready to assemble type stuff also.

There is also an Ikea which recently moved in the are about 45 minutes away. It's probably the most popular place for students.

And I probably will end up doing the dual degree because it's so practical, especially in a program that's specifically aimed at my chosen career. There's a stubborn little piece of me that wants the MFA from Savannah College of Art & Design just because I love Savannah and I love their program(s), but I'm pretty sure that stubborn little piece of me will eventually wake up and realize that it's not worth staying in school until I'm 36 years old.

No problem, I'd be glad to know that someone else is benefiting from all of the time I put into researching this. Despite working at a library, no one there could really tell me about any of the programs outside of Texas (most of the librarians have their masters from UNT online), so when I wasn't stuck doing holdings edits I was looking at this stuff. The whole admissions process is a PITA, just a forewarning. No one told me how crazy it would be (despite contacting my profs for recommendations the second week of December and emailing them once or twice a week since then, two of my three recs were late getting in - so, make friends with the admissions coordinators because some of them will work with you on stuff like that that's out of your control).

Corcoran School recruited me after high school, and I really thought about going there for the experience, but realized that getting a BA in something slightly more practical first would be far more prudent. I hear Savannah is an awesome city, and remember that you can always go back and do classes there later if you want (or, alternatively, a lot of schools offer graduate certificate programs for people that already have their masters so they can further specialize - I don't know if Savannah offers this, but it might be worth looking at).

U of Long Island has a program with NYU where you can get the former's MLIS and the latter's MA or MFA - http://www.cwpost.liu.edu/cwis/cwp/cics/dual_masters.html

The admissions process is one that I'm somewhat anticipating. My father had trouble getting into his MLIS program several years ago, and that was while employed as a fairly high ranking librarian at UC Berkeley.

That program is one that I have actually looked at before, but is largely dependant on other factors when I'm ready to take that step -- as much as I love it, I don't think I could ever move to New York alone. It's just too easy for a shy girl to feel overwhelmed and isolated in a city that big.

Yeah, I feel bad for Manny listening to my frequent freakouts during applications - i.e., "HOLY CRAP WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG??!! IT'S JUST A RECOMMENDATION!" Yeah, professors lost my forms, turned stuff in late, sent me incoherent emails that made me fear for the credibility of my recs ... it was a scary time. One of my former profs had a "bad fall", and his doctor must have put him on some really fun pills, because I got some craaaazy shit from him.

That's part of the reason I decided on a state school after being away from any kind of class/academic life for ten years. The college application process is really difficult if you no longer have any kind of relationship or contact with professors. I've never had any problems getting accepted, thank goodness, but one of the schools I applied to made me jump through so many hoops to apply that I lost all interest in even going there.

I had that problem with UT - they were horrible throughout the whole process, and then after I jumped through all of their hoops I got a "no action taken" from them. Not a "no", not a "yes", basically means that their official decision is not to make a decision. They have made me even more happy about going to Michigan because Michigan's people have been awesome :)

Congrats, Jekka! That's absolutely wonderful news -- the University of Michigan is an exceptional school in just about every respect.

I've been to Ann Arbor twice and can't say that I know much about it other than that my friend, who is an Indiana grad and has chosen twice to make that fact known on gamedays at the Big House, got laughed at endlessly by those who were tailgating on some very nice fall Saturdays. It seems like a really cool place to be, though. I envy your opportunity to experience it!

It goes without saying that if you like football at all, you have to go to a game at Michigan Stadium at least once. It still stands as the best football-watching experience of my life.

Boo fucking hoo. You can't get a tiny studio in the ghetto out here for $800.

Congrats on the move. I live in Farmington Hills here. I came up here from SA for Engineering school (Kettering formerly GMI) and somehow got stuck with a job up here. I should be getting student season tickets for UM football so if you ever go to the games gimme a PM. Oh and you'll get tired of all the Pistons smack talk rather quick as well. Ace Deuce (Ann Arbor) is a really neat town, you will enjoy it. The Detroit Metro area is really neat and has plenty to do. Neat hangouts are AA, Novi, and Royal Oak. Canadia has a neat strip just across the border, but the flooding of 19-20 year olds (drinking age is 19 in Canadia) will probably ruin your experience. Detroit and a couple of the areas on the south metro side, are the rougher areas. Downtown Detroit is really neat and a baseball game mixed walk down the street to Greektown (try Pizza Papalis) is a neat experience. Good luck on your move and you'll get tired of the snow after your first year. Hopefully you've got a front wheel drive or 4wheel drive. It makes driving a bit easier in snow.

One of the things that we noticed when checking it out on maps was how close to a LOT of cities it was. Michigan, Toronto, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Detroit, Milwaukee to name a few. Considering we drive to other cities in Texas its amazing to be able to drive to so many different places like that and have it be a shorter trip than from here to Dallas.

Chicago is cool has a cool music scene and plenty of great restaurants.

You can see the Aurora in Upper Michigan as well...

And I like SA better than any of the big cities I saw there(mainly Grand Rapids and Lansing).

Good luck and I hope you two have a good time there.
Thanks! One of my Native American/American Studies profs lectured at Michigan for several years - we got a whole lot of teaching on that area, and it's definitely something I'll be looking into. My prof also suggested going to Hartwick Pines as it's one of the only preserved virgin pine forests in Michigan, like how it looked before the loggers got there.

I have a book on Ojibwe/Anishinaabe culture and casinos called Rez Road Follies that I'll make Manny read before we get up there.

I have never had good chickenfried steak outside of Texas. In fact I'd say the chicken fried steak I've eaten outside of Texas is some of the nastiest food I've ever had. You are right to be worried....tread carefully.
Problem solved - my friend is teaching me her recipe for chicken fried steak before I leave. Her boyfriend practically had a foodgasm just talking about it, so I trust that it's good.

don't be afraid of winter. Believe me, you have never felt more alive than walking outside at 7:30 in the morning when its 12 degrees, 30mph winds and you are scraping the sheet of ice off your car. You will grow to appreciate every second of Summer while you start on your way in a freezing car you desperately hope will warm up already.

Planning to take in some Raptors games, I see. :)

Cedar Point is by far the best amusement park in the US

I concur. :tu You guys have to check it out. There are so many places to see and things to do just like any other part of the US. Make sure you check out Niagra Falls and Canada if you get a chance. D.C. was only about 8-9 hours away too. You guys are going to love it. You'll see.

I've found half-way decent Mexican food restaurants in West Memphis, AR, and Bedford, VA. If you walk in and they have actual Mexicans working there, that's usually a good sign.

That......is a reasonable statement....and maybe it was just wishful thinking on my stomach's part.....but I know on streets no one likes to talk about about and places don't like to talk about....there are some fine little cocinitas that exist. My uncle used to own run called Mi Tierra in Hambler, Ohio of all places that served some fine home made Mexican dishes. Es verdad.

What did you think of the area while you were here?

You were pretty fortunate w/ the weather too. Yesterday and today were perhaps the 2 nicest days we've had all year.

The weather today was absolutely gorgeous (we didn't get here until about 1130, took the 640am flight out of Houston. So fun.) - I can't help but feel, however, that I came at a weird time seasons-wise. The snow is gone, but the green plants haven't come back yet ... so everything is freaking brown. I can imagine that it's gorgeous when it's either green/autumny/snowy ... I somehow managed to miss all the seasons. Ah well. Tomorrow is the day that I do my campus tour, and it's supposed to rain most of the morning, but go figure :lol

Thanks for the links, DLF! I can pay you in flattery and gratitude as my ass has to save money for school :depressed Which is why this shirt (http://www.cafepress.com/buy/drop+tuition+not+bombs/-/pv_design_prod/pg_1/p_storeid.177090427/pNo_177090427/id_22766132/opt_/fpt_/c_666/) should be free:
