Return to Original Buzz Up PrintDespite being 17 games over .500, the Denver Nuggets find themselves in danger of missing the playoffs in the loaded Western Conference. If they continue to play the way they have lately, however, they may be able to join what should be a formidable postseason field.

The Nuggets look to tie a season high with their sixth straight win as they hit the road to open a home-and-home series with the Phoenix Suns on Monday.

Denver (45-28) had been sitting in ninth place in the West behind Golden State since the end of February, but finally jumped past the Warriors on Saturday night. The Nuggets defeated Golden State 119-112 for their eighth straight home victory, moving them into the conference’s final playoff spot - for now.

“Every game is important from here on out,” said guard Allen Iverson, who had 14 points on just 4-of-20 shooting. “We understand even if we got this one, we’ve got to concentrate on getting the next one. We’re not satisfied.”

The Nuggets were a half-game up on Golden State and a half-game back of Dallas entering play Sunday. With all three teams boasting at least 44 wins, it seems likely the NBA will have a 50-win team left out of the playoffs for the first time.

Denver is the NBA’s third-highest scoring team at 109.7 points per game, but it’s been even more impressive offensively in its last 14 games. The Nuggets are averaging 120.0 points in that span, more than enough to overcome the 110.2 per game they’ve been allowing.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Denver’s offensive outburst is its balance. Beyond the team’s top scorers, Iverson and Carmelo Anthony, Kenyon Martin is averaging 17.5 points over his last eight games, while reserve J.R. Smith has given the Nuggets 15.5 per game in that stretch.

Iverson is averaging 33.3 points in his last four contests against Phoenix (49-24), while Anthony is averaging 30.3 in his last eight versus the Suns.

Denver is 30-7 at home and has won 18 of its last 20 there. The Nuggets are 15-21 on the road, but have won their last three away from the Pepsi Center, all during their current five-game winning streak.

The Suns are one of five West teams within two games of the conference’s top spot. They’re returning home after a four-game trip that saw them drop the first two - losses that followed a seven-game winning streak - then rebound with wins in Philadelphia and New Jersey.

Amare Stoudemire had 33 points and 15 rebounds - his fourth 30-plus point effort in his last five games - in a 110-104 victory over the Nets on Saturday.

“This was very important,” said Stoudemire, averaging 30.4 points in his last 10 games. “We are playing well, we are all jelling and showing great improvement.”

Stoudemire has been outstanding since Shaquille O’Neal joined the Suns last month, but O’Neal’s recent progress is perhaps the most encouraging sign for Phoenix as it battles the Los Angeles Lakers for the Pacific Division lead.

O’Neal, who initially struggled in the Suns’ up-tempo system, is averaging 16.6 points and 10.0 rebounds in his last five games.

“I’m just doing what’s asked of me,” O’Neal said. “Amare is the first option. This is a team were guys don’t worry about shots.”

O’Neal had 12 points and 18 rebounds in a 126-113 loss at Denver on March 5.

The teams have split two meetings this season, each winning at home. The Nuggets haven’t won in Phoenix in their last six visits.

So what do you guys think........Nuggets the sleeper team in the WC this year? I think they more than the Warriors or Mavs have the ability to upset any of the top #3 teams in the WC.Depends on the matchup. The Nuggets and George Karl over a 7-game series are not likely to keep their composure. The Spurs and Lakers should handle them relatively easily, but it will be really physical.

Nuggets against another emotional team like the Warriors or Suns would be high entertainment, but unlikely to happen.

Amuseddaysleeper

While the Nuggets won't be a pushover, I just don't think this team has the playoff push to get past round 1.

Suns' Hill out tonight

Paul Coro
The Arizona Republic
Mar. 31, 2008 05:44 PM

Suns forward Grant Hill will not play in tonight's home game against Denver and probably will not play Tuesday at Denver either.

Hill also missed Saturday's game because of a right groin strain that has been bothering him since he first sustained the injury in a March 19 game at Seattle.

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni initially believed that Hill was going to be able to play after this morning's shootaround but he did not realize that the shootaround workout had Hill reconsidering how ready he felt for action.

Leandro Barbosa is expected to start in Hill's place again.

This is where Duh'Antoni pays for his asinine refusal to develop a bench rotation (>2 players).

Nugz putting a beating on the Suns. It's this kind of offensive brilliance that makes the Nugz a bad team to meet in the first round of the Playoffs.

I think Nugz vs Hornets in first round would be a Nugz win because they have starpower. CP3 is now a star but he's a newly minted star.

Denver :(. I can see why this team is never going to win anything in the playoffs. They simply lack the focus to execute a consistent gameplan for a full 48 minutes. Shaq goes out and instead of attacking the rim they launch jumpshots. George Karl makes zero substitutions and watches an 18pt lead evaporate to a 6pt lead.

I don't understand how George Karl is still taken seriously as a head coach in this league. He's had some very talented teams and has done zilch with them. This Nugget team has the best talent in their division and is a top 5 collection of talent in the league.

Nash should have; if you argue that he WAS the MVP the 2 years before (which I don't think he was) his numbers were better last year. Therefore he should have been the MVP if his numbers were better than his MVP years.

Unfortunately, just as there is great stigma in giving a freshman the Heisman, there is great stigma in giving 3-straight MVPs. Can you imagine Nash's name in the same breath with Chamberlain, Russell and Bird? Jordan, Moses, Kareem - never won 3 in a row. The only reason Barkley got the 93 MVP was so MJ wouldn't get 3 in a row, and Jordan got his 1st before he deserved it to break up Magic's run.

he's a statwhore,

you can get a lot of stats and rack up losses,

without Nash feeding him half the time, and Shaq keeping double teams off him, he'd just be fouling out on offensive fouls and playing half the minutes he does every game because his path towards an easy dunk won't be so convenient anymore without those two.
He'd average 6.5 fouls a game as 'the man' .

His talent is there; no question. His game is fun to watch when he throws it down,
but i remember in 2005, he had insane playoff numbers, but they ultimately were meaningless when the series was 4-1 in the end.

It's not Amare hate, it's just plain objectivity. Stats are nice when they're in route towards a team's success.

Gawdy stats en route towards individual accolades are nice for twelve year olds.

Fact is without Shaq, Amare's output was never enough to put the Suns over the top, since his lack of defense on the other end always negated whatever he made up for in 2 pointers.

An MVP's success should be the one influencing the other players of the team a la Duncan and Nash, not the other way around. Amare up to this point has been a one-to one and a half dimensional big man at best.

Amare played out of position for 4 years, and now he's finally playing his natural position and dominating every single defender. It's easy to pad your stats when no one can stop you.

Defensively, he's really not a huge liability anymore, unless he's facing guys like KG or Boozer, who at the same time can't guard Amare. He doesn't deserve to be MVP, or even in the Top 3, but he deserves consideration.

I'm biased against Kobe's MVP consideration, due to Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. Kobe's a SG who forgets he might NOT be another exception to the Big Man rule, ala Bynum.
The only reason Kobe is the favorite because of the media pull.
Because when you look at how they reverted back to 2007-2006 form, a Kobe led team is always going to be dependent on a good-to elite franchise level big man. And they have that now in the combination of Bynum and Pau Gasol.

Kobe by next year could even realize how dependent he is on Bynum and how he'll forever be Robin to Shaq, and now Bynum's Batman.

I personally, think CP should win it over Kobe who's 53 points can't contribute to a win against a Memphis team.

Yesterday, Kobe almost lost the game to the wizards trying to be the hero and missing two forced shots.

Interesting point, seeing as how badly LAL has been playing over the last few games. Yeah, they got the win against Washington, but it took them an OT on their home floor to pull it off. Also, the loss to Memphis must've stung.

I still think Kobe deserves it because he is playing at such a high level while playing with a system that requires virtually everyone on the court to touch the ball. Whereas Lebron is allowed to do whatever he wants with iso after iso, though his stats are awfully impressive this season.

However, if NO finishes with the #1 seed, I think Chris Paul will (obviously) get it.

I think Kobe may have been more deserving last year, because he started to make attempts to play within the system. But their record was too low.
But this year his team's bench is really deep. With the addition of Fisher's leadership, and young players coming into their own, (Sasha, Farmar) I've seen Kobe benefiting from his team's play.
But I'm biased against Kobe winning it this year, after his tirade and calling out Bynum. He's due for an MVP anyway, so he'll have to win it sometime.

Stoudamire should dominate offensively, and get to the line a lot with Shaq. But if Stoudamire wants to compete with the KG's and TD's, then he can't really use that out of position card to excuse his defense altogether.

I don't know if either team outmatches the other, but if the Spurs meet the Suns in the playoffs it'll be a hell of a series.

TD's playing with the same center that Amare played with last year.

Can't believe you buy that excuse for Amare being a poor defender.
He hasn't developed like KG and TD because he isn't that smart!

Four years without a true center maybe an excuse for lack of defensive help as the "lone big", but not when you're not showing any signs of development with your own Defense. The dude's still racks up fouls rapidly, because he's so clueless on defense even with Shaq taking pressure off of him.

Newsflash: Amare had microfracture knee surgery. He'll never be the same player he was before. Player of the week is out of the question, let alone MVP.

Also, Suns have no interior presence, no rebounding, no D, and no ability to play a half-court game. That amounts to early playoff exit, just like the last 3 seasons.

Nash is the clear-cut MVP of the Suns. Without his taking the team on his back and nailing 8 of 12 threes (8 of 12!?) this is a Nugget spanking. Kinda weird to see the crowd chanting MVP for Amare. It's premature. Next year maybe, but Nash is still boss. He said the following:

"It's great [the MVP chants for Stoudemire at US Airways Center]," said the Gordon Head-raised Nash, without a hint of envy or jealousy, and in the demeanour which has become his hallmark.

"I was excited to hear those MVP cheers for Amare. They are well deserved. It's a tribute to his team play, maturity and unselfishness. The fans are supporting Amare's progress."

Um, ok, but there's a limit to Canadian politeness. How do the Suns do without Nash? Not. Very. Well. In fact I'd venture they wouldn't even be in the playoff picture. Conversely, without Amare they wouldn't have a shot at the title. So it's sort of symbiotic. It's interesting to compare Marion's stats pre and post Nash. Pg % is remarkable.

So we see why Nuggs DESERVE 8th seed, or maybe 9th seed.

Once again you are showing you ignorance. KT and Amare were rarely on the court at the same time, most of the time KT was used as a back up for Amare.
