i picked 5 out of the top 6, including brown, rose and bowen. i left barry out because he hasn't had the chance to show us anything in the playoffs yet. he can have rose's spot on the BZ clutch team if he comes through this year.... :smokin

Did anyone read the thread I started about Parker's tendency to "blitz" people at the front end of games....

The fact that he isn't clutch in the 4th, is that Pop wants Duncan or Manu to take over 4th periods... he wants Parker to be a pure point guard and to think "pass-first"....

bigzak25
01-14-2005, 11:10 AM
i read your thread....and i don't know if that's Pop's way of keeping both happy or what, but whatever works....i want Tony thinking attack the rim and run at all times though.

That's what I'm thinking....

But maybe the game plan wears Tony out.... he sprints the entire first half... runs throughout the third and finally has to slowdown the tempo in the 4th period....

There have been some close games and in those games, Manu does share a lot of the ball handling duties in crunch time.

On the other hand...there have been quite a few blowouts (NBA-best point differential) and most of TP's minutes this season are front-loaded in the first 10 minutes of the 1st and 3rd quarters.

It is true that the Spurs grind out more of the close ones in the 4th.

boutons
01-14-2005, 11:37 AM
I agree that how Tony's game is going to shape up is pretty much decided in the first quarter, not in the second half. A Chauncy Billups can be invisible for 3 qtrs, then take over and win the game in 4th. That's not Tony's game.

Since the Spurs win/lose almost always and almost entirely on how Tony performs (just like in the previous 2 seasons and playoffs), I watch Tony extremely closely in first quarters as to see which color flag I raise. If Tony's got that cold-blooded, killer face and has the energy to probe the defense relentlessly for drives, Green Flag, Surfs Up, Le'ts Party.

But if he settles for passing to Tim and for jump shots, no/few drives, I know it's going to be a long night.

@PHX was a classic example. Don't be fooled that his jump shot falling pretty well and and his total points. He was weak at leading half-court offense, Spurs got not a fucking single FB point!, and Tony spent much of the night dawdling the ball across mid-court into a pretty testy Jazz half-court defense, looking like "Oh fuck me, now what do I do? This is really boring and tiring. Here, Tim, you try to do something". Spurs lose.

So my observations on Tony would agree with any stats they showed Tony to be weak in crunch-time numbers. I really think he's a mostly 1st half performer, or at least, he sets the tone in the first half.

first of all: dude made this form, so it's not worth any discussion
secondly: this team has won by 11pts differential, most that time in the 4th it is brown and Udrih who are in there
third: u guyz will always find something that tony isn't doing, I mean WTF

okay SAS, TP is the greatest thing since sliced bread and the only reason the spurs are as good as they are!!! TP's wide open clutch shots vs the lakers in games 3-6 last year were really what cemented his clutch status for me.....

when he does, what he does well, run and penetrate, play solid D.....he is the 3rd best player on the team. nothing more. nothing less.

"If tp is not good because of his 4th quarter numbers"

That's not what is being claimed. TP is good and his non/play is decisive in almost every Spurs victory, and loss, but his clutch-time numbers could be a lot better. When Tony plays really well, there isn't a clutch time. It's a garbage time in a Spurs victory.

FT Shooting tactical substitution. Tony's been struggling a bit at the line lately. Beno shoots almost 80%. After FTs, Parker went back in for defense.

I saw in person tp against suns last year make the game winning shot
tp is the point guard. he has hit other game winning shots to
he is suppose to setup up his teamates for the shot
this team has manu, duncan barry and horry.
these guys are proven that they can hit late shots in 4 for the win.
would you rather have him shoot it or give it to one of them? it is like if he shoots and misses he is greedy and should have setup his teamate. if he sets up his teamate he is not clutch.

Many are always touting TP as one of the top five PG. Well, he'll have to prove he can do things like manage the team to victory in close ones--and he'll have to contribute with some clutch shooting. Kidd can do that. Iverson can do that--although he's more of a shooter.

TP is good. But probably not as good as we'd like to think. Same is true for everyone on the team but Duncan. We have a star--and a lot of very good, but not great, players. Just proves that the system works when you play good ball.

Tony has been carrying this team lately, taking up Duncan's load. Hopefully TD will be back to his clutch self soon.

Parker's clutch enough that Pop and TD going to Holt about giving TP the extra $2 million probably saved Holt about $20.
