Senator's Husband Admits Paying for Sex

NATASHA ROBINSON | April 2, 2008 04:47 PM EST |

TROY, Mich. — The husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow told police he paid a prostitute $150 for sex at a hotel, according to a police report.

Thomas Athans, 46, co-founder of the liberal TalkUSA Radio network, was stopped by police who were investigating prostitution at the hotel, according to a police report obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press under the state Freedom of Information Act.

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News first reported on the case.

Stabenow, D-Mich., said in a statement it was "very disturbing and serious. Obviously it's a deeply difficult and personal matter."

Athans said in a statement issued by his attorney that "no words can fully express how sorry I am. At the time this incident occurred, I took responsibility for my actions and fully cooperated with law enforcement."

"My family and I are dealing with this matter in a personal and private way," Athans said in the statement.

Troy police had set up a stakeout at the Residence Inn because of allegations of prostitution at a room in the motel, the police report said.

Officers said they saw Athans enter the room Feb. 26 and leave 15 minutes later, and they stopped him and informed him of the investigation.

He told the officers he had used the Internet to make a date with a prostitute and paid her $150 for oral sex at the motel, the report said.

Athans was cooperative and didn't ask for preferential treatment, said police Lt. Gerry Scherlinck.

Police did not file any charges against him stemming from the prostitution investigation.

Stabenow and Athans married in 2003. He started TalkUSA Radio in 2006 after leading programming at Air America, the liberal network that declared bankruptcy that year.

Police said they arrested Alycia Martin, 20, of Westland in the hotel room on a charge of prostitution. She was arraigned March 12 and freed on $100 bail pending a hearing on April 22. There is no telephone listing for her in Westland and she did not have an attorney of record to speak for her Wednesday.

I too have wondered why in a non-theocratic state such as the US that prostitution is not legal, and regulated. I don't condone it, but I don't think there is anything illegal about it, as long as proper precautions are taken to prevent conception. If it is regulated, the women won't have to worry about being pimped without a place to go, and the customer will have to worry less about repercussions from things like STDs. It also turns a resource hog part of a police's job and shifts it to more important things, and actually adds a taxed income to the state.

I was listening on the radio to the local sports personality Mike Valenti, and I agree with him on many of the points that he was making as well.

Her husband was not charged or arrested, but given a ticket for driving while suspended! What was it suspended for I wonder?

Oh.. He paid $150 for oral sex. Guess his 57 year old waife wasn't willing. Oh... the police report (http://media.freep.com/pdf/0402athans.pdf) is dated 2/26/08.

She said she's a dancer at Bogart's and The Coliseum Gentleman's Club before she was arrested.

I agree to a point. If he was single, that's fine. When someone has a wife, and especially children, I can no longer consider it a victimless crime.

I am not going the victimless crime route here (as I did with the Chris Webber perjury trial). I think it is an awful thing, and you are right, those are victims. But it isn't a criminal act. That is a family issue, and perhaps could be dealt with in civil court.

For $150? It was worth it, compared to what he's got at home.
