they are basically a Pixies cover band that sold out. Kurt was a good talent, but they are very overrated. I'd put Pixies on this list before Nirvana

actually, I was going to put them on because they have sold more albums than any of the bands on the list I made....but then I was like, I might hate America if they win this poll- so I left them off

The Beach Boys were taken into consideration, but they were left off b/c I consider them a pop band, along with Elvis who was also left off.

why? I tend to think that everyone that thinks Nirvana is brilliant is a fucking retard. Why? because they didn't start shit. If anyone, Mudhoney and Pixies started grunge. Nirvana just became the posterboys because they got snagged by a big label. Then when they sold out (right after Nevermind), they wanted to draw eyes away from that fire by lashing out at Pearl Jam calling them sellouts and trying to get their fan base to turn on them. But actually the reverse happened. Pearl Jam went on to outsell Nirvana with followup albums. Pearl Jam stayed true to themselves by not making music videos for every song (Nirvana). Pearl Jam is still around making good music today.

So let's recap: Nirvana didn't start grunge- the suits brainwashed everyone into thinking that. They sold out to MTV then tried to divert the attention. Pearl Jam's Vs. sold more than 800k more albums it's first month than Nirvana's In Utero, showing truth that people now preferred Pearl Jam to Nirvana. They would have been a band to just fade off into a decent, but normal career in the business but would become less and less relevant and would definitely not be around today. The started with a flash, and ended with a bang, and all people have to judge of their music is about 3 years of work. (which alone shouldn't include them in this argument)

I agree I think Nirvana was over-rated. Anyone that plays guitar knows their riffs were pretty simple and plain. There wasn't anything complex about their style. This thread is however totally opinionated though, I mean come on someone said Dream Theater and Pantera. Even though I like Pantera I dont think they are anywhere NEAR the Best American Rock Band.

I agree about Pearl Jam as well. When I used to work at a music store I always laughed at people who would talk about Pearl Jam like they only made one record when at that time they had 5 records out. Ten was what they broke out with and Jeremy, Alive, Even Flow, and Black were the only songs that were popular with non fans. I would say that Ten is their 4 best album IMO.

yeah good point. It's not like I don't own Nirvana albums, because I do and I enjoy them- I just don't consider them the BEST.

I forgot Jimi Hendrix (well not really, i considered him a solo artist when I was considering Dylan aswell) but if Bruce Springsteen is on there then I guess he counts. I also left off because I didn't have room, Bon Jovi and Grateful Dead

I wasn't arguing that Pearl Jam was better than Springsteen, I was just pointing out that it's not absurd that Pearl Jam has as many votes. If you want me to argue that Pearl Jam is better than Springsteen I will. Springsteen has a bunch of baloney songs that became hits because they are easy to listen to. Listen to all of Born in the USA; it's basically a John Couger Mellencamp album about the state of New Jersey. Born to Run- arguably his greatest hit, is about leaving work. Basically all of his songs are written about the same thing. So yes, I personally think Pearl Jam is better, as do I think just about any other band on the list is better than Springsteen- that is why he is right above 'other'. His music serves as the soundtrack to background,top-40 pop rock with no substance. It's lyrically country and it's no surprise that he keeps doing sucessful tours because America as a whole likes shitty music- it's the reason Celine Dion, Nickelback and Bon Jovi sell out across the US. So yes, I would argue that all day long because it's my opinion, but I wasn't arguing by making that point about Pearl Jam.

If you really want to read about how Springsteen sucks read Klosterman's Killing Yourself to Live and Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs; in the latter he explains how it is a crock of shit that Bruce is bigger than Billy Joel, and the only reason that is, is because America has more dumb people than smart people.

Not if your looking for the perfect song after you are leaving a Blue collar job in New Jersey

In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway american dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the line
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
Its a death trap, its a suicide rap
We gotta get out while were young
`cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs round these velvet rims
And strap your hands across my engines
Together we could break this trap
Well run till we drop, baby well never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
`cause baby Im just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild, girl I want to know if love is real

Beyond the palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss

The highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybodys out on the run tonight but theres no place left to hide
Together wendy well live with the sadness
Ill love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I dont know when were gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go and well walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us baby we were born to run

or you can see the brilliant lyrics to Born in the USA

I haven't liked too much of their stuff since "Californication," but the poll's lack of Red Hot Chili Peppers seems like a pretty glaring omission.

Also, who credits Nirvana with starting grunge? They're pretty universally seen as the band that really brought a lot of attention to the genre, which they did, but it had been going on for quite a while before Nirvana came out.

the people that argue that Nirvana is a 'great' band often try to use 'Nirvana started grunge' as their main argument. So I was being pro active defeating that argument if a hardcore Nirvana fan were to show up.

the people that argue that Nirvana is a 'great' band often try to use 'Nirvana started grunge' as their main argument. So I was being pro active defeating that argument if a hardcore Nirvana fan were to show up.
Interesting. I've never heard that argument before, though I've also never argued with anyone over Nirvana's greatness before. I have always found their connection to grunge to be a bit dubious, anyway, as they don't sound at all like any other grunge band. Nirvana is really more of a punk band than anything else, they just so happened to be from the Seattle area and fronted by a really unhappy guy.

And I would definitely put them pretty high on my list, for the record, but not at the top. They're right with other bands like The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Queens of the Stone Age, and X -- amongst my personal favorites, but I'd never be delusional enough to call them the greatest of all time.

Its really hard to say any band is the greatest of all time. Like I said before its all in the eye of the beholder.

I like both Springsteen and Pearl Jam.

But, to qualify Sprngsteen's music as lyrically country and all about leaving work and New Jersey because someone told you that's what it's about . . . it's just insane.

The Boss has written some of the most politically charged songs around.

his place is way under bob dylan as a songwriter.

Bob Dylan is one of the greatest song writers ever.

That can not be denied.

Neil Young's voice is a little better than Dylan's. :lol I wouldn't mind hearing Jakob Dylan sing some of the old man's songs. I love the Wallflowers, that's how Bob's voice should be.

For me, no such band exists 'cause there are too many that really stand out for me. It just depends on your taste.
I like both Neil Young and The Boss but I wouldn't necessarily put one above the other because I like them both.
And besides, for me, none of the newer bands can hold a candle to the classic rock bands of my time.

Hard to pick just one, but ...

Beach Boys
Eagles
Doors
CCR
REM -- nobody mentioned them but I absolutely love them. Two of my favorite songs of all time are "Radio Free Europe" and "Fall on Me"

well, the only thing springsteen has on young is that young is canadian and doesn't count in this thread. or maybe you're just from new jersey.

Neil Young is Canadian; he shouldn't even be discussed in this, otherwise we can just compare all of these bands above to the Stones and Beatles in which they would be better than every one of them.

Since they've sobered up, their musical output is absolute shit.

Dude, The Boss has been at it muuuuuuuuuuch longer than Pearl Jam.

And, he and his band are touring as we speak.

The Boss >>>>>>>>>>>> Pearl Jam

The reason "The Boss" has been at it much longer is because he is like 15 years older than anyon in Pearl Jam. Just because he has been around longer doesn't make him better. Pearl Jam will have more records sold and more concert tickets sold than "The Boss" after he is dead in like 3 years.

As far greatness of song lyrics and musical content, I say Pearl Jam will forever be a greater musical band than Bruce Springsteen and the dude from the Conan O'Brien show. In the long run, they will pale in comparison.
