Imagine how much better the Lakers will be when Bynum gets back. You see that passing between Kobe, Pau, and Odom. Now add BYNUM into the mix, it's going to be a nightmare for teams that try and double team Kobe.

Yeah, but this is like the fifth time they've gotten a tech in a close game. San Antonio, first Laker game, Denver, now the Lakers again. Why can't they get it through their skulls? Points are precious in a game like this. Mavs didn't shoot that great from the FT line either.

In crunchtime, Mavs are so predictable. Dirk ISO, Howard/Terry/Stackhouse outside shot. They need Kidd to penetrate like Harris used to do. Kidd needs to look for his shot more IMO.
Also Mavs defense in the 4th sucked, they deserved to lose when you're giving up easy layups to Gasol and Odom.

The Mavs still have no answer for Kobe when he has the ball at the top of the key. You throw a hard double at him and Gasol and Odom rip you to shreds, especially if its DAMPIER that is coming to help. You go man defense on Kobe and he gets to the rim everytime.

I've seen the games. Your interior D is the worse I recall from a Mavs team since Avery took control of the team.
I looked at the stats and opponent turnovers are actually down. One of the real bizarre developments in looking at Kidd's impact and Harris' departure is that the "better floor general" Jason Kidd has hurt the offense, while the departure of the "best defensive point guard in the league" Devin Harris has helped our defense. In fact, the impact on the Mavs defense has been the single biggest change since the trade: The Mavs are giving up 1.7 fewer points per 100 possessions than they did before the trade. That's a very significant drop, and is nearly double the hit we took on the offensive side.
In terms of specifics, the Mavs have improved in practically every defensive category but turnovers: The opposition shoots worse, the Mavs allow fewer offensive rebounds, and are fouling less. The loss of Harris' taking charges certainly has had an impact on opponent turnovers, as the opposition commit over 2 fewer turnovers than they did before the trade.

Assuming Mavs go 3-4 the rest of the way (losing to all the good teams)--> the worst they could do.
The Warriors would have to go 6-1 to over take them if I'm correct. Who knows, Warriors might catch fire, but I think the Mavs need to go at least 4-3 to get the 8th spot (assuming Nuggets take care of their business, they have the easiest I think).

Coaching is not the problem....you need players that know how to execute and work well in the clutch.
Coaching is 60-70% of the problem.

Don't forget that since the trade your team played about half the games against sub .500 teams. That can skew your numbers quite a bit. I'd like to see what those numbers look like on the games against over .500 teams...

Damn leave Dirk alone! The guy is playing on a fucked up ankle and STILL scored 28 pts tonight and shot a ridiculous percentage from the field. He is not the reason the Mavs lost, it was their poor defense down the stretch and inability to stop the Gasol/Odom layup drill.
And Rocket fans need to STFU. DAL has an actual chance of making it out of the 1st round. The Rockets team leader is the epitome of Mr. Glass.

Dirk failed to deliver in the clutch... Not the first time, probably not the last time. He's a terrific player and had a great game today. But if you're the go to guy in the crunch, you need to either score, get to the line or find an open teammate... He did none of those. Compare with Kobe, that took it to the hole to put the game out of reach...

Fin I like your takes but the Mavs are not a better team than the Lakers. They may win a game here and there but with this current incarnation of both teams the Lakers are the better constructed team. Granted your team has arguably better chemistry and more proven vets but the talent and coaching of the Lakers put them ahead. There's really nothing to debate. Dallas played a great game, shot well, created turnovers and played decent D, as well as you can against the Lakers, but came up short.

Why do the mavs insist on Dirk always taking the shot in a tied or 1 to 2 point game? He never delivers.
He misses the fadeaway step-back in the lane, then he catches it on his hip trying to drive to the basket with about 20 seconds left... should've been double dribble but Lakers stole it anyway......
Then, KOBE DID DELIVER...took it straight to the basket to put the game away drawing a foul with 17.8 seconds left.
That's the difference between a go-to guy (Kobe) and a guy who always gets the ball and rarely if ever delivers a game-winner.
Dirk did play an awesome game. It's just that in the final seconds of games, he simply is not a clutch player that you can depend on.

How does Vujacic not get called for the constant reach-ins? That's all he does on defense
Reaching in is not a foul. Hitting someone is a foul. How are you ever going to steal the ball if you don't reach in? That's the dumbest thing fans say....."ref, he's reaching.." I wish once the ref could turn around and tell fans that reaching is not a foul. It's like over the back. Over the back is not a foul either, but if a player gets a rebound from behind, some fan will invariably yell "over the back". No one know the law of verticality rule in the stands.

There's no point blaming Josh, that phantom call on odom was fucking ridiculous. Its time to move on and try to win our next game simple as that
How come mav fans never talk about the steal by J.Kidd on the pass to Kobe when Kidd has both arms around Kobe's waist and then pulled him back to get an advantage going after the loose ball?
Now, that was a foul, but I bet mark cuban won't send that in to the league complaining about a missed call. No, it went his way, so he liked it.

I agree, but who on the Mavs will deliver? Terry? Please, he got his shit blocked twice in the 4th. Howard? The most unclutch player on the Mavs? Kidd the wonder shooter? That's the Mavs main problem right there- continued over-reliance on Dirk. Mavs are still mostly one-dimensional jumpshooters.

And no, I am NOT a Mavs fan, but I do know some top people in the organization....believe it or not, I don't care.
And if the organization was dumb enough to listen to a star player over what the GM should know is GOOD for the entire franchise than they deserve what they get.
You don't let a player make personel decisions, they may be good basketball players but that doesn't mean they know how to build a basketball team or to manage the egos and chemistry necessary.
Just look at Isaiah Thomas, or Kevin McHale, etc..etc...etc....there are some exceptions ...Joe Dumars...Jerry West, but there are far more failures of NBA players moving into exec positions and screwing it all up, because while they are great players, they are NOT great managers or builders....Michael Jordan anyone?

Ok, this is coming from a bona-fide Mavs hater. All this talk about Dirk being a choker is bullshit. The dude has hit so many game-winning shots it's ridiculous. Sure, he misses some, but everybody misses sometime, even the greatest.
People over-use the term "choking". It reminds me of kids on the playground calling each other names.
And the fact is, Dirk was playing on a bum ankle last night. You can say that doesn't matter, but you can also say the moon is made out of cheese.

They are trying to hold off GS and they have no chance to do that w/o him. I will take him at 70% and getting stripped everytime under the circumstances.
Or you run a pick and roll with Kidd instead of iso'ing Dirk on one ankle, but that's our idjit coach. If anybody choked last night, it was Josh throwing his headband.
Dog, I respect you as a poster, and value your opinions, though I still think Dirk should not have turned it over, I can see your point.

I don't want to feed the trolls, but I don't agree with your assessment of Dirk, Findog.
How many close games you had this year alone against good teams and he didn't deliver when it mattered? I still remember the game early in the season against us without Duncan, when he choked the last 3 pointer that would have given your team the win.
That you had to go back 2 years to lift a video where he delivered says a lot about Dirk the clutch shooter. I could go and get the Game 3 NBA Finals FT video and counter with that, but it doesn't matter. I watch the games, he's the go to guy in the crunch and I know 9 out of 10 times he won't get it done.

yeah, fucking right, you probably don't watch more than ten to fifteen Mavs games a year. Dirk delivers for his team plenty of times, and if you followed them as much as Mavs fans do, you'd know that. Anybody who is consistently counted on to always be the man is going to succeed AND fail plenty of times.
This is the biggest problem I have with the "choking:" Unless you win multiple titles and/or deliver EVERY SINGLE TIME, you get labeled a choker.

Tim Duncan can hit a sixteen foot jumper, but you don't want him doing that on a consistent basis. Dirk's post moves are mediocre at best, and he doesn't have the center of gravity to bowl people over. When he gets points in the paint, it's from drives facing the basket. The best thing to do is get him the ball on the wing and let him take a two-step pull up jumper before the defense is set. He is a 2 in a 4's body.
It would be nice if late in games Avery would put the ball in Kidd's hands and run a p'n'r instead of iso'ing Dirk and the defender can crowd him, thereby forcing him to drive where the defense can collapse on him. That's what happened last night on the strip by Odom.

The problem is for the PnR to truly work teams would have to honor Jason Kidd, and the fact of the matter is that both defenders would stick like glue to Dirk and let Kidd shoot a wide open shot.....you know why? Because he can't shoot.
I agree with your premise, but the players are faulty in your scenario.....
At least Harris could get to the rim in that scenario...Kidd can not....
Kidd is great in the open court in the half court, in the playoffs he is exposed, and if other players are not hitting jumpers.....then you are doomed.
Last night, Kidd did a very good job of getting wide open looks for both Terry and Howard and they could not knock them down.....
Kidd did ok, but in order for you guys to truly be a contender he has to be able to score the ball too....
Keep ducking and calling names Findog, that is what people who are getting Pwnded like you are...do....

I just think if Dirk developed his low post moves, he could more or less "quarterback" the offense like Tim does on occasion when he draws aggressive double-teams. This style of play would've helped against Golden State (last year). Also, he's such a good shooter, he could throw in a lot of baseline turnaround J's, like Rasheed does.

These last month or two your team had 10 or so important games against teams over .500, all close games, he couldn't deliver on any (except the GSW game).
How am I cherry picking? Who cares if he hits the winning shot against Milwaukee? Save that WCF game against the Spurs two years ago, you'll be hard pressed to find more Nowitzky big moments. He had a full series last year to show up and put away the GSW.
He was also hurt. Doesn't get any credit though for gutting it out since his team wasn't going anywhere without him.
He even had the incentive of being the MVP. He didn't get it done.
These last month or two your team had 10 or so important games against teams over .500, all close games, he couldn't deliver on any (except the GSW game).
They all went to the wire, and he sat out 3 of those games with injuries/suspensions.
How am I cherry picking? Who cares if he hits the winning shot against Milwaukee?
And who cares if he misses a shot against San Antonio in a regular season game, then? If you don't care about regular season shots, why reference one yourself?
Save that WCF game against the Spurs two years ago, you'll be hard pressed to find more Nowitzky big moments.
Torched the Suns for 50+ in the pivotal G5 of that series. Took the game over when the Suns took a seven point lead and looked like they were going to steal one in Dallas and take a 3-2 lead home to Phoenix. Matched Wade shot for shot in G5 of the Finals, including a tough runner over Shaq with 8 seconds left until Salvatore bailed Wade out. Put up 29 points and 15 boards, well over his season averages, in the final game of the Finals. Isn't that called raising your game?
But when it matters, he can't get it done.
When it matters, he's come through for his team and he's come up short. When you are your team's best player, you are going to be counted on, and you're going to succeed and fail. Dirk is no different. You're just cherrypicking his failures. When he hit that tough runner over Shaq to put the Mavs up, was that an example of him failing to come through for his team when Wade hit two free throws on the other end? Would you like it if I said Duncan choked and didn't come through for his team in the infamous .04 game because the Lakers pulled it out? Because it's the exact same scenario, Dirk made a tough shot and then the opposition scored on the other end. You can't put that one on Dirk.

You know who else won MVP and then got obliterated in the 2nd round of the WC playoffs a few years ago?

He doesn't get the credit because when he wanted to show up in those series, he did, like the game you won at home. But the Mavs needed Dirk to play like that every game, and he just flat out didn't do it. I mean, it's not like SJax is/was All NBA defensive 1st team or something.
They all went to the wire, and he sat out 3 of those games with injuries/suspensions.
1-8 the record without counting the games he missed. And yeah, the whole point is that they went to the wire. That's when the Mavs go to Dirk. The record speaks for itself.

I'm pointing out important games vs meaningless games. Any divisional/conference game the last 3 months or so have been huge, to the point that it carries serious consequences, like missing the playoffs entirely.

Now you're cherry picking. How about the FT he missed in game 3? Was that not pivotal? The Mavs had a sizeable lead in the Finals at that point.
The end result? 2nd place. He can't get it done. Maybe your team needed 35 and 20 boards from him to win the final game. Players like Kobe or Duncan are not shy of going well over their career averages in games like that. TD went for 21 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists and 8 blocks in the closeout game against the Nets. Then again, 9 out 10 times you can count on TD to deliver.

I'm not putting plays like that on him. That's all on Wade. He had the game's decision in his hands after Dirk's shot and he took care of business. What I'm pointing out is Dirk delivering when *HE* had to decide an important game in the last play.

A guy that won an NBA championship by then and went to win 3 more?

I know you are trying to get on Findog's good side, but this seriously fails.

Dirk would make a great complementary star player. Pair him up with a legit low post presence and DAL would have won at least two rings by now. A new PG was not what they needed, they needed an interior scorer to throw the ball into to get easy buckets when the jumpshots aren't falling.
The same criticism that gets heaped onto Dirk is the same criticism that Gasol faced in Memphis. The fact is both were on teams that didn't have the right makeup to win in the post season.

Dirk is not the type of guy who can just dominate games and takeover in the clutch time and again. But the whole "choker" label is completely overrated, if he was such a choker, the Mavs wouldnt be the good team that they are, they would be a .500 team, especially when you consider how no one else on that team can really deliver in crunchtime either. And their second option, howard, plays his best before halftime.
