SW would have gotten my vote...if they had stopped at 3 movies.

LotR was awesome, but check back with me after they make the Hobbit and possibly the Silmarillion. Those may drag down the LotR franchise the way the last 3 SW moves dragged down that franchise. Probably once a year on a shitty weather weekend if I'm broke, I'll break out the three Extended version DVDs and watch them in 720p on my upscaling DVD player piped into my 50 inch plasma.

If you are talking movies compared to movies the only real contest is LOTR and SW. I voted SW because I grew up with them. But the LOTR movies were fantastic as well as the books entrancing.

Now, I love the HP books, but the movies are just really pathetic.

The extended editions were actually 9 + hours and I enjoy it.

The Star Wars together are 12 hours and I enjoy those as well.

edit: Although the last 6 hours of SW are better than the first 6....

IMO the LOTR movies had WAAAAAY better acting (with the exceptions of the Sam and Frodo scenes... I swear, by the end of the movie I was "oh just fucking make out already and put us out of our missery." Brokeback Hobbits anyone?), not to mention they came from the fantasy masterpieces that are the Hobbit and The LOTR trilogy books. Star Wars was revolutionary in terms of special effects. When they came out nobody had EVER seen ANYTHING like it. It was incredible. Having said that, the acting I thought was pretty bad with only a few exceptions really.

I am a HUGE fan of the LOTR books and movies. I'm also a huge fan of the Star Wars story, which is unbelievable, considering the last three movies had some of the most excruciatingly bad acting I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing. I don't know what the hell happened to Lucas in the span between Episode 6 and Episode 1, but the dialogue couldn't get much cornier or the casting more atrocious. I mean this dude made excrement out of great actors.

I did. Friends and I do shit like that on weekends all the time. Hell, over a summer break one year, we marathoned all 6 SW, all 3 extended LOTR, all 5 Omen movies, the first seasons of G1 Transformers and Beast Wars, and the first and third seasons of Dragon Ball Z.
