Spurs-Trail Blazers Preview
By KATE HEDLIN
Associated Press Sports

On their first attempt at clinching one of the Western Conference's playoff spots, the San Antonio Spurs had one of their worst offensive games in franchise history.

The Spurs hope for a better performance in their second try Sunday when they look for their 13th straight win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

San Antonio (52-24) is trailing the conference-leading New Orleans Hornets by 1 1/2 games -- tying it with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Spurs had a chance on Friday to join New Orleans and Los Angeles, which have already clinched a playoff spot in the tightly packed West, but they instead had an eight-game winning streak snapped with a 90-64 loss to Utah.

The 64 points matched a franchise low for San Antonio, which shot 36.4 percent from the field and scored only nine points in the fourth quarter.

Tony Parker and Tim Duncan were the only Spurs to score in double figures with 17 and 15 points, respectively. The 64 points matched their output in a loss to Cleveland in March 1997.

"When it's good, I don't care about history. And when it's bad, I don't care either," said Manu Ginobili, who had eight points on 2-of-10 shooting.

The Spurs' starters sat for most of the fourth quarter after Utah had taken control.

San Antonio had averaged 102.5 points during the winning streak, which was preceded by a season-high four-game losing streak. With six regular season games remaining, the Spurs cannot afford a similar slide given how close the top six teams in the conference are.

San Antonio can at least end some worries by clinching its 11th straight playoff berth on Sunday. The Spurs have won both games against the Trail Blazers (38-38) this season -- each of which were at home.

It has won 12 straight over Portland and 18 of the last 19 meetings. The Spurs' only loss during that stretch was a 107-99 defeat at the Rose Garden on Jan. 24, 2005.

The Blazers are looking to snap a four-game losing streak. They are coming off a 95-86 loss to Houston on Thursday.

Portland shot just 39.8 percent from the field in the loss as LaMarcus Aldridge scored 23 points and Jarrett Jack added 19. Brandon Roy was out with a groin injury while Martell Webster missed the game after feeling dizzy and sick beforehand.

Webster, who is averaging 10.7 points in 75 games, was hospitalized Thursday and doctors diagnosed him with an irregular heartbeat. He will see the team's cardiologist next week.

Roy is day-to-day, but he's hoping to return on Sunday. He has missed the last four games and is averaging a team-high 19.3 points.

Although the Blazers have been eliminated from playoff contention, they are trying to finish with the team's first winning record since 2002-03.

"We're trying to build something here," Aldridge said.

Blazers are a very, very talented team with Roy in the lineup. Very, very athletic team but the deadly thing is they can actually shoot which is rare for an athletic young team.

The 2006-07 season marked only the third time – and second in a row – in 31 years that the Spurs had swept the season series with Portland … Spurs forward Ime Udoka was raised in Portland, attended Portland State University and played for the Blazers during the 2006-07 season … Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard was a scout for the Spurs from 2002-04 … Portland assistant coach Monty Williams worked as a coaching assistant for the Spurs during the 2004-05 season … the Blazers set a franchise record when they scored 49 points in the first quarter vs. the Spurs on 11/25/90 in Portland … the 49 points is also the highest single quarter total ever recorded by a Spurs opponent … the Blazers went on to win the game 117-103.

Winning record on the line against the Spurs

The Portland Trail Blazers (38-38) host the San Antonio Spurs (52-24) for the third and final time this season Sunday afternoon at the Rose Garden. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm Pacific.

The Trail Blazers, whose record hasn’t fallen below the .500 mark since December 14, will need to buck recent history if they are to finish the night, let alone the season, with a winning record.

The Blazers, losers of their last four games, have yet to beat the Spurs in their previous two meetings this season. Sunday’s game is the only time this season that Portland will host San Antonio.

San Antonio’s domination against Portland goes back further than the current season. The Blazers haven’t beaten the Spurs since January 24, 2005, a span that goes back 11 games. Joel Przybilla led the Blazers with 17 points and 16 rebounds in Portland’s last victory against San Antonio.

Nate McMillan has never beaten the Spurs as Portland’s head coach.

The last meeting between these two teams resulted in a 100-79 San Antonio victory back on December 2. Spurs guard Tony Parker led all scorers with 27 points while shooting 73 percent from the field. Tim Duncan played only 11 minutes in that game due to injury.

Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster both scored 17 in the loss. Brandon Roy had one of his worst games of the season, finishing with just four points, three rebounds and five assists.

Martell Webster will not be available for Sunday’s game after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat on Thursday. He is scheduled to undergo more tests on Monday. Prior to missing Thursday’s game against the Rockets, Webster had played in 165 consecutive games.

Brandon Roy, who has missed the last four games with a groin injury, is listed as day-to-day, but is expected to play on Sunday against the Spurs.
