Damn, late on this one tonight. :oops

Spurs up 15-8 on Houston early. Tim and Tony doing most the work so far. Massenburg beat Malik off the bench for the second straight game.

18-10 Spurs at the end of the first.

Season low for the Rockets for 1st quarter.

Extraordinary team D, first time in what seems like a long while. Rockets shooting .238

It also helps that TMac is playing like a pussy, leaving it to a gimpy Sura to do all the driving.

18-10

Revenge must be had. Hopefully the Spurs can win by 25+. Also that was an awesome defensive play at the end of the quarter.

Solid D

The Spurs are playing suffocating defense in the 1st. Really clogging the lane and contesting shots.

Pick and roll with Tim and Tony aren't working quite as well as Tony and Rasho (reason, Yao doesn't hedge as well as Howard does).

18-10 Don't expect only 10 points next quarter, though.

Rasho has free throws, he never gets free throws.

Tmac won't do the same thing this time.

I think Spurs holding them under under 70 if the defense continues like this.

Im in Houston, listening to Rockets announcers raving about Spurs defense--but note the Rockets are lucky to be so close--which means we aren't taking advantage of their poor scoring due to our defense..

Manu with 2 fouls, now but still in there. Really aggressive in driving to the hole.

Rasho is really defending Yao great.

You know, even though Rasho isn't scoring...he is really hustling and running in transition.

The Spurs are not able to get into the lane much now, as expected. They need to not pass up shots and take them in rhythm.

Solid D

Beno in now. Spurs finally get a rebound, Jon Barry wasn't quite set on Manu drive and he's red hot. Manu shoots FTs.

Let's see how well the Spurs close this half out, after McGrady and others have shot themselves back into a tie game 27-27.

Spurs suck. Shooting 30%, no attempt to push the ball. 5 FB pts.

What an abortion of a game.

HOU's excuse is that SA is playing good defense. What's SA's excuse?

Why can't the Spurs impose their game, rather than ALWAYS playing down to crap level of the opponent?

Spurs good FT of last few games tanks tonight, 67%.

Watch this game get a little better in 2nd half, but still close and then McGrady take over in the last 2 minutes.

Solid D
01-15-2005, 09:44 PM
You know what this game reminds me of? Last year in the first game in Houston, the Spurs led at halftime 30-25. Spurs ended up shooting only 32% but winning, 71-67.

This 30-28 lead by Houston at the half, isn't so strange now is it?

Well, it's not like it is a surprise the Rockets have too much length for the Spurs to get into the lane with regularity. They need to move the ball and reverse it more, plus run as much as possible. Van Gundy gave it right back to Pop in that 2nd quarter.

I think Grim feels he must outdo the collective negativity of the rest of the board, because I've never seen a positive word out of him.

In fact, I highly suspect he's a fan of the Lakers (or maybe the Mavs).

At any rate, anyone watching the Spurs the last five years shouldn't be shocked by this tonight. It's a repeat of the same shit as always happened against LA. Pop sucking on the tit of 4down while the rest of us watch the game go down the shitter.

Spurs sucked tonight. They did not deserve to win. They got 6 offensive rebounds, while Slow Man Mutombo got 6 all by himself. BS. Duncan misses 2 crucial FTs. They keep jacking up 3s, though no one can make them to save their lives. Terrible, terrible game. And it's worse, because after the last game against Houston, Spurs needed to come in here and dominate and show them the last game was a fluke. Now they've got the Rockets and the Sonics BOTH in their heads.

I agree with most of what you said. The only thing I disagree with is that the spurs can't hold a big lead. The spurs still have the largest margin of victory in the league. they are holding most leads WHEN THEY HAVE THEM. the spurs problem all year has prodimantly been in close games that come down to the wire.

Spurs are regressing, it's clear that they have hit some kind of wall, but that's to be expected. The big three, phoenix, Spurs, and seattle are falling back into the pack.

Tim Duncan does not look like Tim Duncan, maybe the summer is catching up to him, he just doesn't look good. I was thinking it was some kind of injury, but on further thought he could just be sucking right now.

Us Spurs fans are so spoiled one loss and we all but disown the team. Spurs fans guess what, the Spurs will lose games this year, yes believe it or not, it's a very long season and shit happens.

The clear path call was highly questionable, and if i was a coach and this prick makes that call and follows it up with a technical, he's sittin on the table Van Excel style. I don't know how pop does it.

Duncan was waiting too long for the double to come, moving into the double when it did come, and the guys he actually did pass to couldn't hit shit.

"supposed to do things like cut, move, and spot up"

But any dumbfuck Spurs fan (and every team in the NBA) can see that the other 4 Spurs don't do those things, so 4down, AS THE SPURS RUN IT, sucks. And when then Tim can't get the ball down low, like in 4 games vs LAL/May, they give it to him way out on the wing, called it "4 up"?, and then stand around watching him.

Tim holds the ball TOO DAMN LONG, he kills the possession, kills the offense. Everybody sees it, Sean Elliot bitches about it every game, Pop admits it.

This YET ANOTHER (road) loss, 6 or 7 at least, where Spurs give away the game to an inferior team that is playing crappy (incredibly, HOU actually shot worse FG% than that Spurs).

It would really be nice for a change if the Spurs and Top 4 opponent could both play solid games and the Spurs lose. At least one could say the Spurs played well and got beat instead of the Spurs playing like shit and getting beat by inferior teams playing like shit.

TDfan2007
01-15-2005, 11:54 PM
The Spurs are continuing to piss me off. Losing almost every close game to shitty teams (Memphis w/out Pau, Toronto w/ Vince on the bench, Kirelenko-less Jazz).

:pctoss

Tim continues to be passive and wait for the double team instead of going ahead and attacking his defender. When he catches the ball on the wing he should turn, face his defender, and bank it in. Instead he posts up and tries to draw the double. Tim is the only player on this team that doesn't have to rely on a screen or other sort of help from his teammates to get a shot off. HE NEEDS TO BE MORE FUCKING AGGRESSIVE.

Manu and Tony need to start looking for their teammates when they drive down the lane (Tim and Robert are often open for jumpers off the screen and roll).

Tim needs to be in the game more, every time he goes out of the game the spurs become pussies inside and get outscored. And as we all have learned painfully, every point counts.

Bottom line, SPURS NEED SOME GODDAMN INTENSITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Used in small doses, 4down is a great set and initiator. Used for entire quarters, halves, or even games, and it is the bane of the Spurs' existence.

The compounding problem with 4down is that it is predicated on other teams doubling. So basically the entire Spurs offense is now in a mode where it's waiting for the other team to initiate the offense instead of bringing the offense to the other team.

It sucks so bad because everyone's waiting. Tim waits entirely too long for doubles, then inevitably gets tangled in them when they do come. In the mean time, the rest of his teammates are waiting for the defense to do their thing before said teammates initiate their part of the offense.

So basically everyone's standing around waiting on offense. It's a whole mindset that breeds passivity, and leads to things like our wing players standing around and not cutting, because they are waiting to see what the defense is doing.

This would be a great offense to run on the football field where you get 35-45 seconds to line up and see what the other team's gonna do defensively, then adjust. Problem is Spurs only have a 24 second shot clock, and Tim doesn't usually get the ball in 4down until there's 12-14 seconds on the clock.

All a team has to do to defend it is dick around with some fake doubles (having one guy take a step or too, just enough to make Tim hesitate and make the perimeter guys wonder what they're really trying to do), and by the time Tim initiates any offense you're already in the bind of having to hurry a shot with the clock winding down.

It's a passive, reactionary offensive set, which all too often the last five years has resorted in the same passive, reactionary offense with the same initiator (Tim) but different complimentary pieces.

I guess I just figure that after five years of the same shit, more people would realize that we keep getting the same results with different players. It worked once, in '99. It worked to a lesser extent for our second title run, but took Tim Ducan smacking Pop upside the head and saying "play Steve Kerr."

We don't have a Kerr. Or a Dale Ellis. Or a Michael Redd, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Damon Jones, etc. The sooner we quit pretending we do, the better off we'll be.
