View Full Version : Movie Theaters in San Antonio...

Many of you may not know this but 7 new movie theaters are either under construction or planned for in San Antonio and all should be up and running by late 2005/early 2006. The except is the Santikos’ theater being built next to The Shops at La Cantera, which should be done in the fall.
5 on the North side, 1 on the far west side, and 1 on the South side. However, the eastside has yet to have one nor are there any planned. Neither in the inner Eastside nor the far east side in the Kirby or Converse area. I don't know many of you have been to the far east side of the city, but I have many friends on that side of town (Foster Road area) and I still don't understand why there is no movie theater in the east side. The nearest one is in Live Oak (Regal Live Oak) but that's at I-35 and 1604. Have any of you seen the growth in the East Central/China Grove area of town?
Why has the far east side not been built a theater? I can understand the inner east side a bit with the AMC Rivercenter but past 410, no theater... weird.

The North East does need a theatre in the Foster Road area or on FM 78 in Converse.
There is plenty of developement out in that area and that Super Wal-Mart has enough traffic too support a theatre.

Actually, The Galaxy...while not as flashy as it used to be and doesn't show quite as many shows, is much closer than Live Oak to the Foster Road area.
But one out that way, even a smaller one wouldn't be a bad idea.

Doesn't Judson High have like 7,000 students?
Reason why they're building that new high school.

Well I live in that shithole that you call Converse and love it. I don't usually go to the movies so movie theatres are not a major concern to me anyways.

Going to movies is so much better than watching at home. I just expect to spend $30 for us to go out to see a movie, I think I get my money's worth.....unlike the 300 bucks I wasted at the Cotton Bowl. :cuss
JoeChalupa

I disagree. I think watching movies at home is so much better.
I can pause it when I have to go, can control the volume and I always get the best seat in the house.
I don't have to pay $5 for popcorn or $5 for a beverage and if the urge arises, I can let one rip without even thinking about it.

Joe, I think you have an idea worth exploring. Open up a small theatre in the big Walmarts and charge a couple bucks to watch some animated feature so the parents can shop in peace. It might be worthwhile. Don't know who you would go to with that idea, but it might work.

Yeah. At The Rim.
Which is going to be a really big development with retail, office, hotels, housing, a mini riverwalk, etc.
When totally finished, it will have apartments, a mall, hotels, rowhouses, single homes, a open air lifestyle center like The Quarry anchored by Bass Pro, a town center, a restaurant row with Leon Creek turned into a mini Riverwalk and a this theater.
And then AMC is building a relatively small 12 screen theater just across from Santikos at The Shops.
Santikos will have theirs up by Thanksgiving, AMC won't have theirs up until early 2006.
I really like Santiko's theaters over the big chains.
He owns his own land that he builds on so he doesn't charge a arm and a foot on tickets and stuff. Also, no damn commericals during the previews!

I'm not sure anyone here will care about this, but I've made a new thread in the politics forum because of a conversation I had about these developments this evening.
It's interesting to note how laws were basicaly ignored during the development over the recharge zone and the only thing reported is how great the damn bass shop and new movie theater are going to be.
Right
Anyhow, it's political so I put it in the politics forum.

This just in: Add another movie theater. This time a Santikos along 281 and 1604. Where there is already the Regal Northwoods 14.
Along Loop 1604 and U.S. 281, on the northeast corner, Santikos Development is preparing for a 100-acre campus, called the Legacy. It will combine a theater, specialty and big-box stores, as well as office and residential units.

This now puts the number of theaters currently under construction or planned and to be completed within two years to 9 theaters.

Is our movie theatre to population ratio greater than any other city in America??
