What do you recommend as a must have?

I have:

3:10 to Yuma
No Country For Old Men
Apocalypto

I have seen (but wouldn't buy):

Gone Baby Gone
We Own the Night
Resident Evil: Apocalypse

I was thinking about getting 300 and The Departed on Blu-Ray. I am going back and forth with 300 since I already have it on dvd. Amazon.com has pretty good prices and shipping is free over 25 I think so if I order those 2 together it will be cheaper than in the store.

I thought 300 actually looked kind of shitty. I think it was so digital that blu-ray exposed it's flaws. I actually suggest you get BBC's Planet Earth. Right now amazon has it for like 50% at $47 so the whole series is only about $17 more than feature length film. That should be every blu-ray owners number one priority even if it cost like $200.00. By far the best thing I've purchased for mine. I'd also suggest I am Legend.

My problem with blu-ray is that I just gave up on DVD's, bought an Archos 605 (www.archos.com) (which kicks your ipod's ass BTW) and just started stealing AVI's. The prospect of actually paying for movies again is just fucking with my head. I look at those $30 price tags and knowing I could have it for free in AVI makes me not even buy them. Like I said though, planet earth was totally worth it.

Dude I will shit you not. I paid $500.00 for it and I think it's worth $1000. The best thing I ever bought. Stand alone- The battery holds up for 3-4 hours on videos about 12 for music. The thing is; it has a docking station that hooks up to your TV so you can play stuff on it, record from your TV or wirelessly stream stuff from your computer to your TV. It also has a fully functioning web browser so you can surf the web on your TV and play youtube/flash on your TV. The station charges it so if you use it in conjunction with said TV the battery never dies. Also has a touchscreen.

Also, it doesn't have software. It just hooks up to your computer as aUSB device. It records in AVI so after you record Jazz games it takes about 30 seconds to transfer them to your computer. Holds up to 160 Gigs. other models with less capacity available. Start saving then go buy one.

No matter what you do don't get an HD DVD player. I don't know if stores are being evil and selling them still, but the format's dead. Unless you meant HD DVD in reference to Blu-Ray, which I think you did.

On an unrelated note: I don't think Gone Baby Gone would be a movie that benefits from blu-ray, but I thought it was just an awesome flick.

Yessir, PS3's the one. Although I heard through the tech-blog grapevine that Microsoft is grudgingly accepting the idea of putting blu-ray in their x-box 360. It's just rumor, but I'd bet 360 is supporting blu-ray by the end of the year.

My problem with having a Blu-Ray (PS3) is that now I don't want to buy anything on plain ol' DVD anymore. Even if it's an old movie that I know Blu-Ray wouldn't help.

I bought mine in January of this year and the package I purchased came with Spiderman 3 in the box. I was told about the other 5 free movies when I bought the game system. I had to go to a website and print out a form and send it out for the others. It took 2 months for me to get those.

You need a 1080p HDTV to really experience the Blu-Ray to its highest potential.

I just bought a Samsung dual format HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player on eBay. It is a factory refurb, 90 day factory warranty, and was $359. I don't own any Blu-Ray discs yet. I'm filling in my collection with HD-DVDs and will buy new releases on Blu-Ray and stuff by the two studios that never released HD-DVDs. You can get both at places like CD Exchange or off eBay for reasonable prices.

BTW, I agree about Planet Earth. It's fucking amazing in HD.

Another thing I have found is that the quality of upscaling of regular DVDs varies wildly. Some stuff looks like it was mastered from a cell phone video theater bootleg (Spurs videos and anything Trek related), and some stuff actually upscales to 720p, which looks pretty damn good for regular DVD prices. The Matrix box set and the Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis series all upscale quite well.

Depends on the movie, but with Planet Earth for example I actually noticed a pretty big difference between the 1080i Discovery broadcast and my 1080p blu-ray. It's crazy that it could get better, but it's true.

I'll pass on watchmen. All I hear is that a blue Wang is swinging to and fro and I don't need better resolution for that.

How is that skynet edition? I have the normal edition. Is it worth it to get this one. I'm a big fan of this movie. Does it have both versions of the movie?

I really want to get this is it. How are the extras? More music performances or interviews?

Also, how did you get HD content in your ps3? Via wifi or USB flash drive? I ask cuz I tried downloading the matrix but it gets in a loop of sorts and downloads twice the data compared to the size of the actual file. It was an 8 gb movie. I have a ps3 slim. I don't know if there's a size limit for downloads. I'm thinking I may just need to get a bigger USB flash drive.

I'm not sure what's in the normal edition of T2 but you get quite a shitload of features like the theatrical and special edition cuts (15 mins more footage), 6.1 DTS, Picture-in-picture of behind the scenes video, text commentaries and multimedia galleries, Storyboard-script mode, interactive quizzes and games, commentary with cast, commentary with director, and a bunch of internet feature you can DL on your PS3 with BD-Live. You probably want that one if you're a big fan.

I watched This is It in theater, haven't had a chase to explore the BD in depth. The sound in my HT is great though, the video is great as well (except scenes that were originally shot in low-res). I can't speak about the extra cuz I haven't had a chance yet.

The PS3 only supports FAT32 file format (not NTFS), so the largest size of a file you can have is 4GB. I use mkv2vob to re-mux a MKV HD file into a VOB, split in 4GB files. I takes about 10 minutes to do.

I use a flash drive to transfer it over. An alternative (what a friend of mine does) is buy an external USB drive formatted FAT32 and just play your collection of converted HD movies from there.

I've lost track of this thread but I will say that a nice Blu-Ray rip is indistinguishable from a BD. I actually downloaded Watchmen days before getting the Ultimate Collection for dirt cheap, and I couldn't tell the difference between the two, even though I was comparing a 720p mkv rip to a 1080p BD. The Fight Club mkv downloaded OTOH looked like crap.

Planet Earth
Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut
Casino Royale
Kung Fu Panda
Dark Knight
Star Trek

My two favorite sequences right now are the Hong Kong IMAX footage from The Dark Knight and the first chase through the construction site in Casino Royale. Those crane jumps are just insane.

I don't own ANY Blurays because they are too expensive. I just rent from BB online for blurays and that's all I ever see movies in nowadays.

One thing that pisses me off about Bluray at BB is their selection. It's ONE little half a column of shelves. Really? In this day and age of high def and everyone jumping on the bandwagon... I have the selection of .01% of shelf space? GTFO

It depends entirely on each individual store's size and inventory. I work at the BB in Hickory Creek and we have 3 bays of Blu-Ray new releases on the wall, and then 3 aisles of Blu-Ray "favorites".

They also have a lot more online, but I'm assuming you already knew that.

Transformers 1 and 2 - the second one has got a few scense's shot in Imax (the scene where Prime is fighting 4 decepticons at once is amazing) but the first has the better extra fetures.

Gladiator - picture was not as good as my others but it comes with the extended version of the movie that had new scene's that filled some holes in the story

The Matrix - Impulse buy! The picture and audio good were up to standard, but the extra features had the same ones that came out with the original DVD ten years ago. Man bullet time has aged.

Wolverine - should have just saved my money and got the DVD. The picture was good but the movie overall was not that great and the extras were kind of weak.

Up - one of the best movies of the year and the picture looks amazing. The extras were good and you get a dvd copy along with the standard digital copy. A must have.

The Hangover - probably could have got it on DVD because the extras were the same and they were kind of weak anyway.

Terminator Salvation - One of my regrets. The picture was up to standard not amazing. Comes with alternate versions of the movie. The extras are nothing to cheer about.

Others that have pretty much the standard format with one disk and a little bit of bonus extras that I got for under $10

The Departed
Bagtman begins
I am Legend
The Last Samurai

Yeah, it's a great idea. They've actually been re-releasing several Blu-Rays w/ a DVD copy -- ones that had already come out months before.

The Breakfast Club'll be out Aug 3rd, along w/ Road to Perdition and Fargo.

Looks like Anchorman's coming to Blu August 31st. Consider me hard.

And then Se7en Sept. 14, followed by Beauty and the Beast, The Exorcist, and The Maltese Falcon Oct 3.

Saving Private Ryan (http://www.amazon.com/Saving-Private-Ryan-Sapphire-Blu-ray/dp/B003LL3N1I/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1286064098&sr=1-1) - just as awesome as I remember

Avatar (http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-DVD-Combo/dp/B002VPE1B6/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1286064173&sr=1-1) - the aspect ratio was surprising - no letterboxing and it really works; especially with it being a 2D presentation using the whole screen makes it more immersive. Especially in the flying scenes. Holy crap. But if you don't already have it wait for the Special Edition coming out in a month or two.

Baraka (http://www.amazon.com/Baraka-Blu-ray-Ron-Fricke/dp/B001CDLATE/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1286064281&sr=1-1) - easily the most amazing picture of any movie I have. They did an 8k digital transfer from a 70mm print. IMHO the 8k scan will become the new reference standard. It is just stunning. Definitely more of a meditation than a movie, but if you have a badass system and want to impress you friends (or just be impressed yourself) this is the movie to get. Would work great to put it on at a party where there are other things going on.

I got Daredevil on Blu Ray last night at Best Buy for 10 dollars. The movie looked pretty good. The special features were cool but kind of sucked since they weren't in HD. I know a lot of people love to hat on Ben Affleck but I think Daredevil is an underreated superhero movie. The Daredevil on Blu Ray was the director's cut and it adds a sub-plot to the movie that's not in the original version. It's also rated R.

Daredevil's fucking awful...HD or otherwise.

Beauty & the Beast looks aMAZing. You can actually choose between the Theatrical and Extended Edition releases, which is awesome, so you can actually avoid all the shitty extra songs Disney loves to ruin their "classics" with.

AND there's a preview of Dumbo, Bambi AND The Lion King (ALL on BluRay) in the "sneak peeks" section.

I just pre-ordered Grindhouse (which I should be getting this week), a new anniversary edition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Fantasia/Fantasia 2000.

The fact that Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 are being sold as a box set is some serious bullshit, for the record. The original Fantasia is one of my very favorite movies ever, one of the most beautiful examples of animation ever, and is as close to a "must own" BluRay (for me) I can think of. Words can't even express how much I resent having to dish out extra money so that I can have the pleasure of owning Fantasia 2000, which is such a shit pile I might as well turn that disc into a coaster the day I get it.

I've got to say, it's the most graphic stiff I have ever watched that I like. I don't care for bloody violence, but this is part of a what makes this more real.

Thanks a lot for the heads up. I have gone from having 0 blu-ray movies to now 15 for $60. I would have loved to pick up the LOTR Trilogy + Tropic Thunder, but the didn't have them unfortunately.

The first time they had this sale a month ago, the selection wasn't that great and they had another section of higher priced BR's that were solid. This time, many of those moved into the 5 for $20 deal which was cool.

The first trip I bought 5, but they weren't very good ones, but decent enough to want to watch for $4 each (I actually grabbed a SD movie just because I couldn't even stomach 5 of the blu-rays) so I grabbed: GI Joe, Race to Witch Mountain, Friday the 13th (remake), District 9 and In Bruges (SD).

This time I pulled all blu-rays: Nightmare on Elm Street (Remake), Hot Tub Time Machine, Predators (Remake), Kick-Ass, Robin Hood (Remake), How to Train Your Dragon, Zombieland, Sherlock Holmes, X-Men Origins & Expendables.

If anyone goes to their local BB and finds the LOTR Trilogy + Tropic Thunder and could pick that up, I would appreciate it for a ST friend.

Nah it's not far but i'm in LA though. And they only had 1 of each except for fellowship of the ring which they had about 2 copies of that one.

Ah, that's cool. For the stores that do have the .99 sale, is it blu-rays and are they the same ones that run in the 5 4 20 the days before?

No, they have a separate section for those. for example at my store they had 5 for 20 for blu's $9.99 and under. They also had blus that were 4.99 each and every day that goes by they would drop the price by $1. So by the time it got to the last day of the sale the blus had dropped to .99 cents. Hope that made sense.. :lol

Also alot of the blu's that were on sale for .99 cents last time were the same titles that were 5 for 20. Except they had a different price sticker on them.. Kinda confusing..i know.

DPG21920
07-01-2011, 06:20 PM
So they just took extra stock of the last deal and dropped them to .99 to get rid of them. With these titles, I doubt the do that since they seem to be newer and likely got rid of most of their excess last time.

I'm going to stop and ask any way. My BB only had a table of 5 4 20 BR's and then a section of like $14-$16 BR's. The only other deals were for SD dvd's (which were 5 for 20 and a section of .99).

There's a number of Blu's that're listed for less than 9.99 and they're the ones that are gonna be marked down to .99 on the 4th. Any of the ones you might've found in the 5/$20 sale were simply mismarked and unmoved (though, obviously, they'll still work in as part of the 5-for sale).

As far as I know, the .99 sale is still a go on the 4th.

DPG21920
07-02-2011, 03:16 PM
Fpoon, so you are saying the movies I listed aren't likely to be a part of the .99 blu-ray sale, correct?

That LOTR Trilogy is a damn steal for $4 each.

Fpoon, if you go to your blockbuster and they have the LOTR Trilogy and/or Tropic Thunder, if you'd get that for me I'll pay you back po'sho.

Fpoonsie
07-02-2011, 03:23 PM
Well, unfortunately, if they're stickered as 9.99 right now, it doesn't necessarily mean that's what their current price is. A lot of times, those tables and aisles have so many different titles that it becomes a little hard to keep up the constant price changes. I CAN tell you, definitively, that a large number of those on Pad's extensive list will NOT be going to .99 on Monday.

I should be able to track down a list of the ones that will be, and you can match up whichever titles you see at your stores with the ones in mine.

And I'll keep an eye out for the trilogy. You ARE talking about the original release, right? Not the recent Director's Cut?

DPG21920
07-02-2011, 04:39 PM
I'm just talking about the one you will find for the 5 for $20 sale, which ever ones those are. If you can find the complete trilogy on blu-ray + Tropic Thunder on that 5 for $20 table, you can just grab some other movie to complete the 5 for $20. Even if you can't find Tropic Thunder, but just the LOTR Trilogy, you can just maybe grab two others that are decent in your opinion that I didn't list above.

I just can't do it anymore. We've got drawers filled with Blu-Rays. Most of which have never been watched more than once. It's so easy to stream anything nowadays and I'm beyond caring much about the quality difference.

Yeah, I haven't felt the urge to stock up in a while now.

Been waiting for the Sopranos Box Set, though. The first and last season have been out for years on Blu. No idea what took the rest so long.

I think if I were to invest in Blu Ray's again, it'd be on a series like that. Waiting between seasons, I think I lost a lot. I'm envious of my friends who didn't watch Breaking Bad until they could watch the whole thing over a week or so. Shit, it was like a year between some of the season.

:lol Yes. That was the fucking worst.

Admittedly, I never caught The Sopranos during its heyday. Rented the first season one night on a whim, and the rest, history, etc.
