All of a sudden, Pop goes to Bonner as the #3 sub and Matt gets significant and productive minutes. Now, I haven't seen a lot of games this year (maybe around 20 or more) but I was very pleasantly suprised to see this. I was under the impression that Bonner was buried at the end of the end of the bench and would only get garbage minutes for basically the last 2/3rds of this season. Then, like it's a normal thing, Pop calls on Bonner to stretch the floor, grab a board and swing the ball, like Pop thought Bonner was Horry or something.

Maybe we witnessed a glimpse of some playoff strategy. Maybe.

Maybe I'm way off base.

Anyway -- props to Matt Bonner for bringing the energy and the sweet stoke after long time sitting. :toast

Props to Pop for bringing him in. :toast

i guess Robert Horrys injury is more severe than we thought. pop has probably moved on and allowed bonner to get comfortable in those minutes.

Just like I predicted.

Duncan is passing the torch to The Red Rocket and Bonner will carry this team to the finals.

Maybe we witnessed Pop resting the guys he really cares about. :)

Personally, I've never understood the avid criticism Bonner gets regularly on this board.

I mean, yeah, he's not that strong of a defender. Weak even. Sometimes his rotations are, uh, questionable. He just doesn't seem to be that physically strong for someone his size. Narrow shoulders, etc.

But still, everytime he's come into a game, he just hustles. Always trying to set picks, always trying for rebounds, always trying to do his best on D.

Always trying...always.

Couple that with his better than average shooting., and you have a pretty good bench player. Someone who can give you points on a team that really needs someone to, well... give them points.

Haven't seen anyone from the D league do any better. All the talk about trying to find a decent scorer this season. Well...

He's been there, at the end of the bench.

Reminds of the story from the 50's when legendary Abe Martin was the TCU football coach.

TCU's offensive line was getting destroyed by the opponents' defensive tackle, number 99. He was in their backfield causing havoc every play.

Martin walks up to a freshman offensive lineman on the bench.

"Son, stand up."

The kid gets up.

"That number 99 is just killin' Tommy."

"Yes sir he is."

"Now I want you to go in there for Tommy and stop that number 99."

The kid beams. "I'll sure try, coach."

"Son, sit back down," says Abe. "Tommy's trying."

So it goes with our Matt. :)
