Horry returns to practice for the Spurs

Spurs forward Robert Horry went through a full practice Friday for the first time since suffering a bruised knee four weeks ago against Sacramento.

The 16-year-veteran, nicknamed "Big Shot Rob" for his ability to make clutch baskets in the playoffs, took part in a five-on-five scrimmage on the eve of the Spurs' first-round series opener against the Phoenix Suns.

Because Horry sat out the final 13 games of the regular season, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he must be cautious with him.

"It's a tough role to put him out there after he didn't play so long,'' Popovich said. "But then you do think he's pretty experienced. He's been around about 43 years. It's probably like riding a bike to him, so I'm not sure.''

Horry suffered the injury on March 21 in a home game against Sacramento. He has played only 45 games this season, registering career-lows in field goal percentage (31.9) and points per game (2.5).

He's been around about 43 years.

:lmao

Good news about Horry. His experience and his defense will help, if he can hit a basket or two that will be nice too.

Welcome back. When the Spurs are about to lose a game against the Suns, Pop should put Horry into the game to commit a hard foul -- if for no other reason than to piss of Sun Fan.

:lol Hmm, I wonder how his knee will be tommorow. Good to hear he's back.

Doesn't this mean though that the Spurs have to take off someone from their roster? i.e Either Bonner or Stoudamire won't make the cut?

It wouldn't feel right if he didn't.

If they're going to call us dirty, we might as well start acting like it.

Spurs notebook: Horry goes through full practice

Express-News

For the first time since he banged knees with Sacramento's Francisco Garcia in a game on March 21, Spurs forward Robert Horry on Friday engaged in a full practice with his teammates.
The 16-year-veteran, whose ability to make baskets in the most critical of playoff situations has earned him the nickname "Big Shot Rob," even took part in a five-on-five scrimmage.

While Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was encouraged by what he saw from Horry, he faces a dilemma when it comes to getting him back in action. Not having had a chance to give him even a cursory look in the final games of the regular season, Popovich said he must be cautious about throwing Horry back into action in a playoff game.

"It's a tough role to put him out there after he didn't play so long," Popovich said. "But then you do think he's pretty experienced. He's been around about 43 years. It's probably like riding a bike to him, so I'm not sure."

Popovich had fretted about Horry's physical health in the final week of the regular season, but said it had improved steadily the past few days.

Spurs captain Tim Duncan, who has accused Horry of coasting through the previous three regular seasons before turning his game up for the playoffs, joked that Horry waited until Friday to show Popovich he was ready.

"He was ready for the last 10 games," Duncan said. "He just took them off. Now it's playoff time and he's ready to turn it up again."

Ginobili update: Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, the team's leading scorer in the regular season, said he had hoped to play more than the 19:04 minutes he got in Wednesday's regular- season finale against the Utah Jazz.

It was his first game after missing three with a strained muscle in his left groin.

"I feel good," Ginobili said after Friday's practice session. "I did not have an opportunity to get a rhythm since the injury. It's only been three games, so hopefully I didn't lose much. I wanted to play more that game, but he was concerned, too.

"Hopefully, I will be ready."

If a spirited shooting contest Ginobili waged with teammate Michael Finley was any indication, he is plenty ready. Shooting from different spots around the 3-point arc, Ginobili drained one 3-pointer after another, at one point making 11 in a row.

Tickets remain: Spurs officials reported that about 500 tickets remained unsold for today's Game 1, including some in the lower bowl. They range in price from $12 to $255, and can be purchased at all Ticketmaster Ticket Center locations, including select H-E-B and Macy's stores. They can also be charged by phone by calling (210) 225-TEAM. They can be charged online at ticketmaster.com, or spurs.com.

About 2,000 tickets are available for Tuesday's Game 2, scheduled to tip off at 8:30 p.m. at the AT&T Center, including a few hundred in the lower bowl.

Playoff rookie: Not counting rookie Ian Mahinmi, who won't be on the active list for today's game, backup forward Ime Udoka is the only Spurs player with no playoff experience. That may have explained why Udoka was still on the practice court Friday afternoon taking extra shots 30 minutes after the rest of his teammates had gone to the locker room.
