Suns will tag-team Spurs' Duncan
Jerry Brown, Tribune

A lot has been made about the Tim Duncan-Shaquille O’Neal matchup in this series but O’Neal won’t guard Duncan much in the first half. Amaré Stoudemire gets the initial assignment and Boris Diaw will take over midway through the first period when O’Neal takes a break and Stoudemire switches.

It puts Stoudemire in a tough spot early, but the Suns want O’Neal — who will play as much as 35 minutes a game, barring foul trouble — to be fresh with fouls to give when he takes Duncan down the stretch.

“I want to have all my bullets for the end,” O’Neal said.

He also gave Stoudemire some tips on guarding Duncan.

“They try to make Amaré play defense. So I’ll tell Amaré ‘Make Duncan play defense. When I was with the Lakers, he’d just turn around and shoot over our power forward. You have to make the shot tough, but even then he hits those sometimes.”

Stoudemire's problem against the Spurs is staying out of foul trouble. So D'Antoni starts him on Duncan?

Thank the basketball gods for D'Antoni.

Like I said, Duncan is going to average 2006 Mavs series numbers against the Suns. Duncan is built for the playoffs. He'll never win another regular season MVP because that's not when he puts up MVP numbers. The playoffs is. The Suns will put up a good fight but very few people understand how monumentally fucked they are in this series.

Starting Amare on Duncan just sealed it. Amare will be on the bench five minutes into the game.

We'll save some fouls for Shaq at the end, too. When someone shoots 60% from the field and 45% from the line, the choice really isn't one.

Shaq should start out on Duncan. After his first foul, than Amare guards Duncan. After his first foul, Diaw on Duncan until the start of the second quarter. If D'antoni chooses not to guard Duncan at all with Shaq in the first half, than he is an idiot.

Is that some typo or something? I've read Amare will guard Duncan.
