Eastern Conference
First round

No. 1 Celtics vs. No. 8 Hawks: Here's all you need to know about this series: Last Saturday, the Hawks had a chance to clinch a playoff spot against a Boston team that rested its regulars in the fourth quarter. The result: Atlanta was outscored 25-15 in the period and lost 99-89. The Hawks' first playoff appearance since 1999 will end quickly.
Prediction: Celtics in four games.

No. 2 Pistons vs. No. 7 Sixers: The 76ers are an upset waiting to happen -- if they had slipped into the sixth spot and faced the Magic instead. Stuck in seventh, Philadelphia bows out to a Detroit team that appears interested in playing only three months (April, May and June) a year.
Prediction: Pistons in six.

No. 3 Magic vs. No. 6 Raptors: Too much uncertainty in Orlando. Will Dwight Howard have enough left in the tank on offense after defending Chris Bosh? Hedo Turkoglu was the Magic's go-to guy in the regular season -- but is he good enough to play the same role in the playoffs? The Raptors' significant edge at point guard could be decisive.
Prediction: Raptors in seven.

No. 4 Cavaliers vs. No. 5 Wizards: On his NBA.com blog, Gilbert Arenas said the Wizards want Cleveland. Careful what you wish for. LeBron James has averaged 32.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.4 assists in 10 playoff games against Washington. Still, Washington has been champing at the bit for another shot at Cleveland, which has eliminated the Wizards in the first round the last two postseasons. The third time will be the charm.
Prediction: Wizards in seven.

Second round

Celtics vs. Wizards: A difficult matchup for Boston, which lost three of four games against the Wizards in the regular season. Boston's stifling defense, however, will eventually be too much for the Wizards' Big Three of Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison.
Prediction: Celtics in six.

Pistons vs. Raptors: Great matchups in this series. Rasheed Wallace vs. Chris Bosh. Chauncey Billups vs. Jose Calderon/T.J. Ford. Take the experience.
Prediction: Pistons in six.

Conference finals

Celtics vs. Pistons: The East series everyone has been waiting for lives up to the hype. The Pistons' laissez-faire attitude in the regular season finally comes back to haunt them as the hungry Celtics wipe them out in the deciding game.
Prediction: Celtics in seven.

Western Conference
First round

No. 1 Lakers vs. No. 8 Nuggets: One of the most flawed 50-game winners in NBA history, the potent-offense/no-defense Nuggets become the first (but not the last) of Kobe Bryant's 2008 playoff victims.
Prediction: Lakers in five.

No. 2 Hornets vs. No. 7 Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki's sore left ankle won't get any better as he'll be busy dealing with All-Star power forward David West. The Hornets' playoff-neophyte status will become an issue, but not in this series.
Prediction: Hornets in six.

No. 3 Spurs vs. No. 6 Suns: The Suns were one Robert Horry hip-check from potentially upending the Spurs in the second round last season. They will have their full complement this time around, but a healthy Spurs team with a playoff mastermind like Gregg Popovich on the bench will prove too tough to beat.
Prediction: Spurs in seven.

No. 4 Jazz vs. No. 5 Rockets: Consider the letdown factor: Houston has to view it as an accomplishment just to make the postseason without Yao Ming. Utah looks at it as a step toward a greater goal. The Jazz carry the league's best home record (37-4) into the playoffs, and with Rockets point guard Rafer Alston (strained hamstring) sidelined for at least the first two games (both in Houston), Utah should be able to take a game on the road.
Prediction: Jazz in six.

Second round

Lakers vs. Jazz: Will Andrew Bynum return for the second round? Perhaps, but even without the 7-footer the Lakers have too much firepower for the Jazz. A big series for Pau Gasol, who will match up frequently with the defenseless Mehmet Okur.
Prediction: Lakers in seven.

Hornets vs. Spurs: Is point guard the best positional matchup of the playoffs or what? Chris Paul will prove superior when he outduels Tony Parker, but the Spurs' experienced front line of Tim Duncan, Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas will overwhelm West and Tyson Chandler.
Prediction: Spurs in seven.

Conference finals

Lakers vs. Spurs: The over-under is 14 -- as in the number of times Bruce Bowen will whack Bryant on his injured pinkie finger in this series. A third consecutive marathon series will have aging San Antonio running on fumes, but Popovich's well-designed defense of Bryant will keep the Spurs in it. The key matchup: Duncan vs. Gasol.
Prediction: Spurs in seven.

NBA Finals

Celtics vs. Spurs: Too much Garnett. Too much Paul Pierce. Too much Ray Allen. Boston's Big Three has never been to a Finals, and those All-Star players won't shrink in the spotlight. Garnett neutralizes Duncan, Allen gets the best of longtime nemesis Bowen and Pierce outduels Manu Ginobili.
Prediction: Celtics in seven.

These have to be the worst analysis and predictions ever. So the spurs will play four consecutive 7 games series? And Garnett and Pierce are better than Tim and Manu?
I can't bealive this guy gets paid for doing this.

I want the Spurs to win just as bad, if not more, than everyone here - but don't you think it's going a little far to go off on a profanity-laced tirade aimed at every "expert" that picks one of the other 15 teams to win the Championship? He has us in the Finals for goodness sake - which is much, much further than most "experts" have us going.

The problem isn't that he selected another team to win it all, the problem are this thoughts:

So the spurs will play four consecutive 7 games series? And Garnett and Pierce are better than Tim and Manu?

I wouldn't said anything if he'd selected the Suns over the Spurs in the first round.

San Antonio Express-News

BOSTON CELTICS VS. ATLANTA HAWKS

Series: Celtics won 3-0

Last meeting: Celtics 99, Hawks 89 on April 12 in Atlanta

Key matchup: Paul Pierce vs. Joe Johnson. The Hawks have only one shot at pulling off the biggest upset in playoff history: Joe Johnson playing like Magic Johnson.

Celtics can win: If they take the Hawks seriously enough to avoid the biggest letdown in playoff history.

Hawks can win: If ... well, they can't. If Kevin Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen are stricken with mysterious diseases, the series might go seven games.

Prediction: Celtics in four

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DETROIT PISTONS VS. PHILADELPHIA 76ERS

AT A GLANCE

Series: Tied 2-2

Last meeting: 76ers 101, Pistons 94 on April 9 in Philadelphia

Key matchup: Chauncey Billups vs. Andre Miller. Billups is the best point guard in the Eastern Conference. Miller is nearly as good and will keep Billups busy at both ends.

Pistons can win: If Rasheed Wallace's 3-point stroke is on track and Tayshaun Prince can keep Andre Iguodala from getting untracked.

76ers can win: If Samuel Dalembert dominates the interior and gets enough defensive rebounds to get their fast break rolling.

Prediction: 76ers in seven

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ORLANDO MAGIC VS. TORONTO RAPTORS

Series: Magic won 2-1

Last meeting: Magic 102, Raptors 87 on March 4 in Orlando

Key matchup: Rashard Lewis vs. Chris Bosh. Bosh hasn't been quite right since a late injury. Lewis' 3-point shooting can take Bosh away from the basket and limit his defensive boards.

Magic can win: If Hedo Turkoglu keeps knocking down 3-pointers and Dwight Howard continues to be Superman on the interior.

Raptors can win: If Rasho Nesterovic stays out of foul trouble so he can body up on Howard, and T.J. Ford is fully healthy and putting pressure on Magic defenders in the open floor.

Prediction: Magic in six

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS VS. WASHINGTON WIZARDS

Series: Tied 2-2

Last meeting: Wizards won 101-99 on March 13 in Washington

Key matchup: Everybody on the Wizards vs. LeBron James. Minimize what James does and you render the Cavs incapable of winning the series.

Cavaliers can win: If James averages a triple double and gets the ball every time there is a big possession in a close game.

Wizards can win: If Gilbert Arenas is recovered enough to be Agent Zero and Antawn Jamison makes as many big shots as James does.

Prediction: Wizards in seven

SPURS VS. PHOENIX SUNS

Series: Suns won 3-1

Last meeting: Suns 96, Spurs 79 on April 9 at the AT&T Center

Key matchup: Tim Duncan vs. Amare Stoudemire. Duncan has to score often enough to force some double-teaming. Stoudemire always seems to get in foul trouble in this matchup.

Spurs can win: If Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas can limit Shaquille O'Neal's effectiveness in the post and Tony Parker keeps offensive pressure on Steve Nash.

Suns can win: If Stoudemire can stay out of foul trouble and Nash can handle Bruce Bowen's defensive tactics and keep his team running.

Prediction: Spurs in seven

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOS ANGELES LAKERS VS. DENVER NUGGETS

Series: Lakers won 3-0

Last meeting: Lakers 116, Nuggets 99 on Jan. 21 in Los Angeles

Key matchup: Kobe Bryant vs. Allen Iverson. They won't match up defensively very often, but how closely Iverson can come to matching Bryant's offense will determine the series.

Lakers can win: If Pau Gasol stands up to the bullying he is going to get from Kenyon Martin. They need him to "man up" in this series.

Nuggets can win: If Carmelo Anthony's response to his most recent off-court embarrassment is total dedication to defense and rebounding.

Prediction: Lakers in six

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW ORLEANS HORNETS VS. DALLAS MAVERICKS

Series: Tied 2-2

Last meeting: Mavericks 111, Hornets 98 on April 16 in Dallas.

Key matchup: Dirk Nowitzki vs. Tyson Chandler. Chandler gets the defensive assignment on Dirk, and Dirk doesn't like it. Chandler is long enough to limit Dirk's open looks.

Hornets can win: If Chris Paul makes Jason Kidd look his age. Paul has to keep the pressure on Kidd from start to finish, wearing him down as the series progresses.

Mavericks can win: If Josh Howard becomes a crunch-time scorer. Howard can't open fast and fade late, because Dirk's shots will be tougher to get against Chandler.

Prediction: Hornets in seven

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UTAH JAZZ VS. HOUSTON ROCKETS

Series: Jazz won 2-1

Last meeting: Jazz 105, Rockets 96 on April 14 in Utah

Key matchup: Mehmet Okur vs. Dikembe Mutombo. If Okur takes Mutombo away from the basket, Rockets have precious little interior defense.

Jazz can win: If Deron Williams dominates Games 1 and 2 with Rafer Alston sidelined, and they regain home-court advantage.

Rockets can win: If Tracy McGrady gets amnesia and forgets how awful he has been in playoffs past. Alston has to recover in time to prevent Williams from dominating more than the first two games.

Prediction: Jazz in five

Indeed the Spurs may not make it all the way, but SI thughts are strange. I do not see TP being overrun by CP3 and definitely not Bowen and Manu being dominated by Allen and Pierce.

No way that mediocre Toronto team beats Orlando. I've never seen a 52 win team, one that possesses a dominant big man and sweet shooting wings in Turkoglu and Lewis, get so little respect. It's ridiculous.
