Jeanne Jakle: Housewives add gloss to Globes

San Antonio Express-News

The bevy of "Desperate Housewives" — including the adorably petite Eva Longoria, who lately has been linked romantically with handsome Spur Tony Parker —supplied charming moments Sunday in an uneven Golden Globes telecast.

The beauties are like a ravishing new "rat pack," a "Charlie's Angels" for today, satisfying successors to the lost quartet of "Sex and the City."

Sure, it was disappointing not to see San Antonio's Ricardo Antonio Chavira, who plays the legally hassled Carlos Solis on "Housewives," up there with the gang when the ABC show won best TV comedy Sunday night.

However, Chavira told me he did attend one of the post-Globes parties and was happy about the show's win.

Back to the "Globes": All the women looked great, particularly Longoria in her tea-length black Oscar de la Renta. However, it was Teri Hatcher's acceptance speech for best actress in a television comedy that provided the emotional zing. She was genuinely taken aback by her win and showed it in one of the more moving reactions in a night full of yawners.

Smiling amid tears, Hatcher thanked ABC for giving me "a second chance at a career when I couldn't have been a bigger has-been." She also pointed out the boost the series was for over-40 actresses like herself. The exception, of course, is the under-30 Longoria, "who eats a lot," Hatcher giggled.

Another cool surprise on the NBC broadcast was "Nip/Tuck" nabbing the best television drama award. The F/X show about two plastic surgeons in Miami is one of cable's edgiest, best-acted and overall most addictive treats.

Confirmed couple?

Back to Longoria and her reported romance with Parker: One L.A. associate said the two can indeed be called a couple. I'm told the Spur even lent Longoria his car recently to drive to her sister's wedding in Austin.
Spurs spokesman Tom James wouldn't confirm any of the talk, saying it's against policy to discuss a player's private life.

Joy Reinagel, a local events whiz who has taken Longoria to Spurs games multiple times in the last few months, would only say Parker and Longoria seem "to be having a wonderful time." Spots where they've hung out with friends include restaurants P.F. Chang's in the Quarry and L'Etoile on Broadway.

In an example of life imitating art, Longoria will help host a charity fashion show in San Antonio on Feb. 26. (Remember the episode in which an angry woman attacked Hatcher's character and she had to appear ripped and torn on the catwalk?)

San Antonio's version is being planned by a high school teacher, Christianne Perkins, who is vying for the Fiesta title Queen of the Vine. The ABC's of Fashion will benefit the Brighton Center for Inclusive Communities and will be held at the Club of Sonterra. For info, call (210) 316-4356.

From 'hole' to 'gorgeous'

Tom Green finally got to know the real San Antonio.
The actor/comedian recalled stopping by the city a couple of years ago, and thinking, "San Antonio was a real hole." Green clearly wasn't in the right area of town back then, he said; he didn't even see the River Walk.

He made up for it last week by touring all kinds of neat places downtown — the Alamo, the River Walk, the city's picturesque hotels. His revised opinion: "San Antonio is absolutely gorgeous."

Green, of course, is known for his MTV stint, out-there movies such as "Freddy Got Fingered," his battle with cancer and his brief marriage to Drew Barrymore. He was here as part of an NBC road trip to shoot segments for "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

His goal was to find the most interesting person in Texas, while capturing the charm of two of its cities, San Antonio and Austin. It's part of an ongoing "Tonight Show" segment, "The Most Interesting Person Search." The winner will appear on the Leno show in the next few weeks.

Until this is confirmed or denied, Kori is going to keep locking these threads. I might as well help her out on this one.
