Congrats to Manu!

NEW YORK, April 21, 2008 – Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs is the winner of the NBA Sixth Man Award presented by Kia Motors as the league’s best player in a reserve role for the 2007-08 season, the NBA announced today.

Ginobili received 615 out of a possible 620 points, including 123 of a possible 124 first-place votes, from a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns finished second with 283 points and Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks finished third with 44 points.

In order to be eligible for this award, players had to have come off the bench in more games than they started. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.

As part of its support of the Sixth Man Award, Kia Motors will donate a brand-new 2009 Kia Borrego seven-passenger SUV on behalf of Ginobili to Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives of San Antonio which is committed to caring for children in crisis. Each winner of the four year-end awards presented by Kia Motors will receive a Borrego on behalf of the player’s charity of choice.

A sixth man in 51-of-74 games played this season, Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring with a career-high average of 19.5 points to go along with 4.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.47 steals. He increased his scoring nearly 6.0 points over his career average entering this season (13.7 ppg). He is also the only player in the NBA to average at least 17 points in under 32.0 minutes per game.

Ginobili is the only player in the NBA ranked in the top 31 for points per game (31st), steals (16th), assists (28th), three-point field goals made (156, 16th), three-point field goal percentage (.401, 28th), free throws made (380, 16th) and free throw percentage (.860, 16th).

The 2007-08 NBA Sixth Man Award presented by Kia Motors is part of a series of on-court performance awards called “The NBA Performance Awards Presented by Kia Motors.” The awards, which are part of a multi-year marketing partnership that makes Kia Motors America the official automotive partner of the NBA, also include the Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, and Most Improved Player Award. The series also includes the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month presented by Kia Motors. Since there are 124 votes and the one 1st place vote Manu didn't get went to LB, it is safe to assume that ballot didn't have Manu 2nd or 3rd either. Prolly someone who was either all for LB or dead set against Manu actually being a 6th man.

Nice. I'm glad he got it even if he wasn't thrilled with it. Recognition for a job well done. For being willing to come off the bench when we all know he's a starter. He's a winner, in all catagories.

According to logic and common sense.

Logic and common sense says: A player is qualified to be a sixth-man award winner if he comes off the bench more than he starts. Manu is clearly above sixth-man level, but he qualifies. Are they going to overlook him again just because the others are way below his level?

Kevin McHale
Antawn Jamison
Ben Gordon

All 3 of those guys have won the award in the past and were clearly not just the 6th best player on their own teams. I don't see, in any meaningful way, how this argument that Ginobili's status as a star should somehow deprive him of the opportunity to win the award that has rarely, if ever, truly gone to a guy who was just the 6th best player on his own team.

There was a long thread dedicated to this, but I think, if nothing else, Manu deserves this award for embodying the very prinicples of teamwork and selflessness that 6th men are supposed to be about. Few players with star-level games in the current NBA would willingly accept a role coming off the bench for the betterment of their teams. Manu clearly has done that and should be acknowledged for that so that history will remember that ethic. I buy the argument that he shouldn't win it every year, even though he probably could. I don't buy the argument that he should never win the award, though.

And, more importantly, he changes the game like nobody else who comes off the bench in the majority of his team's games -- that's the criteria for winning the award and he's been deservingly selected as this year's recipient.

smeagol
04-21-2008, 12:33 PM
According to logic and common sense.

If the criteria used to decide who is and who is not a 6th man is well defined (come off the bench in more games that starting), then there is little room for discussion regarding if he dersves or not the award.

I'm quite happy he got it though, because the chances of him getting any other award (except maybe MVP finals if he the Spurs get there and if he plays brilliantly the finals) are very slim.

Written criteria > logic and common sense

Come on now! We all know that Manu coming off the bench is Pop's invention, that's what logic and common sense says! so, for some of you Manu is the man after Finley or Oberto? I guess not...

But hey, it's not like I have a problem with it, I'm happy for him, he deserves some recognition, but I guess he doesn't like the idea of being considered a sixth man... Idk it's just what I think.

McDonald chimes in.

http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/archives/2008/04/jeff_mcdonald_g_9.html

Jeff McDonald: Ginobili named MVP*

* -- among Sixth Men.

Manu Ginobili can add another trophy to his mantel. The Spurs guard has been named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year, in a vote of sportswriters who cover the league.

It wasn't even close.

Ginobili received 615 of 620 possible points in the voting, including 123 of 124 possible first-place votes. (Doing the math here, it appears that whomever did not vote Ginobili No. 1 actually didn't list him on the ballot at all).

Coming off the bench in 51 of 74 games this season, Ginobili averaged a career-high 19.5 points to lead the Spurs. He is the first Sixth Man of the Year winner to pace his team in scoring since Ricky Pierce did it for Milwaukee in 1990.

There was an interesting typo on the official NBA press release announcing the award, which at one point mistakenly mentions Ginobili just won the league MVP award, not the Sixth Man award. Kobe Bryant would probably argue. Spurs fans would not.

Ginobili will receive his new bauble in a press conference after this morning's practice. We're sure it will occupy an esteemed place in his personal trophy case next to his three NBA championship rings and Olympic gold medal.

Exactly. Manu is definitely a 6th Man ... he's the first player off the bench for the Spurs. Whether you agree with him coming off the bench, or whether you think he's more talented than all the starters doesn't matter. 6th Man Award just refers to the best player in the league that comes off the bench in a 6th Man role.

Exactly, I think that feeds all this confusion about who should win the award, if it's merely a role thing, this should be Manu's second 6th Man award... I think last year they gave it to the "real" 6th man, the man who's backup in his position, the man who was 6th on his team talent wise also... Suns writers have demonstrated an "ability" for any and all the above.

Exactly, I think that feeds all this confusion about who should win the award, if it's merely a role thing, this should be Manu's second 6th Man award... I think last year they gave it to the "real" 6th man, the man who's backup in his position, the man who was 6th on his team talent wise also... It's stupid really, Manu should have won it back then too.

Barbosa had better numbers on the surface last year. So I don't think Manu losing had anything to do with an interpretation of who was a true sixth man. I think voters felt Barbosa had the better season.

And that's why I don't give a shit about individual awards, they're all about the fucking stats, I think that Manu being better than Barbosa last year (or this one for that matter) is out of the question, despite the goddamn stats...

I still don't understand how he didn't win last year and why almost no Spurs fan even thought Manu deserved it last year. Given, it's a lame award but going by the letter of the award, this should be Manu's second time winning it.

Well first, they determine how many games the player came of the bench. In those games, they calculate the number of points rebounds assists etc. Last year, Ginobli started most of the games therefore other players had more points, rebounds, assists etc. because they came off the bench in more games.

Spurs’ Ginobili wins sixth man award
By ELIZABETH WHITE, Associated Press Writer
33 minutes ago

SAN ANTONIO (AP)—San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili—good enough to be a starter on about any team—won the NBA’s sixth man award given to the league’s best reserve on Monday.

Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring, averaging a career-high 19.5 points to go with 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Ginobili came off the bench in 51 of the 74 games he played this season.

“I really don’t care about coming from the bench if that helps the team to win a championship,” Ginobili said.

The Spurs have a 1-0 lead over the Phoenix Suns in their best-of-seven first-round playoff series. Suns guard Leandro Barbosa won the award last year and Ginobili came in second.

“He’s one of the better players in the NBA, who just happens to come off the bench,” said Spurs starting guard Michael Finley. “Any other team in the league, he’d probably be starting, but for him to come off the bench and put his ego aside it just shows what kind of team we have, and more importantly what kind of player and All-Star he is.”

Ginobili got 123 of 124 first-place votes for 615 points. Barbosa came in second with 283 points and the Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Terry was third with 44.

“It was no race. Just like, when (is it) going to happen,” said Spurs point guard Tony Parker. “He was our best player all year long.”

The 6-foot-6 guard who gives the team a boost of energy off the bench. He was drafted by the Spurs in 1999 in the second round with the 57th overall pick. The Argentinian has been with the team for three of its four title runs.

“That is what I’m going to remember when I retire, the rings I have,” Ginobili said. “Not the fact I played 28 minutes or 33 or my name being called in the starting lineup. That’s not going to make the difference in 10 to 15 years.”

Ginobili enters the game, usually about midway through the first quarter, to huge roars from the crowd when the Spurs announcer yells “Here comes Manu!”

“I just consider myself a player, a team player,” Ginobili said. “So this year he (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) thought it was more important for me to come from the bench, so I just try to do it the best way I can.”

Popovich gave all the credit to Ginobili, who is the first Spurs player to win the award.

“Manu is a person who’s much more concerned with the group than he is about himself,” Popovich said. “He got over himself a long time ago. … I don’t think there are too many All-Stars that coaches in this league can go to and say, ‘You’ve been great. Now you’re going to come off the bench.’ So I’m very fortunate.”

Ginobili shot better than 40 percent from 3-point range in his sixth regular NBA season and when he drives the lane—routinely picking up bumps and bruises along the way—he’s known for putting the ball in from seemingly impossible angles.

“Before I got here I used to think those shots that he made were luck, and what we called, when I was growing up, fluke shots,” Finley said. “Now that I’m his teammate and I see him on a daily basis, that’s his game.”

Ginobili hit the game winning layup in the Spurs’ Game 1 win over the Suns on Saturday with 1.8 seconds on the clock in double overtime.

The last sixth man award winner to lead his team in scoring was Milwaukee’s Ricky Pierce. He averaged 23 points when he won the award in 1990.

Manu happy returns in NBA Sixth Man voting
Posted: April 21, 2008, 2:54 PM by Bruce Arthur
Basketball, NBA

So Manu Ginobili is the sixth man of the year, according to 123 of a possible 124 voters on the award, with last year's winner, Phoenix guard Leandro Barbosa, getting the other one. Now, to put this in perspective, Ginobili will receive several MVP votes this year, and the scintillating Spurs swingman will deserve them. He might even finish fifth, behind the sainted foursome of Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and LeBron James. So if Ginobili was that good — and make no mistake, he might be the world's second-best balding athlete, behind only Tiger Woods — how in the hell was he not unanimous?

Well, because of two things. One, as Homer Simpson once said, democracy doesn't work. And two, the voting is done by a panel of writers and broadcasters who cover the league, and no offence to my friends in the electronic media, but broadcasters always, always, always are the guys who screw this kind of thing up. When Chris Paul was the consensus rookie of the year three years ago, the lone dissenting vote belonged to Utah Jazz broadcaster Ron Boone, who voted for Utah's Deron Williams. When Brandon Roy was clearly the league's best rookie last season, Toronto's own Chuck Swisky cast the lone vote for Andrea Bargnani. That particular vote, like Bargnani, looks worse today.

It might not have been a broadcaster who cast the rogue vote, so we'll wait for the results. But whoever didn't put Ginobili No. 1 did not list him on their ballot at all. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this person should never be allowed to vote for anything ever again. Or be allowed to drive a car.:lmao

Sorry, but I don't understand why he gets this trophy NOW. :nope

For the things he do, he should have won it each season since 2003-2004, when Pop replaced him in the starting 5 for Hedo Turkoglu.

I think the award is very little compared of what he does... I guess he's not very happy about that.

I can't believe the idiots in this thread bitching about Manu winning this award. :bang

Manu is bitching too (kind of) :lol. He had this to say on Arg TV today:

It's always better to be recognized, but (the award) is not going to have a relevant place when I retire nor I will talk about it as my most important award. I don't know. To me is better to be named the best player in Italy than to be the best sixth man here. This award is kind of weird. Off course is better to win it than not to win it.

Manu almost sounds mad too that he won it comparing it to his other individual awards like that. Thanks for the translation Marhq

I love how Manu dressed up for the award "ceremony"! :king What's with the white capri pants? :p: But I really like the shoes - they even match his shirt! :lol

Congrats Manu!

And he showed second place Barbosa tonight how much he deserved it:

Leandro 0-7, ZERO Points :lmao
Manu 9-17, twentynine Points :king

And here`s what D`Antoni said about the Award:

“I think he (Ginobili) should start so that way LB (Barbosa) could get it,” :nope
