View Full Version : One negative omen...

Remember 2003, round1, game 1? We led against Starbury's Suns until the mid-4th quarter, and were then sunk by 2 banked 3s: first by rookie Amare Stoudemire from the top of the key to force OT, then by Starbury himself to end the game 96-95. There is a strange symmetry between that game and game 1 this year. Hopefully that symmetry will not continue on to the rest of the series.

OTOH, that win the other night showed such grit and determination to win by both teams, rugged and playoff battle-tested as they are, that I'm pretty sure this series will go 7 games to the wire.

As an aside, I was in Bozeman, Montana, watching that game shortly after my first SA pilgrimage. It left a horrible taste in my mouth. However, Big Sky Country is gorgeous, and my mate Roi and I decided to drive on to Missoula where we spent the night getting drunk with U. Montana students to wipe away the misery. By the time we reached Vegas a week later the series was done and the bitter taste swept away. Good times. :D

another time, another series.

Well, I knew as scary at those Suns were, it still took 2 very long shots to win. I knew they wouldn't do that every game.

In that series, Amare had one very nasty stuff of Tim.

Tony started his amazing growing up process, was transformed by the end of the series. Starbury was riding high then, had awed Tony. Look where they are now.

C'mon, I had to point it out since no-one else did. The symmetry is freaky.

However, as m33p0 said, "another time another series", so don't freak out. This one is going the distance, and may well be one of the great series in NBA history by the time it's done.

Barring serious injury, the winner of this series plays the Celts in the Finals IMHO.

Well the difference is that the Spurs were obviously the better team than the Suns in that series. In this series, it's rather unclear who the better team really is.

I remember that game.

I see the symmetry, but I'm not worried about it.

Amare has hit more than 1 three against us in the playoffs... for similitude sort of thread.. we should have lost the game and we didn;t... useless thread

I don't think so. This is a great series, but I don't expect the winner to survive the next round.

Um, yes, we lost the game 96-95 in OT, dumbass. The similitude is perfect - Amare=Finley, Starbury=Duncan. The only difference is that the recent game went to 2OT.

Don't call my thread stupid when you don't even know your Spurs history!

Is Shaq missing game 2 due to aback injury and a tall old white guy starting in his place? And is one of their important back up bigs gonna miss the game due to a stupid elbow thrown at the opposing big's throat?

Just curious :)

Finley's shot was alot more drawn up than Amare's and Starbury's heave was off one foot while Duncan's was plant set shoot

Pretty big differences, but I see where your going.

I don't plan on Manu going 0-6 from downtown in Game 2, either. Or Parker getting a near-concussion and being useless in the first half because he's so dizzy he thinks Barbosa is Eva and needs to hug her/him just as he's shooting a three.

That game was insane. I didnt really expect any thing from that team so i was estactic. It seemed like Marbury really had Parkers number back then.

Dont forget Jake Voshkuhl of all people hitting a game winner in game 3 or 4. :lol

Thats the only time Ive been to a game that has had a game winner.

The more disturbing parallel is with 2006. The Spurs won a close game at home and seemed happy with the "split" so nobody but Duncan showed up for game 2. Pop then decided that what the series had been so sorely lacking was his incredible coaching ability, so he put both the centers at the end of the bench and let the Mavericks shoot 70 percent on Smallball© for five games.

And don't go that far back, just remember 2006 WCSF agaisnt Dallas, The Spurs barely won by 2 points in Game 1 just to get stomped in game 2 in a blow out.

That's whats going to happen tomorrow my friend.

urunobili - sorry, shouldn't have called you a dumbass. I like you too. :married:

I was just objecting to the word "useless", which is pretty strong, but I over-reacted. Let's just fuggedaboutit. :)

Phenomanul - I didn't read the thread where you pointed it out, apologies. Both on the 19th, too. Hmmm...

For those objecting to me bringing it up, it is just a curiosity, not a bad omen. I tried to change the topic heading but can't. If you believe in omens, I apologize. I don't. It's just an odd coincidence, that's all.

Yeh, it really doesn't qualify as an omen, good or bad.

A bad omen would be something like going out and having too much to drink, waking up in a strange bedroom, and seeing a bra on the floor... with three cups.

A bad omen is finding a home pregnancy test in your trash can... and you've had a vasectomy.

A bad omen is getting a fortune cookie that says, "That wasn't chicken."

A bad omen is finding the worm at the bottom of a bottle... of milk.

A bad omen is when someone reminds you that this is the longest Grant Hill has gone without a major injury in 6 seasons.

And a bad omen is when every player on your team knows that Manu is going to his left, and taking the ball to the rack... and they still can't stop him.
