Where can I download teh OS for a Toahiba Satellite? I have a virus and unlike Dell, there is no factory restore setting on these things. Is reinstalling teh OS and all the drivers my only option?

I take it back. The only links I found were pretty dead, so I can't help ya much.

But yeah, if you've got a virus and you can't root it out or clear it with virus-scan, then the best way to get it out would be to format (erase) the harddrive and reinstall the OS. Usually you will be provided discs to be able to do this, but lord knows who actually keeps CDs organized these days.

The only thing to keep in mind is this is gonna be like a retail install of that OS software, so it may NOT have all the drivers and stuff specific to your hardware.

I have no idea where those disc are, you're right.

A co-worker gave this old thing to me cause he just couldn't fix it. When you try to connent to the internet, it shuts down comp. When I tried to run a Norton disk, it would try to uninstall software when it wasn't even installed yet.

I was trying to find OS and drivers online, but I can't. maybe I can download that on a different computer and save those files to disk to run on the Toshiba? is that possible?

There should have been a recovery disk provided when you purchased the laptop, but in cases where the disk is lost or damaged they are available on some torrent sites....

Yeah, I would say try to find a torrent for the specific OS/device you need. Google is your friend.

At that point, you'd probably have to burn that to a disc or external drive and install from that. But I wouldn't expect it to necessarily be simple as pie...and pie was never that fucking simple in the first place.

Have you tried using Bazooka Scanner?? It can be bit cumbersome at first, but after some time it is possible to get it fixed.

By the way, what is the model number of the laptop. If you are really interested I can guide you how to save your files and get you up and running again.

Can you boot into safe mode? That may allow you to install the AV software and scan/clean.

Unfortunately these laptops seem to be problematic. My advice to you is to back up your data. You can do this by using a live linux cd (ubuntu, pclinuxos, knoppix, etc...) and using a portable hard drive. If you have neither, you can download linux for free from many a website and think about purchasing a portable hard drive to back up your data. As far as re-installing winBLOWS, I mean windows xp you can pm me.

Remove the HD

put a USB adapter on it.

Place the USB in another PC with AVAST do a boot up scan, remove the infection, then put HD back in notebook.

^ those things work like a charm.

During post, does the thing give you a choice to get to a boot screen? If it does, look and see if there is a "recovery partition" on the hdd. I know you said it was older, but sometimes these things show up. You can get the machine back to the way it was when it came out of the box (download drivers anyways).

Do this only till you try everyone's suggestion above.

I'll look and see what I have for the Toshiba.

Also, what questions do you have on the 531S? I haven't worked on one, but might be able to help.
