John Smoltz is a true baseball legend, one of the great pitchers of the last few generations.
I have a personal memory of Smoltz when back in the summer of 2003 I was living in Chicago. I was downtown taking in lunch at the Cheesecake Factory at the base of the Hancock Building reading a newspaper when I get a tap on the shoulder from a guy sitting at a table behind me asking if he could use the business section when I was done with it. I said "sure thing" and turned to hand it to him only to see that it was Smoltz. The Braves were in town playing the Cubs and he was taking in lunch there as well. The guy was really polite and humbly answered me when I asked him what it was like to take the mound in the World Series with all of the pressure on (I had to ask).

After Clemens has allegedly been exposed this puts Smoltz up even higher on the list as one of the best pitchers of his generation.
My Smoltz story is he signed a baseball for me in 1998 in Houston after he beat the Astros. Sad thing is John Rocker's signature is on the other side of the baseball...oh well.
Whisky dog, what was Smoltz's response to your question?

first ballot hall-of-famer, no doubt.
third best right-hander of his era.
