Basketball-Boston's Kevin Garnett was named the NBA's defensive player of the year on Tuesday, easily beating out Denver Nuggets' Marcus Camby and Houston Rockets' Shane Battier.
Garnett, who averaged 9.2 rebounds and 18.8 points a game leading the Celtics to the NBA's best record, received 493 points, including 90 first-place votes in balloting by sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the U.S. and Canada.
A 12-year NBA veteran, Garnett became the 32nd player in league history to record 20,000 career points. Camby, the 2007 defensive player of the year, was a distant second with 178 points and Battier third on 175.
NHL-Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz signed a contract extension on Tuesday despite the team making a first-round Stanley Cup playoff exit for the fourth consecutive season.
Details of the extension were not announced. The only head coach the franchise has ever known, Trotz has been behind the bench for all 738 regular-season games (324-308-106) since the Predators came into the league 10 years ago.
