HP's got a kickass one. You can buy the 2550L at Best Buy for $499, and add a wired print server for $70 or so (ones with Ethernet built in will set you back an extra $100).

I've had HP laser jets which suck, IMO. But I'll tell you, the best printer I've ever had is this huge Epson LQ1170 dot matrix. It took up half my desk. I've had it since the late '80s and it never gave me a problem. I just retired it this month because all I was using it for was printing checks and I finally got around to switching to laser checks.

The Xerox Phaser 6100 series is probably the best color printer you can get for your price range. Here is a link to one for about $600.
