Cowboy Golf Earns 51st Conference Title
Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team defended its Big 12 title on Sunday, wrapping up a 20-shot victory at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
The Cowboys began the day with a 16-shot lead over the field and pushed the margin to 20 after carding a 291 final round. OSU finished the 72-hole event with an 11-under-par total of 1,141. Texas finished as the event’s runner-up at 1,161 and Texas Tech came in four shots back at 1,165 and in third place.
“It’s always exciting to win a championship, especially on a great golf course like Whispering Pines” head coach Mike McGraw said. “This place just keeps getting better and better and we are fortunate to be able to play it.”
For the Cowboys, the title was the 51st in the 62-year history of the program and their second consecutive victory in the event. Overall, OSU has won a league-best six Big 12 titles.
Individually, three Cowboys finished in the top 10 led by a 1-2 showing from freshmen Rickie Fowler and Kevin Tway. The win by Fowler also resulted in back-to-back medalists at the event for the Cowboys and was the sixth time an OSU player has won the title.
For Fowler, the top-ranked player in the country, the win was the second of his career and came by four shots over Tway. The Murrieta, Calif., native entered the final round one shot behind his teammate, but surged into the top spot after a final round 68 gave him a 9-under 279 total.
Cowgirl Golf Rolls To Big 12 Title
STILLWATER, Okla. —For the second consecutive day, Oklahoma State’s women’s golf team built on its lead and cruised to a 27-shot victory on Sunday at the Big 12 Championship at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, giving them their first league title under head coach Laura Matthews.
The Cowgirls finished with a 48-over 912 team total after carding a 307 score in cold and windy conditions on the par-72, 6,210-yard layout. Texas A&M finished as the event’s runner-up, coming in at 939, while Texas finished third at 958.
The win gave OSU its league-leading sixth Big 12 title. The Cowgirls also won the event in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005.
“We are really excited and I am very proud of the girls,” Matthews said. “I am proud of the way they played and the way they represented Oklahoma State. They played well this week and took care of business.”
The winning margin was the largest in tournament history, shattering the previous best by 16 strokes. The Cowgirls also became the first team to produce a 1-2-3 finish in the individual race.
Sweeney, who joined the program in January, led wire-to-wire on her way to her first collegiate victory. She also became the sixth Cowgirl to win the event and the first freshman in conference history to take medalist honors.
