He has some function in the story of Spurstalk by providing a convenient focal point for such contrasts as well as providing a ready-made antagonist.

One might not like him, but he does provide some contribution to the story, like any good stock charactor.

To reach for another metaphor: every ecosystem has its bottom-feeders.
