Jim Beal: Family Twang (http://www.mysanantonio.com/entertainment/columnists/jbeal/stories/MYSA012105.WK.beal.2491532d.html)

Family bands are nothing new. But the Idaho-bred Braun family knows how to keep the music and the family trip going as well as anyone.

Friday night at Gruene Hall there'll be a deluxe Braun family reunion as papa Muzzie Braun comes down from Idaho to join two Austin-based bands that include his sons, Reckless Kelly and Micky and the Motorcars . Pay a bit of attention while part of the family tree gets sketched out.

Muzzie has been writing and performing Western music, deep country music and Western swing for more than 30 years. He started making music in high school with his siblings in the Braun Brothers band. For almost a decade, Muzzie fronted Muzzie Braun and the Little Braun Brothers and Muzzie Braun and the Boys, which included his four sons, Cody, Willy, Gary and Micky.

Cody and Willy put together Reckless Kelly and relocated to Austin. Micky formed the Motorcars and moved to Phoenix, ventured back to Idaho, signed up Gary and, in 2001, moved to Austin. Whew. Chances are there are more family members making music, but that's enough for one night.

And the music? RK will lead the way with its rousing, crowd-pleasing "Hick Rock," a mixture of twanging country, roots rock 'n' roll and turbocharged folk music. The band has long had a knack for mixing and matching original songs with well-selected, varied covers. The band's next CD, "Wicked Twisted Road," is still set for release Feb. 8 on Sugar Hill.

Micky and the Motorcars have a similar, but not copycat, country/rock sound. And dad just might inject a heavy dose of tradition.

If that's not enough family Braun for you, Micky and the Motorcars will return to Gruene Hall on Sunday to do the 4 p.m. free matinee following Matt the Electrician's noon show.
