Silver Stars Host Houston Comets in Preseason Tilt Thursday

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Silver Stars tip off the preseason at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 1, at the AT&T Center with in-state rival the Houston Comets.

With veterans Becky Hammon, Sophia Young, Vickie Johnson and Ann Wauters still wrapping up overseas seasons, the Silver Stars will play Thursday’s game without most of their starting lineup. However, with nine new players in training camp vying for roster spots, head coach Dan Hughes will likely use the opportunity to evaluate newcomers.

Veteran players Erin Buescher, Helen Darling, Kendra Wecker and Sandora Irvin have been in camp since April 20, while Wecker spent most of the off-season in San Antonio working out with coaches. The game marks Buescher’s return to the court after tearing the ACL in her left knee last July. Another veteran likely to see some minutes is Ruth Riley, who returned from overseas over the weekend and made her training camp debut Monday.

The Comets will take the court without Sheryl Swoopes, as the all-star signed with Seattle this past off-season. The Stars and Comets split the season series in 2007, 2-2 with each team winning and losing on their respective home floor.

I hope the Silver Stars can stay healthy (no injuries like the one to Buescher last year) and get that little bit of help it might take to reach the WNBA Finals. I enjoyed going to some games last year, including the home playoff game against Sacramento. The West will be much more difficult for them this year, though, with LA's gains (Lesley and Parker) and Seattle's improvement.

If they can stay healthy, the Silver Stars are probably the best team in the west.

Heres to hoping they can keep going.

Any word on Sandora Irvin after she went down and had to be helped off the court last night?

Phoenix might have fallen out of the West's elite with Penny Taylor deciding to stay in Australia and work out to prepare for the Olympics. Right now, I think the Stars have a slight edge over the Sparks.

cant wait till my Becky comes back home from Russia....she has been sorely missed......i am not a huge fan of women's hoops....used to watch UT when they had clarissa davis and the comets when they had cynthia cooper.....oh and the beautiful Sue Bird whenever she came on TV.....but I never really followed the teams or anything. Even when we got the Silver Stars, I wasn't really into them. However, once they got Hammon that all changed. Becky flippin rules and is such a babe.....

GO STARS GO

I hope last night's poor outside shooting performance isn't indicative of how the team's going to miss Shanna Crossley this season.

The WNBA is gross. I bet me and 4 of the guys I play pickup games with could compete against them.

Hammon, Young lead Silver Stars past Liberty
Posted Jul 9 2008 1:45AM

SAN ANTONIO, July 8 (AP) -- Becky Hammon scored 27 points against her former team and Sophia Young added 23 as the San Antonio Silver Stars won their fifth straight game with a 83-79 victory over the New York Liberty on Tuesday night.

It's the third time in as many games that Hammon has topped the Silver Stars in scoring when meeting the Liberty.

Ann Wauters added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Silver Stars, who matched their season-best winning streak.

San Antonio is 10-0 at home and 7-0 against Eastern Conference teams. The Silver Stars, winners of 10 of their last 12, are a game ahead of Los Angeles in the Western Conference.

The Liberty were led by Shameka Christon's 27 points. New York was trying to snap another Western Conference team's winning streak. On Saturday, the Liberty defeated Phoenix to snap the Mercury's four-game winning streak.

Tiffany Jackson came off the New York bench and added 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting in 20 minutes.

San Antonio's reserves went 0-for-8 and were scoreless.

The Liberty led 59-58 with 8:21 to go. It was 62-62 when the Silver Stars scored 10 straight points.

Vickie Johnson, another former Liberty player, scored four of those on a breakaway layup after a steal and another easy layup when she gathered another loose ball after Young won a jump ball.

The Silver Stars led 72-62 with less than four minutes to play.

New York cut it to four with 23 seconds to go after Christon hit consecutive 3-pointers.

The Liberty went 2-3 on a season-long five-game road trip. They were trying to win consecutive games for the first time since June 11.

After falling behind 18-10 midway through the first quarter, New York responded by scoring the next eight straight points. Jackson hit an 18-foot jumper, followed by an offensive rebound and putback on the next trip down the floor.

The Liberty led by as much as five points with 1:25 to go in the first half. But San Antonio tied it at halftime when Essence Carson was called for a foul on Hammon, who was putting up a last-second shot from near halfcourt.

"That's a bad call,'' Liberty coach Pat Coyle yelled at Simpson.

Hammon, the best free-throw shooter in the league with 84-of-88 coming into the game, made all three shots from the line with less than a second showing on the clock.
