Barbara Walters: I had affair with U.S. senator

NEW YORK (AP) -- After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters is disclosing a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."

Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday, Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Associated Press.

A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.

At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Brooke later divorced, and has since remarried. Calls to a listing for Brooke in Miami by The Associated Press were not immediately returned Thursday.

Walters is the guest of Oprah Winfrey to discuss her new memoir, "Audition," which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life. On "Oprah," Walters recounts a phone call from a friend who urged her to stop seeing Brooke.

"He said, 'This is going to come out. This is going to ruin your career,' " then reminded her that Brooke was up for re-election a year later. " 'This is going to ruin him. You've got to break this off.' "

Winfrey asks Walters if she was in love.

"I was certainly -- I don't know -- I was certainly infatuated."

"Infatuated."

"I was certainly involved," Walters says. "He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington."

Also during the program, Walters chokes up while describing the struggles of her older sister Jackie, who was mentally retarded. Walters confesses that, as a child, she sometimes felt embarrassed by Jackie.

"She stuttered terribly. People made fun of her. People made fun of me," Walters says. "I didn't bring friends home. I felt terribly guilty because she was very loving and I didn't always feel that way."

Jackie Walters died in 1985 of ovarian cancer.

"When I think of her, because she was beautiful and loving and all of that, it makes me cry."

Walters was/is a fiesty woman.

If I recall correctly, James Lipton claimed in his memoir that Walters once engaged in a lesbian encounter at a Parisian party.

I await the revelation next week that Roger Clemens also had an affair with Barbara Walters.

You must not have seen Baba Wawa when she was semi-young in the 1970's. She was a good-looking woman.

Look ... she's not the first, nor will she be the last, married journalist to have an affair with an American politician. I'm wondering, though, why she is coming out with this now. What's there to gain, other than book sales? Maybe I just answered my own question.

But a lady would take the secret to her grave.

The ratings for her TV show are dropping? Who knows
and really cares. The woman is older than I am. The
only way she ever really made it was because she was/is
a socialite with good connections. And has a good
plastic surgeon. Hmmmmm, maybe Elvis wife should
have ask wawa for recommendations before she went under
the knife.

That would make her ... lemme see ... 106 at least. :lol

It's before my time, but I've seen footage of her from back then, fawning over Fidel and Arafat. She was a good-looking woman.

Well, I'd agree book sales is the key. That's why the "Shock Frock" (rev. Wright) is going around too. To sell his book.

I wonder if the allegation is true, or if she wants to be known as the white woman who slept with the first black senator since reconstruction, to show her open mindedness?

Anyone consider this can be another liberal lie? Surely, there are others who did know and can corroborate the story, or that they at least had private time together.

Could it be that she wants to show a republican had an affair, and that it's common?

I don't know. But if she were MY mother, or grandmother, I'd prefer she kept that little secret to herself.

Believe me, I don't plan to. I was just posing possibilities. Not stating as fact.

Barbara Walters and Senator Edward Brooke: The Secret Was Already Out

....Unfortunately, the titillating tidbit is old news. Very old news.

According to Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist and former White House photographer David Hume Kennerly, the Walters-Brooke romance was so well known in September 1975, when Walters was 46 and Brooke was a decade older, that Washington Post gossip-ista Maxine Cheshire put it in her popular "VIP" column.

"A year after I became President Ford's White House photographer," Kennerly e-mailed last night, "there were items swirling around in the press suggesting that I was dating President Ford's daughter Susan (I wasn't), that I was out of favor with him (I wasn't), and that my staff was being cut back, and perhaps my whole operation was going to be eliminated (it wasn't). Those pieces coincided with an appearance I was going to make on the Today Show with Barbara Walters a couple of weeks later in the fall of 1975. On the way over to the NBC studios in New York, I told a photographer buddy who was accompanying me that if the overly inquisitive Ms. Walters brought those matters up I was going to mention" the Brooke item.

"When the time came for me to sit face-to-face with her on live television, she quickly unleashed the heavy artillery, asking me about all of the above," Kennerly continued. "I waited until she finished the anticipated question and said, 'Well Barbara, I put those stories in the same category as those about you and Senator Ed Brooke, they are rumor and gossip.' The interview took an immediate turn in my favor."
