Boldin says he wants to stay with Cardinals

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—Anquan Boldin says it’s news to him that he’s unhappy and wants out of Arizona.

To the contrary, the two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver says he wants to remain with the Cardinals and is not upset that he has yet to get a new contract on par with teammate Larry Fitzgerald.

“I’ve always wanted to be in Arizona,” Boldin said Friday, the first day of the Cardinals’ mini-camp. “This is the only place I’ve known professionally. I don’t want to uproot my family and leave. I’m happy here. I have great rapport with everybody around here, coaches included.”

Boldin did sit out Friday’s workouts because of a sore hamstring, but said it had nothing to do with any dissatisfaction over his contract.

“I let my agent handle that,” he said. “For me, I don’t like to get in the media with business discussions because we all see what can happen.”

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt repeated the team’s intention to sign Boldin to a new contract.

“We’ve said to Anquan as well as publicly that we fully intend to redo his contract the first window that we have,” Whisenhunt said. “We’ve made efforts to do that and it just hasn’t worked out.”

Boldin and Fitzgerald form perhaps the best pair of wide receivers in the NFL.

In March, Fitzgerald signed a four-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed.

The team wanted to restructure Fitzerald’s incentive-laden rookie contract because he had reached many of the benchmarks and was to receive $14.6 million in 2008 and just under $17.4 million in 2009.

Those figures left the Cardinals with hardly any room under the salary cap to sign free agents. In addition, the contract locks up Fitzgerald through 2011, when he still will be only 28 years old.

Boldin’s deal, which runs through 2010, averages $4 million a year. He is to receive about $2.5 million this season.

Boldin said he will let his contract situation will have no effect on his performance.

“I mean, I do what I do, that’s play football,” he said. “For me, it’s not a distraction at all.”

They won't pay both Boldin and Fitz, and it looks like they've made their choice.

Why? Teams have two 10-per wideouts quite frequently. They drafted Doucet to replace the free agency loss of slot wideout Bryant Johnson. His contract is low-end, BUT... that partly his own fault. Had he not held out three seasons ago, he'd be a free agent and after his Pro Bowl seasons, would be commanding the type of money his skills deserve. He held out from his next-to-nothing contract to get a league-average type contract.

He needs to stick this contract out. You can't be in the League six years and have two contract holdouts on your record. That's not helping one's image.

You're a Phoenix fan and you have to ask why Bill Bidwell won't pay big money to two players at the same position?

Let me correct the title...

"Boldin agent told him to say he wants to stay with Cardinals"

the cardinals want to keep boldin, they have no problem in paying him money. he's still under contract until 2010, so, probably after this season when they have a little more wiggle room under the cap is when they'll start talking, if they get it done by the end of next season, who's to say.

while i understand that teams can cut a player pretty much whenever they want, i really hate this thing of players saying they want new contracts before they finish their current one, now, a year before, ok start the talk, 2-3 years before.. shutup and play. boldin never said anything that i recall saying that, however, there were tons of reporters that came out and said.. 'boldin will be unhappy.. as well as wilson and dansby'
wilson just signed his a couple of years ago, which made him one of the higher paid safeties in the league if i remember right, but now you got teams that are overpaying for mediocre players - nate clements, etc. so the payrolls are just getting ridiculous.

course, the disadvantage for the cardinals, until you start winning, players aren't willing to stay for lower amounts like with the pats.

He must be ok with losing then. Just wants his money.

Perhaps. Cardinals went 8-8 last season and were twice within a made FG of being 10-6 and in the playoffs. They had a significant loss on defense, but their offense largely returns in tact, and hopefully with some better health of defense, the loss of Pace can be made up. By most experts accounts they had a solid defensive draft, netting two high-ceiling DEs and a pro-bowl talent CB.

They still play in a lesser division, so there's a chance this year gets them to the playoffs.

Boldin would be a big part of that.
